  1. If anyone ends up near mid-Wilshire 'round lunchtime today or tomorrow (or any of the next three weeks, for that matter), or near BevHills tonight (or for the next three weeks), let me know.
  2. I'm working in LA during the day, but staying on westside at night. Like you - no transportation other than the big, red bus.
  3. I'm surprised this hasn't gone. It's a really tough one to find, so if you want to hear it, this is a good time to make the opportunity. The music is, to my mind, a real period-piece. Not my favorite, but not something I don't want to have in my collection.
  4. Is all of this "Andorran"-type (re)-issues? Kind of smells like it.
  5. Mingus Mouse Sings Xmas for Momma mingus is on tour and comes home on christmas eve. just before he goes to bed, the bass playing mouse realizes he forgot to get his mom a gift for xmas. he goes to bed and dreams a thousand dreams about what to get her until he wakes up on xmas morning to realize the best gifts are from the heart. the book and accompanying cd are priceless. best gift for mom ever. Charlie Parker Played Bebop It would seem a riddle worthy of the sphinx: how do you give children a sense of jazz music without playing a note? Chris Raschka answers loudly and clearly with the illustrated, syncopated Charlie Parker Played Be Bop. This sparse, rhythmic, repetitive text (inspired by a recording of Parker's "A Night in Tunisia") embraces and reflects the sound and feel of jazz when read aloud: "Charlie Parker played be bop. / Charlie Parker played saxophone. / The music sounded like be bop. / Never leave your cat alone." Whether in complete phrases or in nonsense refrains that taste like music in your mouth ("Alphabet alphabet, alphabet, alph, / Chickadee, chickadee, chickadee, chick, / Overshoes, overshoes, overshoes, o, / Reeti-footi, reeti-footi, reeti-footi, ree."), Raschka brings melody to the page, and rhythm to eager ears. Charlie Bird Count to the Beat: Baby Loves Jazz Count with Charlie Bird as he plays his sax: One orange ostrich plays organ solo . Two tiny tigers play trumpet duo. Seems like some pretty hip stuff. Beats "Go Dog, Go", from my youth.
  6. Philly Joe Giraffes Jungle Jazz Publisher: Penguin Group (USA) Incorporated Release Date: 04/01/2007 Age Range: 2-6 Synopsis: Philly Joe Giraffe marches through the jungle with his drum, telling the animals about a big concert at the lake. The animals follow him and are treated to the coolest jungle jam ever! The CD that comes with this book will be animal-themed, and will include selections such as ?The Monkey Hop? and ?The Elephant Stomp.? Miles the Crocodile Plays the Colors of Jazz EAN: 9780843120844 Publisher: Penguin Group (USA) Incorporated Release Date: 12/10/2009 Before John Was a Jazz Giant : A Song of John Coltrane Publisher: Holt & Company, Henry Release Date: 04/01/2008 Age Range: 5-9 Synopsis: Young John Coltrane was all ears. And there was a lot to hear growing up in the South in the 1930s: preachers praying, music on the radio, the bustling of the household. These vivid noises shaped Johns own sound as a musician. Carole Boston Weatherford and Sean Qualls have composed an amazingly rich hymn to the childhood of jazz legend John Coltrane.
  7. Innocent saxophone? Apparently, you haven't read The Devil's Horn
  8. Conyers is chair of Department of Black Studies at University of Nebraska at Omaha. I think that makes me feel a bit better.
  9. At Amazon To be honest, the title gives me the heebie jeebies. Must be my Berkeley upbringing. Two things stand out in the description: the name Ken Burns - not sure what to make of that - and it is a collection of writings by mostly unfamiliar (to me) authors.
  10. I can sympathize. It's like when I sold my children into slavery.
  11. Happy Birthday, Allen!
  12. Have a great one!
  13. What Word Did You Learn Today? I could tell you, but my mom would probably wash my mouth out with soap again.
  14. I find the sound - as heard by the player - to be like a tenor, but without the "body". Kind of emaciated. It's not a BAD emaciated sound. Maybe more feminine?
  15. I won't tout this site, another bot, as "better". I'll say it's good, though the range of magazines is narrower (but different). It also covers many newspapers. CheapMagazineSite
  16. I'm a magazine hound, with more than 75 subscriptions. I use Magazinepricesearch, but BEWARE, they're just a bot/an aggregator of information. They search several vendors, some of whom are reliable (bestdealmagazines), some of whom are not, and a few of whom have a little scam to their business (magazines.com has automatic renewals at higher prices).
  17. I'm a fanatic for tenor/piano duos (having played in more than a few - on both sides) so you casn imagine I'm enjoying these. Thanks.
  18. My Conn's got problems that prevent me from getting anything other than an Ayler-esque shriek. But the Buescher is mellow.
  19. I've got a C "low pitch" Buescher myself, and another C Melody Conn. Check the old pad "plates"; see if they've got a date on them. Mine do. I'll have to check that date again - can't recall. Or look below the thumb hook.
  20. I can only echo all those wishes for a successful conclusion of the treatments and full recovery VERY SOON!
  21. Never tried the Café Bustelo Instant Espresso, but I'm going to order some up to be sent ahead to my next hotel.
  22. The only time I drink Starbucks is when my hotel gives it to me for free.
  23. I got the Mobley on a pre-order. Poor thing's been in storage since. It was pre-MP3 days for me, so I don't even have it on my Zune(s). Of the box set specials, I guess I have all the ones that interest me OTHER than the Pass. And I s'pose the Selects and singles aren't immediately in danger (and the $ savings are lower).
  24. Ahhh yes, Nescafe. I can't say I'm as familiar with the Mexican version as some ofthe European, African and Asian versions, but I'd agree - better-than-average. The stuff I've gotten in the US, though, hasn't been up to snuff. Actually, it tasted like snuff.
