Nina took the cake. Tricky Dick is more of an asshole than a villain.
I think the VP is going to turn out to be part of the terrorist plot.
Edgar bit the dust and Chloe is brokenhearted!
That's about how I see it too.
Having a Nixon clone as a boob president isn't particularly Republican and I really don't see Jack Bauer's hard line tactics as such either. Jack seems pretty apolitcal.
The Right seems a part of every conspiracy that's been portrayed on the show. To me the most Republican thing about the show is the network it's on.
OK...I just listened to disc one.
There's some delightful stuff here. So far I've only had a chance for once through, but here's some impressions and things that stuck out in my mind. I've only read the first few pages in the booklet (it's pretty much excerpted from the book) so this is pure impressions.
The Banjoist Vess Ossman - NICE !
La Patti Negra: I didn't have the track listing while I listened to this. I thought it was "Under The Bamboo Tree".
The triple tounging Trumpeter - I guess Sir Herbert Clarke caught my attention. GEEZ..I didn't think chops existed that far back.
The Grupo Bahainano...YEAH ! Are they Brazilian ? I was looking for something in the notes, but I haven't really read them throught yet.
Yeah....(pre) jazz ! I'm digging it.
I have it and it's great ! I also have the RCA and Columbia early material, and, as might be expected, there are many tunes which are duplicated, but for me that adds to the fun, because you can compare versions and soloists, etc.
Exactly.
...and the Budd Schulberg novel was based on the real life career of Primo Carnera.
The second photo is Primo and boxer Max Baer. Baer proceeded to knock Carnera down ten times...winning the fight.
I'm in total agreement about the great quality of the Decca set - and it IS a must have.
But you should be made aware (if you aren't) that there are TWO distinct periods of Basie. Old Testament and New Testament - the New commencing after a short period in the late 40s when Basie dismantled the big band and led an octet for a year or two, followed by the reforming of the big band. The Old Testament band used a lot of head arrangements, while the New Testament band emphasized arrangements by people like Neal Hefti and Ernire Wilkins, etc.
Generally speaking - Old Testament is on Decca and Columbia, while New Testament is Verve and Roulette.
So...I'm going with the Decca set for the Old Testament and recomending "April In Paris" on Verve for the New Testament.
A bit off topic, but it seems we've got a bunch of R&B freaks here...
The Coasters did "Let's Go Get Stoned" prior to R.C. 's record. I don't know what label...I have no info at all and there is nothing on AMG ...Does any one have this or know anything about this or if it ever reappeared on any kind of reissue ? I distinctly remember hearing this ONCE on the radio on either WNJR AM or WWRL AM before Ray's record was out.
C'mon..you can just hear the Coaster's doing it ! Right ??
I'm positive.
Man...I'm glad to have a bunch of Alvin 45's and and a cdr from a friend (Kevin Kiley) that is also from 45's for the one's I didn't have. I think that's the best sound I'm going to get, although I wuld buy any reissue that comes down the pike. In the past few years I've become a big fan of those old beat to shit 7" 45s.
