  1. Thanks for the info guys, i'm looking to place an order after the holiday period.
  2. I'm a bit of a boring homebody, never particularly felt/feel the urge to travel, but when i do travel it's always like "wow that was amazing now i see why people like to travel i really need to pursue doing this more often" but eventually i settle back in to routine and forget about it and resist the next reason that i'll need to travel. S#$%, i remember when i was scheduled to go to Japan and then Croatia back in 2006, literally dreading it, traveling was the last thing that i felt like doing, i would have done anything to get out of it. But of course i went, and had my horizons broadened massively, came back and listened to nothing but the BBC world service when listening in the car, helped me to maintain that feeling that there was a wider world out there with things going on. But yeah, over here having a current passport is a given, same as maintaining your drivers license or whatever. Interesting, although i guess not surprising consider the vast potential for internal travel, that it might not be as essential for US citizens. Going to the US and traveling around would be surreal as F@#$.
  3. Stephen King - Wizard And Glass (The Dark Tower Vol. 4) Pure unadulterated easy to read holiday comfort food/nostalgia/escapism and i'm thoroughly enjoying it. Reading these during summer holidays takes me back to reading them during summer holidays as a kid (the first three books, anyway, but still the same universe). The sun blazing outside really adds to the atmosphere. As an added bonus the paper they used in this edition smells like old comic books, so i'm periodically sniffing and tripping out on that too.
  4. Hilariously awkward and relatable. In that last encounter the anticipation was killing me.
  5. The ones i've heard (about 14 sets, though not the Trovesi or any of the other recent ones) sound fine to me, at least not butchered. Not really wanting to get into a massive discussion about it as i feel like we've been there before: just want to present an alternative viewpoint FWIW.
  6. Merry Christmas all!
  7. Turkey has never really taken off here. My mum will usually do a ham, love having thick slices of ham with acid free tomato sandwiches for lunch in the days following. Someone will usually do a lamb on the spit, which takes some effort. Gotta have a Pavlova. Also, cherries, yeah there's always a bowl of cherries.
  8. Anybody checked this out? I read about it here: http://darkforcesswing.blogspot.co.nz/ Can be purchased here: http://systemdialingrecords.com/market/albums/new-vocabulary/
  9. Got some early Christmas money! I definitely need some new shoes and such but the wishlist will not be denied... Anthony Braxton - Trio (New Haven) 2013 Anthony Braxton - Four Compositions (GTM) 2000 Chick Corea - Trilogy
  10. Eastbound & Down - Season One (first few episodes so far) Have wanted to watch this for ages, i love Danny McBride. Not bad, doesn't quite knock it out of the park (ha). I feel like it has the potential to be hilarious once/if it hits it's stride.
  11. That Ellington set is amazing. Essential. I've been on a bit of a Braxton jag lately, have just started working my way back through the Arista set. Disc 1 and disc 2 this morning... yeah!
  12. Was pleasantly surprised to see Allen Lowe appear on Davis's personal best of list: http://www.npr.org/blogs/ablogsupreme/2014/12/19/371577094/an-upset-either-way-steve-lehman-and-wadada-leo-smith-triumph I haven't been commenting on posts in this thread but i've enjoyed reading them. Always interesting to see what new releases people have been digging.
  13. Money sent via paypal. Thanks Jim.
  14. I really like Tomita's version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ajSyyzIC_8
  15. Not sure about Heath, but i could easily see him not having listened to Brecker and co at all let alone enough to recognise them in a blindfold test.

    Anthony Braxton

Can't remember which thread it came up in, but i mentioned a youtube video at Woodstock where Braxton sung/scatted a famous solo for Corea and Konitz... i slightly miss remembered it, but FWIW here's the video. The relevant part can be found around the 22:30 mark. I just love the expression on Corea's face, a mix of reverence and amusement and respect and enjoyment etc... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2WyeEySgwps
  17. Haaaate this song. All it takes is that opening line "So this is Christmas..." and the cringe instantly sets in. All those kind of seventies/eighties Christmas songs (i feel like there is a George Michael song about a ruined christmas... ah, Last Christmas!) that they would play on the type of 'classic hits' stations that were the default background music for places that i worked.
