  1. Tony Bennett?
  2. Yes! I saw it and I agree 100%.
  3. Finally saw this today. Overall a good effort, I'd say, with a distinct samorai feel about it, which makes sense regarding the source material. Kalo's concerns about Nicholson are well taken, but while there's a lot of JACK in this performance, it actually works because the role seems to call for it. I now see what they mean about cell phones becoming a major character in the plot toward the end. I liked the location shots, especially the tracking shot of them driving over the new Tobin bridge, though the over-obvious symbolism of the final shot was a bit of a groaner.
  4. It surely is a great album; one of my favorite double-albums (in the sense of 2-LP) of all time. Have to say I like What Makes A Man Start Fires just as much though.
  5. Well worth it. I think you'll really enjoy this. Also, I think Doug Watkins' bass is much more audible than bass's usually were at the time. Sounds great!
  6. "Lumpy Gravy" perhaps.
  7. 'S Make It---Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers
  8. Aren't "Voting Issues" political by definition?
  9. Indeed. He played a lot of villiain roles for the very good and sufficiant reason that he was a big man with a scary face. Here's to you, Jack.
  10. I wish someone would put ALL his films in a DVD box set. There's something fascinating about them.
  11. This was quite a shock. I had no idea he had leukemia. My heart goes out to his family, friends and colleagues. I long thought of him as the most likeable and dependable of the 60 Minutes bunch.
  12. I used to love the Virgin megastore on Newbury Street, Boston, but I thought they went over to the dark side when they got rid of all their vinyl.
  13. I looked for the Artie Shaw box at three different Towers. Of course I couldn't find the damn thing.
  14. Hasn't this guy heard about there being a lot of guns in New York?
  15. "Norman who?"
  16. Not me. Solid happens to be one of my favorite Grant Green albums.

I dig it too. Got it on CD a few years back, when I had almost nothing by Turrentine.
  18. I like it a lot! But then, I tend to like Coltrane before he became "Coltrane."
  19. True, true... But then, so are the Oscars, and they keep on having 'em, strangely enough.
  20. The Ronettes, definitely.

    Donald Byrd - Fuego

    Agreed!
  22. I like Francis Davis's writing, and have read most of his books. But I've never gotten around to this one.
  23. "Natalie Cole leaves jazz behind..."?? No great loss.

Right, thanks. That's the album with the orange cover, I should have known. I'm quite fond of that session. My Toshiba vinyl has more of a red cover, though not "deep" red. I can't see it moving units quickly, but maybe I underestimate the jazz public... It's funny---I kept seeing that album in the jazz section of some stores again, and again, and again, and I always kind of said to myself, "Oh, I'll pick that up one of these days." Well I never got around to it, so now I'm glad it's being RVGed.
