Whoa that Farrell set looks mighty tempting. Have always wanted to get some of those albums but have always held off. A budget set might be just the ticket.

The most popular beer in every country
xybert replied to GA Russell's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
One thing abut Heineken is that they have slacked somewhat in the quality control of what is brewed outside of Holland. I have lived places in the world where the local Heineken tasted absolutely nothing like the mother country brew. I was wondering about that, whether the quality varies around the world. -
Going Clear - Scientology Documentary on HBO
xybert replied to Teasing the Korean's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Hopefully i don't cross any lines here. I'm a pretty big Chick Corea fan, was fairly deeply head over heels in to his music before i discovered that he was a Scientologist. Somehow i'd missed the Hubbard dedications in the liner notes. I still very vividly remember the moment when i was reading his Wikipedia page and came across the section about his involvement in Scientology. It was a real WTF moment. My world paused and there was a make or break moment where it was either going to be a deal breaker or it wasn't. In the end it wasn't, but i feel like my brain re-wired itself to a certain degree in that moment. -
The most popular beer in every country

Probably putting my nuts on the chopping block here but genuine question: When did Heineken become so disliked? I always thought of it as a decent beer. Not a Rolls Royce but definitely not a Yugo, just something reasonably nice and dependable somewhere in the middle. Reasonable quality mainstream beer. Can't be bothered thinking or trying to decide what kind of beer i want? "just gimme a Heineken." Since discovering the internet i've encountered a lot of strongly negative opinions about Heineken. Has it always been regarded as a shit beer? I'm definitely not a beer connoisseur by any means. -
I used to have Rainbow People which was a nice straight ahead album with a couple of stand out tracks but i traded it at some point.

Digression thread: Coherence is overrated
xybert replied to AllenLowe's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Will do! Yes,a shame on two counts really. It would've been good to see NZ carry their run through to the final. It did all seem a bit of an anticlimax from this distance and as a neutral Yeah, it's a bit of a cliche but i think that the win against South Africa was our final. We blew our load as a team and as a country. The fact that we came so close to losing against SA was a major reality check for me and it kind of got me mentally prepared for losing against the Aussies. Plus i feel like it could have gone either way against SA and, as much as we deserved it, we were lucky just to be there in the final. Interesting contrast between the SA players after the match with NZ and the NZ players after the match with Aussie. The SA players fought so hard and came so close, they were in tears at the end. By comparison for the kiwis the final almost seemed like a non-event in the end (as gutted as i'm sure they were). -

Well, just an update to provide closure, we went on to get pretty much thrashed by the Aussies in the final. Australia totally outplayed us on the day. Disappointed that we lost but more disappointed by the less than exciting match (Aussie cruised to victory in the end). At least it wrapped up early so i could get to bed at a reasonable hour. Hats off to the Aussies, they deserved to win. Will do! -

Well done NZ. It was exciting enough listening on the radio from the other end of the planet. Heaven only knows what Eden Gardens must've been like. SA choke again! Now all we need is for the Black Caps to beat Aussie in the final. Come on NZ! edit to add: the less said about England's woeful and shameful 'appearance' the better Cheers man. I've seen NZ choke in that situation so many times and as the game went on i was getting more and more of a sinking feeling. The whole country is buzzing today, it's amazing how for better or worse a sporting event can affect the mood of a nation. My mum's partner used to be a stock broker and he said business was always affected the following week depending on whether the All Blacks won or lost. And yes, condolences about England. The current kiwi team is probably the best one day side we've ever fielded but we are well used to poor performances in previous years. I'm glad everyone's enjoying it so much I am of course hoping for a reversal of England/NZ fortunes come the Rugby World Cup Ha ha, ya never know! England are tough to beat, especially at home. And the ABs in the Rugby world cup have given us many classic examples of choking unfortunately. Almost always go in as favourites, have only won twice, both times at home. When we got knocked out by France in the cup before last, the scenes at work on the following monday were pretty hilarious actually. It was seriously like someone had died. -

I don't have a record player but i heard a track from this album on a review blog and it sounded very nice indeed. Thanks for pointing out that it's on bandcamp, i'll be checking that out. Review/track here: http://www.elsewhere.co.nz/jazz/6741/bernie-mcgann-1966-sarang-bang/ Random anecdote because i so rarely get to do these type of things: i met label owner/producer Gianmarco Liguori when i bought some CDs from him off TradeMe (NZ equivalent of ebay). Really nice guy, i gathered that he was the NZ distributor for ESP, ended up getting a few more discs from him when i went to pick up my original purchase. He also introduced me to NZ pianist Murray McNabb via a freebie but that's another story. Edit: here's the bandcamp link, the whole album can be streamed, can also pay for a download if you wish: http://sarangbangrecords.bandcamp.com/album/1966-2 Great stuff, i reckon.

