Out of the ones I have heard I would say "hellyeah!" to Erzulie Maketh Scent, Leaf Palm Hand and Looking (Berlin Version) Solo. I have also heard Spots, Circles and Fantasy, which is a duo set with Han Bennink and wasn't as impressed by it. I should give it another listen one of these days.

According to Robin Eubanks the Dave Holland Big Band has a new disc scheduled to come out later on this year. He described it as closer in sound and energy to their live show than What Goes Around. After seeing them live in January I a really looking forward to this one!

you should correct this asap. If you are not sure you want to explore the later, more "out" trane there is still a wealth of fantastic discs on Impulse. Start with these: A Love Supreme Ballads Crescent Complete Village Vanguard First Meditations Ballads then, check out these three, which are freer, but still essential: Stellar Regions Interstellar Space Meditations

probably not, in my opinion. Nailed is fantastic, but is is pretty furious and unrelenting. I would recommend starting with some of his more recent solo work. Since you've avoided any post 1950's Cecil I would recommend starting with Indent or the Willisau Concert and see how those grab you. If you are curious about exploring some of his more "out" group work It Is in the Brewing Luminous can be had very inexpensively now, as Hat has added it as a "mid-price" title. For that reason alon I would suggest grabbing it before Nailed if you are unsure if the music will be too out for you.

I had the same reaction. perhaps even moreso when I listened to Nailed for the first time.

If you miss out on this one before it goes OOP try Too Beautiful to Burn. It is, by far, my favorite Erstwhile right now. In my opinion, it is one of the more accesible Ersts. I think it is an absolutely gorgeous album. (La Voyelle isn't too shabby, either.)

I received BFT #9 today and have given it one spin so far. Very enjoyable! Great job compiling this one, Alexander! I need to give this one a few more listens before guessing on the tracks, but I will say that track 11 features one of my least favorite "vocalists."

I won't be getting to it before the weekend but I'll be placing a new order from Erstwhile on Monday. I'm really looking forward to hearing the new Keith Rowe / Fennesz disc.

I recently purchased the Atlantic New Orleans Jazz Sessions Mosaic and have been loving it! I've been eyeing the Kid Ory set but, having no knowledge of his music, was hoping people here could post any thoughts they have on this set, his music in general, and any similarities to the Atlantic N.O. set. Also, it seems like this set has been around for a while and hasn't sold very well. Is the license due to expire anytime soon?

I thought they might be the same. I'll explore the Leo website tomorrow. I've been too busy at work today to spend much time online. (which is probably how my employer prefers it. )

I greatly enjoyed both discs. I also need to explore the Genalin Trio. I have never heard any of their work. The Golden Years set got a great write up in a back issue of Signal to Noise. another great disc of Russian improv to listen to today: GERU - German Russian Project Peter Kowald - Bass Dietrich Rauschtenberger - Drums Alexander Kostikov - Guitar Andrew Solovyov - Trumpet, Flugelhorn and Flute I really enjoy this disc! I wasn't as instantly amazed by it as I was by Closed Mountains, but this one is definitely a keeper. Kostikov reminds me of Joe Morris on many of these tracks. Kowald, Rauschtenberger and Solovyov all sound great on here, too. The crayon war drawings in the liner notes don't really fit the tone of the music, as the songs themselves are much calmer and more thoughtful than I would have expected based on the imagery. All in all I am really impressed by both discs!

It's especially nice to hear such sweetness in what is too often the sonically violent world of jazz improv. I also really enjoyed Closed Mountains. I need to listen to the second disc later on today. Dennis Gonzalez has great prices on quite a few of his discs. I'm ordering Old Time Revival and Home directly from him.

If you are at all on the fence regarding the Atlantic New Orleans Jazz Sessions do not let this one pass you by! I bought this not really knowing what exactlky I would be hearing. I am on disc two now and this is some of the best music (previously unknown to me) that I have heard in a long time. I am loving every minute of these discs. The TKM set is great, I have really been digging the first three discs so far but the Atlantic NO set wins first prize as my "pleasant surprise" of the year. This will most definitely result in another purchase from Mosaic next month... B)

Man, I'd forgotten how quickly Mosaic ships! I'm spinning ths first T/K/M disc now and loving it! After a few years of not buying any Mosaics I think I am back off the wagon again.

I bought these two when I saw Gerry in concert with Ray Anderson and Mark Helias last month. They are both fantastic. I will second the recommendation for Tom & Gerry on Erstwhile. It is a solid album and a great way for someone coming from a purer jazz background to start exploring electroacoustic work.

Let us know what you think of those two discs. I hope you dig the Unwound! I bought nothing today, but did have a nice package from Mosaic waiting for me when I got home last night. Tristano/Konitz/Marsh and Atlantic New Orleans Jazz blowout to follow...

HELLYEAH!!!!!! This disc is essential, imo.
