  1. Man, everyone seems to like the Roughriders here! I just picked 'em because I've always liked the placename "Saskatchewan."
  2. Articles like this give me the feeling that I was born 30 years too late. Which is a ridiculous feeling to have.
  3. "....created an issue where none existed." I guess Arkansas and Dr. Caldwell thought segegation was just fine... That's for sure; they also thought Armstrong was getting "uppity."
  4. Don't sqeeze the memories!
  5. Happiness is just a gal named Jo.
  6. I hesitate to admit this, but I taped most of a library copy of NBN some years ago, so I don't know if I'll ever buy the damn thing. It sounded fine to me; among the most haunting motifs of Herrmann's career.

    The Residents

"Santa Dog" was their best single!
  8. Care to elaborate further? I'd only heard one or two things of hers before attending the concert and I was underwhelmed because I guess I expected something more given all of the hype she gets. Impressive musicianship and inventive arranging, but her melodies, if you can call them that, don't stick at all, so it felt like a lot of decoration and little substance. A lot of it sounded like film music to me. And I am not a fan of that pastoral, mid-Western, hymnal, Methenyish vibe that most of her music has. It doesn't swing but more flows and glides. It's very airy and sometimes watery sounding. Any traces of fire or earth came from the soloists. I did like some of the soloists, especially Donny McCaslin, Rich Perry, Steve Wilson, and Ryan Keberle. Drummer Ted Poor was impressive. I've enjoyed Frank Kimbrough a lot more in other settings. I did like the tune "Choro Dancado" quite a bit. The syncopated Cuban rhythm seemed to focus the piece, and it had a darker harmonic palette most of the others. But overall, just not my cup of tea. Methenyish? Sounds positively Eno-ish.
  9. The Saskatchewan Roughriders, 28 points. (Hope I spelled that right.)
  10. I think my choice would be the original film soundtrack of North By Northwest.

    The Residents

I used to like the Residents a long time ago (undergrad college days.) Duck Stab/Buster & Glen was my favorite album, and Eskimo was a good one. I used to have a bunch of their early albums, but I lost interest long ago and haven't listened to them in ages.
  12. Turkey at the in-laws house, as usual. Good times...
  13. There was an excerpt printed in the New Yorker a couple months ago about people who developed musical abilities after being hit by lightning. The book looks really interesting to me; I plan to check it out sooner or later.
  14. Many congratulations and good wishes!!
  15. I gather you didn't much care for "Blood Simple", "Miller's Crossing", "Fargo", "The Man Who Wasn't There" either. They all have their fair share of violence but are in varying degrees, wonderful Coen Brothers films. Haven't seen Blood Simple since it came out. I didn't think that The Man Who Wasn't There was all that violent, plus it was in B&W and somewhat "cartoon-y". Wait just a minute...a Coen brothers film that was "cartoon-y"???? I'm shocked, SHOCKED...
  16. Hey, now that I think of it, any love for Stanley's brother Tommy Turrentine? I love his composition "Enitnerrut" on Jackie McLean's A Fickle Sonance.
  17. Turrentine is so solidly reliable that I think there's sometimes a slight tendency to take him for granted. (Not by everyone, I hasten to add!) I love his work with Jimmy Smith, on the Comin' On! and Flight To Jordan albums, and the Mosaic.
  18. I'm a big fan of the Webster Verve catalog too. This thread makes me want to check my collection for anything I'm missing, and get it right away.
  19. Total agreement here! I've been a big Borges fan ever since first reading the Labyrinths collection at age of 14. Now that I think of it, he's probably one of the few writers I liked then that I still like now.
  20. You have to see all the episodes in proper running order to get the full impact because there are continuing story arcs.
  21. One of my all-time favorite shows. When the hell are they going to come out with a truly complete DVD version, like they do for just about every other show in the universe?
  22. The next three Culture novels, now.
  23. This one has got to be worth it for the cover alone!
  24. Then there's Maurice Jaubert. I liked the music he did for Port of Shadows (or Quai des Brumes)---also scored Zero de Conduite, L'Atalante, and Le Jour Se Leve.
