  1. Reading this, I was reminded of Art Garfunkel, who has kept a list of every book he's read since 1968: http://www.artgarfunkel.com/library/list1.html Interesting! I haven't followed his music but it must be fascinating for fans to see what he was reading around the time that he recorded such and such album or such and such thing was happening in his life.
  2. Thanks for the link. Very, very, interesting reading. I didn't have any Braxton in my collection outside of Woody Shaw's Iron Men. I rectified that recently with a purchase of his recent trio New Haven. Does anyone know if the Graham Lock book Forces in Motion is any good? One more question, which would be a better start to explore Braxton's music the Mosaic or the Black Saint set? Thanks. Forces in Motion is a great read, i'm sure anyone here will agree. I always thought it would be an interesting read even for non-fans. Overall i like the Mosaic better and it arguably has the more essential material (and again i'm sure most would agree) but the Black Saint set is also excellent IMO.
  3. See the thing was it was supposed to be Anthony Blackman, but some producer got nervous, and they changed the script on me. {Joking.} It's more bizarre when you think it could have been written in a way to only use a first name, n'est pas? Good point. Still, a really strange, petty way to insult someone.
  4. Just a random thought that occured to me: i've always avoided thinking of myself as a 'collector', rather, i just listen to what i feel like listening to. I've never been a completist or a musicologist and i don't like to have something in my collection just because it is a classic or important recording. Having said that, i like having a CD collection and i guess i'm a collector by default. I enjoy adding to my collection. So how to reconcile this with the non-physical streaming world? I guess it could almost become like bird watching, where you keep a notebook or journal to keep a record of what you have streamed. You could note dates and how many times you've listened (some of you may already do this!). So, even though you're no longer adding to your collection, you still have a physical record in your hand of your aural adventures. I actually recall that i was doing this for a while with books that i was borrowing from the library, keeping a record of what i had read. Slightly took the edge off not having those trophies on my shelf. Anyway, just thinking aloud.
  5. Never been sure what to make of the Cosby/Braxton thing. Seems like a really weird way to take a jab at a guy: "Hey i'm Bill Cosby, star of the Cosby Show... what's on the agenda today... let's see, i dislike this Anthony Braxton musician guy... looks like we got a 'very special episode' of the Cosby Show coming up where we find a joint on Theo... i know, let's call Theo's classmate, who gave him the joint, ANTHONY BRAXTON! ROFL oh that'll show him." Really? Regarding the recent allegations against Cosby, yeah that sucks. I really liked him as a kid, he reminded me of my uncle. One of those things where it's not until later on that you find out that he's considered to be uncool, and now, if the allegations are true, that he's a total scumbag.
  6. Bump. After finally getting in to Jason Adasiewicz's leader dates recently i've been getting back in to the contemporary Chicago sound (which i'd previously felt a bit burnt out on). Picked up this album, it's very good! Anyway, not much else to add, but it was nice to find this thread and find that other's here have dug it.
  7. A new album from the 'Nova Express' Zorn drums/bass/piano/vibes quartet came out in August: http://www.amazon.co.jp/Leaves-Grass-John-Zorn/dp/B00KGYPXPM/ref=sr_1_2_twi_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1416389859&sr=8-2&keywords=On+Leaves+of+Grass Sounds like more of the same but i quite like this group.
  8. Feio and Iska are on Spotify for anyone wanting to give them a whirl without investing. I love Shorter, going to order the recent Japanese reissues soon.

