Bobby Bradford & John Carter Quintet - No U Turn (2015, Dark Tree
jcam_44 replied to niels's topic in New Releases
Got my copy in Friday. I agree about the low sound of the bass, but I'm not surprised or deterred by it. It's similar sound quality-wise to the Bobby Bradford & The Mo'tet "Live at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art". Never tire of hearing his horn sing. -
Edit: my fault, it was www.ioldies.com I ordered from. Them I do not recommend.

Curious about your thoughts when you get a chance to hear it to see if they match mine Shall do. Not released here for a few weeks. To be honest I ordered it as I'm intrigued by someone releasing a 3CD debut (surely hubris awaits) and the prerelease tracks sound good in a "lets throw lots of 'spiritual' jazz influences in the pot and stir hard with a few contemporary sounds". Whilst I'm not expecting anything groundbreaking the Brainfeeder/Flying Lotus connection might bring a different perspective. That it's a Ninja Tune is also a canny positioning - taking it out of the obvious Jazz circles and it may do well over here as 'Jazz for non-Jazz fans' What's his story? I agree about the ambitious nature made it intriguing for me also. I lucked into an advance of it. I think your expectations are grounded and will serve you well. Your final point really hits it on the head in my opinion. I feel with the push to non-Jazz fans will provide some hype that Jazz fans would not share. I think the praise Flying Lotus gives it is an extension of that thought process. Yes, that push to non-Jazz fans will almost inevitably result in a backlash from the keepers of the Jazz flame. Flying Lotus should listen a bit wider methinks Still, looking forward to hearing a new voice The sample give a good indication of the overall album experience

Louis Armstrong - Satchmo at Symphony Hall 65th Anniversary: The Complete Performances I've put off buying this long enough i suppose...
-
Love International Phonograph reissues but I have 0 interest in another copy of Sound. The Sam Rivers sound like an excellent idea and I'd be all over that.
-
Fred Anderson - Birthday Live 2000 Louis Armstrong - Satchmo, A Musical Autobiography + Stachmo Plays King Oliver (this will be the third version I have of this album) and The Good Book picked up these directly from Avid. Even with shipping to the US it was dirt cheap. $16 dollars i believe.

The shop I went to had a bunch of the Larry Young and Miles 10" box sets. I didn't pick up either though

Jazz Interaction Orchestra - Jazzhatten Suite

80's Verve stereo pressing but very clean. Solid purchase for $6. Wonderful recording.
-
They upsample so you can hear what isn't there!

Trying to decide which volume to pick up first in the range of Vol. 9-13. I have the complete hot 5 and & from Sony and a nice collection of stuff with the All-Stars. Looking for stuff with his Orchestra or other formations. Any suggestions?

Just placed my order as well.

McKay's is in Nashville now too. Awesome store.

Tom Gruzo - "Say When" Bought it because its on the 9 Winds label. Definitely a departure from the standard 9 Winds album. Straight ahead and enjoyable album.

I got a cdr from them before. I'm sure it's difficult being an indie music store with a niche market. Every time I've asked if something was in stock for their site it never is. That's frustrating. Between that and another instance with them I've steered clear. I've also tried to be removed from the newsletter to no avail. They do give so nice info on new releases so I don't mind too much.

interesting note from the DMG newsletter today ***** Notice to anyone who ordered the ORNETTE COLEMAN - New Vocabulary CD or LP from us and hasn't received it. We will not be getting any more copies to sell, very sorry about that. We have tried our best to get the label to send us another box of CDs & LPs but can't convince them to do the right thing. All back-orders are now canceled. - BLG/DMG **********

Vinny Golia - Solo at Gold Lion Art (cassette only)
jcam_44 replied to jcam_44's topic in New Releases
Update for anyone who was interested in this, got my copy today. 30 minutes of solo Vinny is always a good thing. Wish this was a bit longer but that is just being greedy. Vinny lives up to his high standards. Have already transferred it so I can soak it up via iPod at work tomorrow.