  18. I really need to make more of an effort to do some worthwhile exercise. Desk job, getting older... i don't think anyone would call me 'fat' as such but i just moved up a belt notch and i can see that if i don't start doing something i'm going to wake up one day, whether 1 year from now or 10 years from now, and be a fat guy.
  19. My standout favourites, based purely on enjoyment: Mary Halvorson - Reverse Blue Steve Lehman - Mise En Abime Lee Konitz - First Meeting JD Allen - Bloom Allen Lowe - Mulatto Radio Matthew Shipp - Root of Things Jason Adasiewicz - From The Region Aram Shelton - Ton Trio ll: On And On Also really enjoyed (>>>>>>> = particularly enjoyed): Pay Metheny - Kin >>>>>>> The Bad Plus - Inevitable Western >>>>>>> The Bad Plus - Rite Of Spring >>>>>>> Mary Halvorson - Thumbscrew >>>>>>> Matt Bauder - Nightshades John Hollenbeck - JASS Tony Malaby - Somos Agua Dog - Dog Laubrock / Rainey - And Other Desert Towns Chick Corea - Portraits Nicole Mitchell - The Secret Escapades Of Velvet Anderson Joe Morris - Balance >>>>>>> Bobby Hutcherson - Enjoy The View Jason Moran - All Rise Nels Cline - Macroscope Matthew Shipp - I've Been To Many Places >>>>>>> Chris Speed - Really OK >>>>>>> Chris Speed - Ruins >>>>>>> John Zorn - On Leaves Of Grass Reissues/Newly released stuff that was recorded decades ago: Miles Davis - Bootleg Series/At The Fillmore Duke Ellington - Treasury Shows Volume 18 Jimmy Giuffre - New York Concerts 1965 Still awaiting the arrival of: Antonio Sanchez - Birdman OST Antonio Sanchez - Three Times Three Ken Vandermark - Made To Break: Cherchez La Femme Ken Vandermark - Audio One: An International Report The usual "ask me tomorrow" and "there's so much stuff i haven't had a chance to check out yet" disclaimers apply. I pretty much say this every year, but yeah, an excellent year for jazz, i thought!
  20. Always glad to see some appreciation for this album/set (?). Was listening to disc three last night: wonderful stuff. I guess we'll be doing 'best of 2014' type lists soon... i don't think this will be my favourite of the year, but really, how can you 'compare' a 'normal' release to this? it's in a league of it's own.
  21. People make and sell all kinds of crazy crap.
  22. Nothing much to report at my end, just muddling along. Work has been pretty full on, kind of patting myself on the back for maintaining, in my younger days i would have crumbled and walked away. Looking forward to taking some time off from mid December through to early January. My son will be 21 Months old on Saturday, i had no idea how much joy he would bring... it's been amazing watching the change in my parents too... i don't think that they realised how much they would enjoy being grandparents... i think it's been really healing for my dad in particular. It's full on though; i think the one thing that i really didn't grasp before becoming a parent was the 24/7, 365 nature of it.
  23. Just a random note, i recently ordered a couple of Chris Speed albums, Really OK (trio album with Dave King and Chris Tordini) and Ruins (duet album with Zeno De Rossi), directly from Skirl records. Have only listened to the CDs once and i'm really digging them, but i just wanted to note that i was pretty happy with the quality of the product and the service, wouldn't hesitate to order directly from them again in the future. Anyway, i always feel like that's worth noting FWIW. What's up with the tall, DVD case size digipaks though? Doesn't bother me as such, but, interesting design choice!
  24. I've given the CD few listens now. Overall it falls closer to 'mystic' Zorn albums like At The Gates Of Paradise and The Goddess than Nova Express and Dream Machines, although there are still some Nova style freak-outs in there. The current Amazon reviews actually do a pretty good job of telling the tale, although they're divided into five, four and three star reviews, they are all 'right' in their own way. YMMV will vary. It took until the third listen to start hitting the spot for me and start hearing it for what it was rather than switching off and just hearing it as more of the same.
