  1. Or perhaps a Maybeck or an H. H. Richardson. I'm flexible.
  2. Something by Stanford White or Charles & Henry Greene...
  3. No argument here! The way I've been playing it, it's hard to believe I've only had this Select for a week. I already can't imagine life without it.
  4. It's been in heavy rotation here ever since I got it, too. Thanks for your comments, Tommy, I think you hit the nail right on the head.
  5. Yes! I always connected Sonny's Dream with A Slice Of the Top. Well, ever since I finally found a used Conn. of SOTT a few years ago, that is. This album should have been RVGed.
  6. Indeed. Though Frank Isola has always reminded me of Ed McBain for some reason...
  7. I got that Blue Note Swingtets compilation years ago and it just made me wish that BN would put out ALL of the swingtet material (it probably couldn't be more than 4 discs-worth)...but then, the market for it must be small. But hey, isn't the market for all jazz pretty small? Anyway, the compilation is quite good as far as it goes.
  8. As Chuck Nessa has mentioned the transition from 10" to 12" LPs caused some confusion, especially with the Lighthouse All Stars LPs where Volume One was actually on the Lighthouse label originally, as a 12" LP. Then the first Lighthouse LP on the Contemporary label was a 10" LP, C-2501, and labelled Volume 2. Volume One of Shelly Manne and His Men was C-2503. Volume Two was C-2511. Volume Three was C-2516. All of these were 10" LPs. Volume Three is not with Shelly Manne and His Men, it is with Shorty Rogers and Jimmy Giuffre. The fourth 10" LP with Shelly was C-2518 and simply labelled "Shelly Manne & Russ Freeman" - both later combined on a 12" LP as "The Three and The Two." I hope that helps. Jim Ooh, good----I've got The Three and The Two.
  9. I've got to get that one.
  10. I have and very much like both these albums (I should say here that I'm a Shelly Manne fan), but for me the second one, Son Of Gunn, is the magic one. One of those albums where each track is a distinct pleasure. On one level it's very much in a 'light and fun' vein, but there's real musicianship involved and I've found it a very rewarding album. The group may be having a good time, but they create real atmosphere.
  11. It wasn't said, but I believe the program was essentially "ripped-off" from the book. Very interesting stuff, but I thought, as a documentary, it was pretty slapdash and a bit cheesy-looking. But, yes, humbling it most certainly is. And I'm damned depressed having seen, in the last week, both that and several other shows about how the Earth is inevitably doomed by gamma ray bursts, robotic intelligence, mega-volcanos, asteroid impacts, and global warming. Watch out for that robotic intelligence.
  12. Nice.
  13. The upcoming release of the Horace Silver At Newport 1958 on Feb. 5 truly makes it a super-Tuesday. (Someone had to say it.)
  14. Y'know, it occurs to me that the number of 32Jazz CD's that I own should prove to anyone how much more I care about music than attractive packaging.
  15. Indeed...my kids are already there. But I like to have an object I can hold.
  16. Alread read the book: The World Without Us, by Alan Weisman. Very interesting.
  17. I just rec'd this one last week and this is probably my favorite edition of the Herman Herds. Nistico, Hanna, Nat Pierce and some great arranging/writing. A gem! Marla Totally agree. I already had about half of this material; I'm happy to have everything in one very nice package. Mosaic comes through again! I only had the "Woody Herman-1963" reissue, so this was a natural for me. My Select just arrived today and I'm diggin' it!
  18. His body was found around 3:31 PM, but you heard about it this morning. Could I have the name of your crystal ball gazer? Could have sworn it was the morning...
  19. Heard about this on NPR this morning...what a shock!! And only 28??? Such a waste!
  20. Rainy and cold here.
  21. Tom, I agree with you 100 %----this is a great album, one of my favorite Cannonball CD's. I got it a few years ago thanks to recommendations here or (on the BNBB) and have never regretted it.
  22. Terrible, terrible news. RIP
  23. Yep, looks like Norma Jean Baker to me.
  24. I read that Atlantic article when it came out. What a sad shambles his life became.
