  1. Gene's son, Kim Deitch, is also a very good cartoonist.
  2. It's good! Considering your avatar, you should get it ASAP.
  3. I've been on yet another Horace Silver binge over the last few days, spiced with some Sonny Clark.
  4. I know what you mean. Back when I was in junior high, they seemed to show Play It Again, Sam on TV all the time. I can't count how many times I've seen it. Also, it's one of the few that was written but NOT directed by Woody; I still think of it as a Woody Allen film though. I agree with all the praise for the books. They're great.
  5. I'm so...relieved.
  6. It was either Kind of Blue, Nice Guys by the Art Ensemble of Chicago, or one of the Armstrong Hot Five LP's on Columbia (hi Chuck!) back in 1979. I honestly can't remember which was the first, though Kind of Blue definately got the most play over the next two or three years. Jazz remained a side interest until 1985, however.
  7. Y'know, if they would play Coltrane IN K-mart, I might actually go there once in a while.
  8. Now if only Mobley could conquer Wal-Mart.
  9. So long, Ken, we'll miss you!!!!! Seriously, did you see the lucky woman who won? She was so surprised! It was rather funny and charming. Good for her!
  10. In yesterday's Wall Street Journal (Tues., Nov. 30th) there's a Nat Hentoff article about the Joe Elefante Big Band. He says they are supposed to appear on Nightline this Friday, Dec. 3rd. If they're half as good as Hentoff says they are, it should be worth watching. Here's a piece of the article: "The crisp, sharging brass section of the Elefante band would have delighted Duke Ellington, and the surgingly cohesive reed section recalled the sound of the Benny Carter and Thad Jones big bands. One of the swing-era veterans in this band, Rick Stepton, who had worked with Woody Herman and Buddy Rich, told Dave Marash, of ABC's "Nightline," where the band is expected to appear on Friday, Dec. 3: 'I'm lucky to be my age and welcomed in this band. It's a privilege, not the other way around. It's rejuvenating to be surrounded by youth.'" He's got me curious for sure, and I'll be tuning in Friday, if possible (meaning if my kids will let me.)
  11. It IS a bit self-descriptive, I must admit.
  12. Not so crazy. You want to have these babies accessable and ready to play.
  13. You're in for a real treat, Bruce, when you get around to checking out the others... Are there any others as good as Idle Moments? That one is probably the best, but there are some darned good music in the Grant Green catalog. --Complete quartets with Sonny Clark --Born to Be Blue --Solid --Matador --I wanna hold your hand --Street of Dreams (my personal favorite) --Talkin about --Latin Bit And that's just a few going by memory. I've missed a lot of others. Well, I've got The Complete Quartets With Sonny Clark (both CD and vinyl), Solid, and Green Street, (in addition to Idle Moments) so I think I've got a good start. Maybe I'll check out Street of Dreams next.
  14. Yes, yes, a million times YES!!! Actually, DrJ, all your suggestions were were excellent, but that's been a hobbyhorse of mine for years now. Also, I would suggest Davis Cup and J. R. Montrose.
  15. Very cool; Satome rules. I want those albums.
  16. Aren't they just the greatest? I love both those sets!!
  17. Yep, we are. Sad to say.
  18. Welcome!
  19. Grant Green -- Am I Blue Ok, Ok, just kidding...
  20. Sad news, indeed. My sympathies go out to Sonny Rollins.
  21. Got the book today! I just couldn't wait for Christmas.
  22. You're in for a real treat, Bruce, when you get around to checking out the others... Are there any others as good as Idle Moments?
  23. I caught the end of it! Then there was a documentary which had Woody talking about his movies...stayed up way too late watching that, and now I'm paying the price.
