  1. I like those ones, would be keen to hear your thoughts on them if you get a chance.
  2. Feeling more and more inclined to get this set. Currently only have the Parker Dial mastertakes as part of the JSP Studio Chronicle set, have long planned to get the complete material but i want to get the best version once and for all. The complete Savoy/Dial box is an option but the thought of having to send away for a replacement disc as soon as the set arrives does my head in. But then some of the negativity surrounding this set is troubling... I dunno, the samples on the site sound good to me. Sigh, just don't want to spend all that money and wind up feeling punked. Surely Mosaic, and Horwich (!), know what they are doing. If the fruits of their labours weren't sounding right, surely they'd go back to the drawing board until they got it right. This is not something where they had the source material, pressed the 'process' button and then were bound to release whatever came out the other end. In Mosaic i continue to trust on this set? I'm leaning that way but i'm not ready to pull the trigger yet.
  3. Plenty of good new music out there (it's actually frustrating to me that i can't allocate more funds to acquiring reissues... there's a ridiculous amount of Dex that i want), not too sure about the opportunities though.
  4. Ha ha, i did wonder about that, when Google or Bing are shown as users viewing a page. Bots?
  5. I don't think that anyone is particularly enthusiastic specfically about the actual SHM thing, it's more about the same thing that makes people interested in any other reissue: the hope for a better mastering and being able to get albums that you've always wanted that were previously OOP. I've bought a few and i don't even know what SHM is (apart from what i literally just read in the above few posts).
  6. Ha ha... Crumb sure doesn't shy away from self deprecation. That particular image is, yeah, autobiographical, but playing on comic book tropes to create an image that's part Tales From The Crypt, part 'Young Romance' comics. I guess it plays to that cliched 'obsessive record collector nerd' image, too.
  7. I've always loved the depictions of record collecting/obsessing in the comics of Crumb and Pekar.
  8. It's a contentious topic, that's for sure. One of the most. Cheers, but i should probably clarify that i'm not a professional audio engineer. Got my certificate (not sure what the equivalent in the States would be) at the end of 2008 after dropping out halfway through 2007. Started going for my diploma in 2009 but dropped out after the first week. Scrabbled for about a year but just didn't have what it takes (on multiple levels) to make a living from it, which i needed. I like to think that i kept a foot in that world for a few more years by doing occasional stuff for friends and friends of friends etc but yeah i don't think i could even justify calling it a hobby anymore. Anyway, i'd probably file myself under 'has some idea but is not an expert'.
  9. Bump. I'm only really becoming conscious of Rose recently after starting to explore the Bud Powell 1953 stuff. Fascinating. The video in post #14 was amazing... i wonder how often he listened back to stuff. Putting aside the historical value of his collection, it's just, a fascinating way to lead a life as a music fan. "Here's my collection. What? No, i don't have a copy of that particular Mingus album, but i do have these..."
  10. Yeah the bit rate is the all important factor. On lower bit rates, the difference in quality is much more noticeable with acoustic music than it is with electronic/heavily produced music. Yeah as you increase the bit rates the difference is much less noticeable. When i studied audio engineering in 2007/2008 we did some blindfold testing and were tested on our ability to tell the difference between different bit rates, and yeah, i wouldn't argue with anyone that says that higher bit rate MP3/AAC files are indistinguishable to WAV/CD quality for all practical intents and purposes to the human ear in most cases. Having said that, i prefer having lossless files. Reasons: partly for the, however misguided, archival reason. I can always create MP3 versions of any quality from a lossless file but i can't do the reverse. Also, although you can't necessarily hear the difference, i am a believer that we hear more than we hear, FWIW. Related story time: when i first began studying audio engineering, i was not conscious of bit rates or whatever at all, and just used the default 128 kbps AAC version for iTunes thinking nothing of it. I had offered to burn a CD for one of my tutors, and i burned it straight from the iTunes files that i had ripped. I took it to him, he put it on and immediately expressed strong disgust that i had burnt him a CD based on low quality files. He heard it straight away. I was quite taken aback and embarrassed, it left quite an impression on me: i went home and re-ripped everything in to ALAC and have used it semi-religiously ever since. Anyway, the album was Prefuse 73's One Word Extinguisher, a great album! Dig that Mwandishi sample at the beginning: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FGnZLEuaw88
  11. Would like to get The Empty Foxhole to replace the 'CDR on demand' version that i have. Mode For Joe... some amazing music, but the previous version that i had on CD (i believe it was an RVG) sounded distorted to an unfortunately enjoyment reducing level. Is it possible that the SHM version would be an improvement, or is the distortion present in the original recording i wonder? Was scanning through the list hoping to see Song of Singing. I'm starting to wonder if there is some impediment to getting this album reissued. Seems like a no brainer: high profile, presumably high in demand artist, long out of print album; why not kill two birds with one stone and reissue it among the plethora of titles they have chosen to reissue? Slightly frustrating for me but i guess there are a ton of other titles that people view in the same way and a ton of titles on the 'to do' list.
