  1. Can I still sign up for the game, HP? Kind regards, page
  2. I wouldn't have guessed track 10 was Dutch, It did sound familair but I'm not sure where I would have heard it. John Engels is my favourite jazz drummer in our country. He'll turn 80 in a few weeks and there is a big celebration tour in his honour. No one quite like him I can tell you. Thanks again, Dan. I've really enjoyed your BFT! Kind regards, page
  3. Eh... you are way too kind concerning me, guys. Really, I do not know so much, I just have some determination and patience to look for and at places that do have a lot of information. I wouldn't be able to participate when I would have to just rely on the discography I have at home. I just have a snippet of what you guys have and can't afford to buy that often. I hope it is still okay that I play this game with my own abilities this way, just doing thorough research? I really enjoy the search and am having fun 'biting' myself in it until I'll find an answer. I learn about so much new music this way and I also enjoy the little stories that go with it. Jazz and blues are so great and full of those. It just makes me happy finding these.
  4. I see 3 questions, for me the answers would be: 5 5 2 So where does it say we need to add up the three? I don't see a line or something.
  5. Ah, that is very kind to say, thank you! I do appreciate you and others noticing! I don't think I'm bilingual myself, since I don't really think in English. I still translate most of the time. My first language is Dutch and English is my, favourite, second language. In our country we start learning at young age. I was 10 myself, but nowadays there are schools that even teach in Kindergarden. I don't think that is necessary, but.. well when that is what people want, why not? Basically we learn our whole school period, mine was till 23 and after that well ,you'll still learn since English is waven into our society. Films, tv-series and words that got into our dictionary. I am qualified to teach children English, since I've studied to be a primary school teacher. That doesn't mean I'm that good though. I still miss out on lots of things, or misinterpret what is said and also still make mistakes. Expressions and humour I can miss out on, because of the difference. I still enjoy learning though. I'm not a teacher at the moment btw. Besides English, I can speak German, although I've forgotten so much since I just don't speak it enough. I have been fairly good at it, but now... Fortunately my brother has family who speaks it or at least they try to and so I practise it a few times a year. I speak a little French. I love it, but I'm not good at handling myself in a French environment. I would get lost, since I do know how to ask directions but will not understand most of the answer. Even after 7 years of studying, I feel like I can't really find my way in it. Anyway, thanks for the kind words, even when I think I do not fit the description you posted fully. Kind regards, page lots of editing I needed to do since I did reply too fast and made many mistakes. That's what I mean, not bilingual.
  6. Happy Birthday!
  7. A belated Happy Birhtday!
  8. Ah, I do know that one. It was a lovely BFT, Dan. Thank yóu! I was still editing btw.
  9. Hi Dan, In the nick of time, my thoughts on your second disc. Again, lots of "Mmh" present. Not much answers though. 01. reminds me a bit of “Moanin’ “, but that’s not the song. Nice! 02. This is “Moanin’ “ (Ha) – composer Bobby Timmons (lyrics by Jon Hendricks, not used in this case, since it is instrumental of course) A bit too fast in my opinion, at least for the theme it self, it doesn’t do it justice this way. Maybe just not my thing. 03. “Well you needn’t” – composer Thelonious Monk. A really funky rendition. Let’s dance!! 04. reminds me of something; something with “all your trouble” in the lyrics, not sure. Nice that the bass starts and ends by itself. I like that touch. With my first combo we did a Tom Waits song that way. I really like the Latin touch. I’m really curious about what this one is and where it reminds me of. You can’t keep still here, or at least, I can't! 05. Beautiful ensemble work! I love this one. 06. This one is lovely too. Beautiful piece! Subtle piano fill. 07. Ah, nice touch to put this one in. I can learn a lot from this musician just by hearing him speak. I love the way he explains thing. Nice man to talk to! 08. The pianist from no. 07. I presume. I have no clue. I hope he's still with us? I'd love to meet him. 09. Theme sounds familiair. Nice. 10. Groovy! It feels like I tune I would sing, but I don’t recall any lyrics for it. If there aren’t any, I’ll look into making some. 11. Yeah! I’ve loved your blues, Dan. It feels ‘so good’! Thanks for his “double pleasure” BFT! Some mighty good musicians I look up to. Sorry for all the "impulsive shouts". The blues has always been close to my heart since it is so full of emotion. Kind regards, page
