  1. Agreed about Sammy. I think a lot of people from my generation and later remember seeing Sammy in Jive mode on The Tonight Show and were turned off. I know I was - for a while, but his talent overcame all that. There is a live Rat Pack disc on some budget label. It's Sammy, Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin doing a gig at some venue in Chicago in 1962. Again..consumate professionals doing what they do. Dean surprised me by how good he sounded on this.

  7. Prime time Motown. I can't pass this stuff up. Jamerson gasses me. When I was kid and I didn't know his name I knew there was this studio MF bassist on these records. Don't get me wrong - there's lots of good things on Motown. Lots of things to rave about - but James Jamerson should have a statue built for him.
  8. I can understand the mindset, and at one time I may even have operated under it, but you just never know whose going knock your socks off on some standard you've written off as overplayed. .....Or on any tune for that matter. It's what the player brings to it.
  9. Charley McCoy Memphis Minnie Minnie Driver
  10. Just lay on a couch in front of a tv until you fade out. Of course I'm going strictly from memory, but I think I'd take about three aspirins and drink a lot of water. too. Thos gator ade and vitamin suggestions sound good, but you have to be precogniitive of your predicament to have them on hand. For some unknown reason these situations always took me by surprise.
  11. Best bet ? Go back to sleep.
  12. So what's the best issue ? The Swaggies ?
  13. Same here. Hopefully Costco will have this at a good price.

  15. Happy Birthday Jim. It's only a number. (You'll say that more and more each year)
  16. I've been reworking my way through this set recently. This set and The Billie Columbias and a few others. I find the best way for me is to burn a copy and keep it in the car and just go through the sets disc by disc, but not all of one set at one time. Mix it up. I dig Mildred Bailey. Her voice may at first seem Betty Boopish but really her pitch, her range and her time are excellent. The accompaniments are excellent and, as pointed out by Lon, the sound on this set is phenomenol.

  19. Three that I know of. Does the one with Jessica Lange count? 1 - Fay Wray 2- Jessica Lange 3- Naomi Watts Really I think I'll see Syriana and Munich before King Kong.
  20. Three that I know of.
  21. I want to see this also. This is the first time in a long time that there have been THREE flicks to see on my list. Syriana Munich ...........and.............. KING KONG !
  22. There's another Johnny Hammond with Seldon Powell on it. Don't know if it ever was reissued on cd (unless this is it - is it live and they kick off with Black Coffee ?). Seldon was a NYC studio cat. I think maybe out of the big bands before that. He was one of those guys that went from studio to studio all day long 5 days a week, maybe 2 to 4 dates a day. Many many many dates - most of them anonymous. A fine player.