  12. Filling some holes in my Bud Powell collection, ordered: Inner Fires Paris Sessions A Portrait of Thelonious Massey Hall Vol. 2 Stitt Powell Johnson
  13. I just had a look, and yeah it looks like the CD option is no longer there. Interesting, i wonder if they have sold out? A lot of food for thought there.
  14. Evocative description there. Reminds me of those early morning dreams that I can never quite get back to. Sleep steadily disappears, a speck of a memory too distant to make out. I can almost remember what it was. Gone. Yeah i thought that was pretty cool. Just need to be careful to turn it back down before you get blasted by the next song!
  15. During the working week, i get up early and don't feel like eating at all: i'll usually just have a cup of tea and might have a small plain biscuit/cookie just to get something in my stomach. I then usually have a cup of coffee when i get to work and then a banana at around 10:00am. On weekends or days off, i'll usually make myself some white toast and coffee. Sometimes my wife will make me french toast (my favourite) or eggs (either bene, scrambled or soft boiled) with a little bacon; that seems to come and go in phases.
  16. - Harris Eisenstadt = new Golden State album (not sure if confirmed... I'm sure i read about it on his site). - Chris Lightcap = new Bigmouth album, mentioned on his website. - Wayne Shorter = unconfirmed as far as i know but i'm sure that he mentioned in an interview that a new album was coming out on BN in 2014, so... - Henry Threadgill = pure wishful thinking but it's possible. - Mary Halvorson = solo album (listed under Upcoming Releases on her site... coming out on Firehouse 12) - Mary Halvorson = duo disc with Stephen Crump (as above except coming out on Intakt) - John Hollenbeck = Songs I Like A Lot, Volume 2 (remember reading about it somewhere, probably his site). - Ellery Eskelin = solo album (confirmed on Hat). Off the top of my head those are the ones that i can think of that are reasonably solidly confirmed (other than the Threadgill). Ton more wishful thinking ones... Steve Coleman, Joe Morris Quartet with Jim Hobbs et al (one of my favourite groups, would love for them to record again) EDIT: Just remembered that JD Allen looks like he has a new album called Graffiti coming out in 2015, judging by his facebook page. Wonder if it will be a new quartet album with piano or something else? (i dig the trio stuff but i really enjoyed the last two quartet albums).
  17. I feel like i saw a movie where there was a stripper zombie, tassels and all, chasing some guy (opening credits of Zombieland?)
  18. I always thought that Ween's It's Gonna Be a Long Night was a good Motorhead parody. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WGgCy-hbp4Q
  19. The title track to Montara has an epicly long/slow fade-in.
  20. I only have one of the sets (the 23 Standards one) but it was pretty much the soundtrack to my life for about a week leading up to Christmas... just what i needed.
  21. It happens very rarely but I've paid quite a bit for CDs before, off the top of my head up to at least 5x the cost of an average new release. Yeah it's a case by case thing for me, how much do i want it, how much do i have in the bank, is it a seller that i can be bothered dealing with (this can very often be a deal breaker) etc. To date when i've paid a lot it's always been for new and sealed.
  22. Nice to see a release from a local label mentioned here! I've only heard a sample track but it sounded really good.
  23. Best wishes for 2015 all.