  10. Hi Dan, that would be the first one. I wasn't around in the 50's yet. I just found these two and since they had vocals that is a bit easier to look for. The other titles I know from familiar artists, unfortunately I couldn't find the renditions and artists of your BFT so far. Yes, I found one on the net, I will look where they did mention that one. I love the Little George Benson. He must have been a little heartbreaker in those days already, lol, he sounds rather cute so young. Ok, I'll remember that, but I'll try to get into some more before the end of the month though. No need to thank me, thank yóu, I'm loving it! edit: I did make a mistake by including "by George Benson" in that title. The album is a compilation album with rare recordings of multiple artists and this song is on it. Sorry for posting that wrong and being misleading that way. Kind regards, page
  11. That was really interesting. Thanks for posting the link! I'd love to read about such things. Not a 'viking' myself but we have tons of English words that slipped into our dictionary. The Dutch word of the year sometimes is an English one. We also have a lot of French words that belong to our language, something to do with our time with Napoleon. I've always find it a pity that the spelling of these words got simplified. The original spelling is part of our history and that is nice to see. Anyway, thanks again, GA!
  12. Hi Dan, here are my thoughts and answers so far: 01. nice theme, no clue who. 02. Feels like spring, frolic and brisky melody. Live recording, maybe Jim Hall? 03. seems like different songs put together, nog really my thing although I do like the beginning. 04. song: "Jumpin’ at the Woodside" – composer Count Basie The big band I was in used this as their ‘home coming’ tune. 05. really wonderful slow blues. I love it! 06. jive, nice song. It’s been a long time since I’ve danced jive, but I still know the moves. 07. nice song, oh yeah! Love this one. Again, I’m happily dancing in my living room. 08. song: "Real Pretty Mama" – Redd Foxx composer : Dootsie Williams, H.C. Jones – Dooto Reocrds, vinyl, 45 RPM Single Us (B-side of "The Crazy House") May, 1957 Dootone Record Corporation . Los Angeles California also appeared on: "Laff of the Party Volume 8". LP 1959 and on: "The Last Shout! - Twilight Of The Blues Shouters 1954-1962" (2014 – LP – LP UK label Fantastic Voyage) 09. Little George Benson - song: "It should have been me #2" - composer Memphis (king) Curtis – Originally released as Groove Records 0024 single in 1954. also appeared on: “Rare 78 RPM Rhythm & Blues Cuts by George Benson” and on: “Groove Story: R&B from the Radio Corporation, Vol. 2” 10. song: "Sister Sadie" – composer: Horace Silver I’m sure I’ve heard this rendition before, but I can’t seem to find where. I still have to get started on the other 11 songs, not sure I’ll make it in time for the end of the month. Sorry for being so late. I love the blues and I am really enjoying your BFT. That’s for sure! Kind regards, page
  13. Happy Birthday!
  14. A belated Happy Birthday to you! And did the band like the arrangement? kind regards, page
  15. Ha! Yes indeed. Well out here they usually play from the RB, but anyway I would love to hand out my sheet to you should we run into each other some time at a session. Only if you want one of course.
  16. Well, in case of arrangements it is expected that musicians can read and read well, so they use sheetmusic like any other musician. In orchestras and big bands it is expected of you that while you receive a new song, you read and play on the spot. I've noticed that at sessions most people won't bring sheet music for the drummer. I always ask first whether they would like a sheet and that is often appreciated. In some cases it is really handy that everyone can see the form. (I bring my own songs or renditions). In some cases there can be a time measure change like in 'The look of love' is? When there is, I specifically will note that to all musicians before starting. I always discuss with the drummer what tempo I want and the rhythm. The rest I leave up to his or her own input.
  17. Aw, lovely! Thanks for sharing, Duane!
  18. That sounds wonderful. Good luck on all those projects!
  19. Happy Birthday, Allen!
  20. Well we do have that day tomorrow to celebrate. Too bad everyone will go look for new furniture... Happy Easter to you all.