Can't sleep, just watched New Zealand beat South Africa in the semi finals of cricket world cup. Came down to the second to last ball, needed 5 runs off 2 balls. Elliot hits a 6. Hits it in to the stands. I couldn't believe it. That was unbearably intense. Elliot is seriously the legend of all legends. -
new soundcloud track from the new cd, me, shipp, m.g. Jackson

Loved it! A bit of a departure from the last couple of albums but still has that Allen Lowe flavour. Looking forward to the album! FYI for anyone potentially put off, despite the title the song is not actually 20 minutes long -
Yes, a lot of the eighties/nineties stuff is in that zone where it's old enough to be OOP but not old/classic enough to be reprinted. Anyway... Threadgill's Columbia's!

Amen. The Exorcist blew the book away. I agree with Bladerunner being at least as good as Do Androids Dream..., but I don't see the movie as being an adaptation of the book. More of a "inspired by" thing. Exactly. It was more like a Cliff's Notes version of the book. If even that, really. Yeah, i remembered that the film was different enough from the book for it to be a controversial inclusion but it's starting to come back to me just how different it was now. I did leave out Naked Lunch though.

The Exorcist.

May be some controversial ones here but here goes: I remember thinking at the time that Fight Club was a fairly spot on adaptation of the book, to the point where i used to use it as an example of a good adaptation when the topic came up. The Shining... read it for the first time recently after becoming obsessed with the movie... there were some aspects of the book that i preferred but overall i think the movie is better. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Midnight Cowboy. Bladerunner / Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? Stand By Me / The Body.

My conclusion is One Night In Birdland is not, see post #41. Yeah judging by the track times. Would love to hear an A/B comparison to see how much difference it makes. Slightly disappointing but at the same time that's how i've heard it and fallen in love with it.

Just as an FYI, i ordered a CD from Clean Feed just under two weeks ago but hadn't received a shipping notice (have ordered from them dozens of times and usually receive notice within a few days). I sent them a friendly email to follow up and got a reply apologising that shipping has been delayed by two weeks due to the high volume of orders they've received. Just posting as an FYI in case anyone is waiting for something from CF, but also to note that it's great to hear that they are apparently getting lots of orders!

Xybert, the AH Ensemble albums are well worth a listen if you don't want the trio disc to feel lonely on the journey south Ha ha, i was seriously going to say that i'll probably order at least one other AH disc to avoid lonely disc syndrome but ended up leaving it out. Yeah checking out the stuff under his own name has been on my to do list for ages, quite looking forward to this actually.
-
Big Convergence Quartet fan but i haven't checked out any of the stuff under your own name yet. I'll be keen for a physical disc but i need to wait until payday next month. Edit: Got paid today! Ordered the Trio disc along with Song Singular.

Your Favorite AACM Recordings (no limit now)
xybert replied to paul secor's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I'm far from being an AACM connoisseur but FWIW my three favourites are: Muhal Richard Abrams w/ Malachi Favors - Sightsong Anthony Braxton - New York, Fall 1974 Henry Threadgill - This Brings Us To Vol 1 Sightsong is an all time favourite in general, Fall 1974 is just straight up one of the best jazz albums ever, and This Brings Us To Vol 1... i guess we're not in Kansas anymore but yeah play that for anyone who thinks there's nothing going on these days. A monumental record. Gun to my head If i could only keep one record of his that would probably be it and that's saying something. -
Ornette Coleman - Beauty is a Rare Thing (2015)
xybert replied to LouisvillePrez's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
You'll want those tracks, though a few are actually different takes of compositions you'll already know, while given a different title. Going by memory, for example: • "The Tribes of New York" = "Little Symphony" There are one or two others like this. Somebody will jump in with corrections. "I Heard It Over The Radio" and "Mr. and Mrs. People" are two of the most beautiful tracks in the box, in my opinion. When I first heard them (now twenty years ago, egad), I was surprised that they were passed over in favor of other tracks for album inclusion. Thanks for your thoughts.
