  1. Amazing album! I've probably listened to it a dozen times since I got it. Spun it again last night cooking dinner
  2. just ordered these two Ivo cd's. Takes my Ivo collection to 28 as a leader.
  3. I'll see what the price point for the Parker is. Sounds interesting enough
  4. New Darius Jones coming Aug.21st Darius Jones - Le Bebe De Brigitte (Lost In Translation)
  5. http://www.npr.org/sections/ablogsupreme/2015/06/15/414007418/my-friend-ornette-coleman Didn't see this posted yet. If it was my apologies.
  6. Sonny Criss - This is Criss! (stereo) Bought the SMH-CD version yesterday after passing up on it for a year. Awesome stuff.
  7. EJ Strickland - The Undying Spirit Own just about everything from Marcus and EJ as leaders so this was a given. Made even more satisfying since Jaleel is on it.
  8. I dig it; nobody has to like this music. However, I would say that for some young African-Americans, what Washington et al. are offering enters the category of "history we didn't know we had and which, come to think of it, has actually been denied to us in some important ways." This isn't a nostalgia trip for them. The aspect of discovery here is real. Somewhat true. But if people made an effort to learn history (and it's out there - only denied if you haven't made an effort to seek it out), they wouldn't need this stuff. This is really a chicken or egg argument. If they (audience) learned history, they would need this, but I think it clear that Washington has does his history or he wouldn't have created this. I see this as a gateway jazz, but with its promotion from outside of "the jazz world" by brainfeeder etc, the gate may be too wide. I migrated to Jazz from hip hop and my gateway was Christian Scott's Anthem album in 07 when searching for something more engaging then hip hop had become. I would say that album and "the epic" are similar in their audience, but Christian Scott's background was firmly rooted in jazz, and I naturally began digging further down the rabbit hole. I don't listen to Anthem much anymore but it holds a special place with me. I hope "the epic" can do the same for someone else.
  9. i used spotify yesterday because I forgot my ipod at home. But I would guess my total listening time in a given month is 3 hrs max. Part of my issue with Spotify and browsing Tidal is a lack of albums I want to hear. For instance, VInny Golia only has about half a dozen albums on spotify and none of the nine winds catalog is there. The itunes store though has a greater selection of what I like, but I still don't think I will keep it after the 3 months free trial.
  10. I'll give it a go. If you can stream anything in the iTunes store, I feel like the variety will be better.
  11. Myron Walden - Like A Flower Seeking The Sun Jaleel Shaw and Ambrose Akinmushire gave this high praise on instagram and then I watched an interview Myron did with Bob Reynolds where he mentions this album so I figured I'd order it.
  12. Oliver Nelson - The Blues and the Abstract Truth nice $5 find. It's a reissue but looks like it was never played.
  13. Let's hope the thread title is sarcastic enough But it's made up for with the quality song selection....
  14. Oooo I might try to catch that Ham & Eggs show. Love some Vinny. Just hate commuting into Los Angeles on Friday's. Might try and swing through on Sunday since its a couple blocks from me. Depends on what plans I have that I haven't been informed of.
  15. Found this interesting. It is a test of 128/320/uncompressed. http://www.npr.org/sections/therecord/2015/06/02/411473508/how-well-can-you-hear-audio-quality How do you fair? I think the fade in can screw with you, but for 5 of 6 I picked as 320 and only one uncompressed, which was interestingly enough the Jay-Z track with what I felt was the least dynamic. I generally picked after about 5 seconds. And the hardest for me was Suzanne Vega. I had to have multiple listens for it.
  16. Thank you for posting. Amazing interview
  17. jcam, let me know how you go with that one if you get a chance. Have come close to picking it up a couple of times but it gets mixed reviews. A solo Sonny disc is mighty tempting. I have listened to it twice and find it to be excellent. I think if you play you will find it awe-inspiring. I know critics gave the impression that this was nothing more than a practice session, but i would give a leg to have a practice session flow so easily. I find it interesting because it shows his ability to associate ideas, and in such a different and more melodic manner than most solo woodwind albums. My favorite solo woodwind of all-time is Vinny Golia - Clarinet but for far different reasons than this one. Cheers man. I'm not going to rush out and get it at this stage but i'll keep it in mind next time i do an order. I still really want to explore the Milestone years in more depth. I know there's the Silver City double disc but, you know, i want the full albums for better or worse. Really wish they'd put out a budget-ish box set along the lines of the recent Universal Italy ones. I agree it would be nice to have a box set of this era, though what I've heard is a mixed bag. I got this disc for a song. It cost more than 12x's the disc for shipping.

  19. Yesterday afternoon I spun Roberto Miguel Miranda - The Creator's Musician Maybe I was expecting too much but this did leave me underwhelmed a bit.
  20. I find it odd that Ornette, who records so sparsely, for whatever reason, would have chosen System Dialing to release a new album. Also strange that you have Ornette on a record for your new label and you don't have that plastered all over the album cover.

Will let you know my impressions when it arrives. I didn't realize the album was so poorly regarded. Either way, I'm looking forward to hearing it. I understand that Youtube has the ability to provide a preview, but to me that kills the joy of discovery.
  22. I've had good luck with discogs for the most part. Of probably 2 dozen orders only one item never arrived and I got a refund. Although I am waiting for an album right now that is taking its sweet time.
  23. I'll keep an eye out for you, not ready to part with mine.
  24. It's cut like the suit Kingpin from Spider-Man wears.