  10. I'm sure Miles and i would get on like a house on fire!
  11. I feel like i've seen this footage before, is it part of a doco? On face value it's fairly mundane but honestly i found that brief clip to be intensely fascinating! I've never really been able to think of anyone in particular when the question gets asked "if you could go back in time and have lunch with one historical figure, who would you pick." But man, i would love to be able to sit down with Miles and see what it was like to hang out with him, hopefully ask him a few burning questions. It would be mind blowing, mind blowing to shoot hoops with him. I can't even get my head around it, it's just too intense. It's amazing how powerful a human beings aura can be in our minds.
  12. HutchFan, awesome to see you here! A couple of us had tried to contact you via the contact email address on your Bobby Hutcherson site, but the email address seems to be out of date I found your site to be most useful recently when i went on a bit of a BH bender (among others picked up the recent japanese reissues of Patterns, Spiral, Medina with the original 70's covers = fantastic stuff!). Anyway, happy posting!
  13. And no bad teeth. Like one young lady told me when relating her rejection of a family-proposed suitor (she came from a culture where such things still are fairly common), "I'm not making a baby that's gonna maybe have a jacked-up grill". I like a good snaggle tooth. Bummed that Helen Hunt got her grill redone. Murphy's law applies too, where you see 'genetically ideal' parents turning out some mutant looking kids, and some, uh, less conventionally attractive parents turning out some good looking offspring. I guess overall it's a safer bet to bank on the genes, but i laugh when people try to control their destiny in that regard. Appearances don't always tell the full story of the genes too: you might have had a rough life (poor nutrition, poor medical/dental care etc) but come from good stock; when you have kids and they're subject to a better environment the good genes flourish. Also, cosmetic dentristy can mask the fact that genetically you come from a long line of busted grills. I'm sure i read somewhere that there's a place where cosmetic surgery is prevalent and there's a few surprises, looks wise, when the kids come out. Anyway, i'm rambling on...
  14. Well, i just ordered a couple of Chris Speed CDs after checking them out on Spotify. So like others here, that's the use of Spotify for me, checking stuff out. I've also found it really good for going back and revisiting stuff that i traded long ago = want to hear it again but not badly enough to repurchase the CD. It's getting under my skin though; i'm getting more and more used to the concept of streaming. The music is out there, it exists, nothing is going to change that whether it's in your collection or not. With streaming you can listen to it whenever you want without 'owning' it. Hey, i'm a CD addict as much as the next guy, but streaming itself ain't so bad. Whether artists are getting compensated fairly is another issue... one that it's very tempting to throw your hands up and let the lawyers worry about it. I don't think that the general public will tie themselves in knots worrying about where the money is going any more than they ever have: the service is available and they will use it.
  15. I like the Jeremy Pelt albums that i've heard him on, The Talented Mr Pelt being my favourite. Straight ahead main stream stuff but the group kicks arse in my opinion.
  16. I have the websites of most of the artists and labels that i follow bookmarked and just cycle through them every now and again when i'm bored. If it's an artist that never updates their website (Joe Morris) i'll google them every now and again to see what they're up to. Also this site, blogs... it's amazing how if something gets recommended and i know none of the names involved i will rarely give it a chance. I'm pretty bad that way really. You know, i consider myself to be reasonably up with the play, as long as it fits within this set circle... it's fine but i guess on a long enough timeline that is exactly how you wake up one day and find yourself out of touch with what's going on.
  17. Ellery Eskelin's Trio New York covers fit the bill i believe (could only find a picture that wasn't huge of the second album).
  18. Music i like, music i don't like. Slickness is the least of my worries, although i get what people are saying.
  19. I agree!! Other than the fact that i dig CDs, one of the things that has put me off embracing vinyl in general is the fact that i mostly order stuff from overseas. International courier costs are exorbitant and i'm thinking stuff would get smashed via regular post (plus i would need a bigger mail box).
  20. Neo-Nazi's are a thing, and they have disposable income. Is it more surprising that LPs of Hitlers speeches exist, or that the packaging was attempting to hide the fact?
  21. Great album! One of the few Hats i have.

  23. Jose Davila! A major component of recent Threadgill and Lehman albums.

  25. I didn't really get the original KOB for years, not until i'd been listening to Miles for a long time. It's one of the reasons that i rail against the conventional wisdom that it's a great default entry point for introducing people to jazz. At least it wasn't in my experience. Ha ha, that's the spirit!
