  1. Check out the films Election and Pleasantville. Witherspoon is top notch in both. The more I think about Walk the Line, the more I think that Witherspoon practically stole the movie from Phoenix.
  2. I'm in agreement with Free For All. Another flu pandemic like the 1918-19 one would be terrible, but I don't see much point to worrying about it. It would be like worrying about a major meteor strike.
  3. The Challenger explosion? Twenty years ago? Oh, MAN, do I feel unbelievably ....ing old.
  4. I saw it a week or two ago. Surprisingly good. Of course, I was expecting it to be pretty damn bad...low expectations always help. And I am a longtime Cash fan, particularly his Sun stuff, so keep that in mind. Also, the movie has a lot of the typical bio-pic tropes. But on the other hand, it has Reese Witherspoon, who gave a solid performance as June Carter (far more believable than J. Phoenix's as Cash for my money.) But hey, if you can get in for free, it's worth two hours of your time.
  5. As well as her appearences in Winchester '73, He Ran All the Way, and A Palace In the Sun.
  6. Exactly. I thought I was the only one in the country who liked The Music of Chance. Chris Penn's turn in it was right on target, not calling attention to himself at all.
  7. Bill Demarest was kind of creepy on this show. I never truly appreciated him until I saw his work in all those great Preston Sturges films from the early '40s. That's the real Demarest as far as I'm concerned. I couldn't agree more. Thanks to Sturges, I began to think of Demarest as (within an admittedly narrow range) one of the great character actors of classic Hollywood.
  8. It's absurd to rank them, but if you're going to, at least put Nat King Cole in the top ten...
  9. Thanks for passing this along.
  10. The lack of published method makes it even worse. It reminds me of the "non scientific" polls that CNN runs. It is a classic paradox. The presentation of the poll is intended to induce the belief that the poll is meaningful; but the poll is explicitly disclaimed and the lack of controls and adherence to scientific methods entails that the poll is meaningless. If you ask me, the non-inclusion of Sonny Clark and Herbie Nichols guarentees that the poll is meaningless.
  11. Andre Previn???????????? AT NUMBER SEVEN, YET?????? Whaaaaaa????
  12. It's a pretty liberal group, but somehow that topic hasn't come up yet. Odd.... Frankly, I'd be a bit disturbed if it had come up. Oddly enough, the only other literary ursine/human sex scene I am aware of was penned by none other than (so-called) conservative Scooter Libbey. In his case, however, it was non-consensual. Is that the conservative part? Didn't Stanley Elkin write a story that included human/usine coitus? Or is my memory completely messing up? (Wouldn't be the first time....)
  13. Thanks ghost. Interesting, and sad. The Redevelopment Agency has a lot to answer for.
  14. Oh, yeah; my childhood in a half hour series!! I loved it! I'm just not sure if I want to see them again, or just leave my memory untarnished... Same here. I was obsessed with this show as only a 5-year-old can be. No way it could live up to the memory.
  15. Good luck. Every time a really good show comes on TV these days, it gets cancelled before it can build an audience.
  16. I loved the theme to Night Stalker. Just hearing it in my head used to give me goosebumps.
  17. There was update about Trudeau on the radio a couple days ago. The guy is clearly a sociopath. Unfortunately, his latest book has sold something like 4 million copies (talk about depressing), apparently tapping into a widespread distrust of the medical profession.
  18. No, but I have seen Walk the Line.
  19. Same here. Only 64????? That's not right. Very sad.
  20. Vance DeGeneres was great. I hated to see him go.
  21. I can't remember if I posted my age on this thread or not. Which is not a good sign, I suppose.
  22. Yes, I saw it. Not only funny, but very "grippy" as well.
  23. What I meant was, they sound "good enough" to my ears. I'm used to the records, so I'm satisfied with them. If I ever heard the new CD/DVD remaster, I'd probably hunger for them and hate my old albums...so, I'll do my best to avoid hearing the new editions. Shouldn't be hard. Besides, I spend enough money (some would say more than enough) buying multiple editions of various jazz albums. Got to draw the line somewhere, unless I suddenly become a billionaire. But for those who want the upgrade, more power to 'em!
  24. I don't think the Joyride session is on the Mosaic. Any comments on the Mobley? The Turrentine is not on the Mosaic, which is smaller groups. That being said, Joyride is basically Blue Note's approximation of what Jimmy Smith was doing with the Oliver Nelsn big band arrangements on Verve, not essential at all to my ears. That's good enough for me. Workout, on the other hand, I've owned and enjoyed for a decade or more. Might just get the RVG anyway, just for the heck of it.
