  1. Indeed, the group Television always struck me as very much minimalism as applied to rock 'n' roll. Also working in New York, also at the right time... Then of course, there's the Ramones.
  2. Thanks. That's kinda funny. And so appropos.
  3. Minnesota, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania. Ones I'd like to revisit some time: Michigan, Montana, Oregon, Washington, Illinois, New Mexico, among others. Sal---I hear ya! Oregon has definitely got it goin' on. One of my favorite states.
  4. Most illogical.
  5. I think I'll be getting this. Me too.
  6. What does "LD" stand for? (I keep thinking Listening Device, but that can't be it.)
  7. Shoot, for a minute there I thought you all were talking about Nippon Soul. Now that's a good album. Also hardly groundbreaking, but calling it dull and uninspired seemed a bit off. I don't have the one under discussion, and I long ago gave up the notion of being a Cannonball completist. So...nevermind.
  8. I'd say Brilliant Corners and Monk's Music are must-buys... Also agree with the recs for Thelonious In Action, Misterioso, and the Prestige material. First, some of the Prestige stuff ranks up there with his best, and since there's only 2 or 3 albums worth of it, you might as well get the whole kit and kaboodle. (Or whole shebang, if you prefer.)
  9. The last one on the right is pretty damn cool looking. I'd repurchase it just for that cover. (The one I own is second from the left.)
  10. Indeed, well worth it for the cover alone! As far as just "sound" or timbre goes, I'll personally take Roy Eldridge to Dizzy every time. (But, you know, they're both great and all.)
  11. I've seen these for as low as $50.00. Personally, I think you can completely skip season three unless you're a completist.
  12. At least two feet, I hear. Nothing's getting in or out of Buffalo right now.
  13. I'll sell my in-print CD's for $ 50!! That's one-quarter price! Go for it America!
  14. Hope they didn't give her a hard time about it (when she was alive, I mean.)
  15. Beat me to it. Of course. Fine album! (The Verve Elite is also highly recommended.)
  16. I used to have that "giant white BN logo" poster up in the living room of the first apartment I moved into from home, Gardner Terrace, Allston, MA, lo these many years ago. Think I got it from one of those 'best of Blue Note' double-LP anthologies. Makes for a cool background.
  17. That figures.
  18. I'm one of those who thought Casino was a terrible botch of a movie. And I've never been that thrilled with Raging Bull, either. (I always suspected it got the "classic" lable largely due to De Niro's weight gain for the role, which was unusual at the time and impressed people out of all, uhm, proportion.) On the plus side, I still think King Of Comedy is a damn good, perhaps great, film, and it's still my favorite Scorcese over all. (Hey, another "King"!) In short, Scorcese is too inconsistent a director to expect his latest to automatically be a keeper. One can hope though. I'll probably see The Departed one of these days, if only for the Boston location shooting.
  19. I don't know...he was damn good in Chinatown, and I've never counted that as a crappy movie. Although I agree that he rapidly descended into self-parody after Cuckoo's Nest.
  20. King Records!
  21. You might want to check out a flick called All About Eve----it's a keeper, and it has one of the milestone performances of Davis's career.
  22. What does volume 1 look like?
  23. To be precise, Stereo Jack's is in Porter Square, just up the Red Line from Harvard Square. Don't miss it!!
  24. Just received the Gerry Mulligan CJB in the mail yesterday and I'm quite happy with it. I'd been thinking about getting it for a long time, but the "Running Low" notice finally motivated me. So..... should I take the plunge on the Elvin Jones set? Is it worth it? Friends? Romans? Fellow jazz listeners? What say you?
  25. "Bad" meaning good, right?
