    Just Wondering

    Don't forget Charlie Rouse!
  2. I don't know, though...the infamous Gary Giddins recommends it. Does this mean the book is complete trash??????
  3. M, The Wages of Fear, and The Vanishing are classics. Don't hesitate.

    Overlooked Altos

I like Jenkins, and LOVE that album (having Cliff Jordan on it must help, not to mention Timmons.)
  5. If there really were a Santa Claus, I'd have asked for the Tal Farlow and Golson/Farmer sets.
  6. This set is wonderful! Also, you should get all five volumes of Shelly Manne At the Blackhawk and BUILD a box for 'em!
  7. Between 1986 and 1993 I was a regular visitor to Stereo Jack's! Bought a LOT of great stuff there. Welcome to the board, Jack. I miss Cambridge. I miss BOSTON. (I miss New England...)
  8. Not to mention Sonny Rollins.
  9. Ever checked out Lester Young? Stan Getz is good. You might also try Hank Mobley, Tina Brooks, or Wayne Shorter.
  10. None of what his son says comes as a surprise. Shaw was known to have driven away every friend he ever had. Artistic brilliance and personal cussedness often reside in the same human being... So what?
  11. Words to live by.
  12. Scientific Mindset: I have a theory about this shit...

    Grant and Wes

All I can add is that Grant's recognition among the "jazz aware" segment of the pubic (tiny segment though it may be) has gone way up over the past 10 to 15 years. Back in the late 80's, while Grant was not forgotten his memory was kind of in limbo. Now, in contrast, just how many books are out about him? He's become one of the most admired jazz guitarists of the 60's, if not THE most admired. But this hasn't much seeped into the mainstream of course. One way for THAT to happen would be if a track or two from Idle Moments or Solid, say, was included in the soundtrack of a huge movie blockbuster (of the $400 million domestic variety); then people might get curious about Grant. I'm not holding by breath though.
  15. He had a long, rich, full life. Pardon me if it's been mentioned already, but the documentary about Shaw, "Time Is All You've Got" is excellent. One of the great clarinetists in all of jazz, and, according to many, a real character.
  16. Don't see it.

    Feb 15 RVGs

I don't have Basra, and look forward to checking it out.
  18. I also knew him more for his sf magazine and novel illustrations. Wow, the world of popular art is taking some major hits in this new year, with both Eisner and Freas passing away. Freas was quite simply one of the best sf illustraters of the 20th century, and a personal favorite. RIP
  19. OK, I know he was well into his 80's, but he was the kind of guy that you thought would just go on forever. Sad news indeed. RIP
  20. Yeah, I actually watched the commercials as they came during the shows, then watched them with subtitles. The result is I feel my life would not be complete without a bolt of that fabric.
  21. I've got this stuff on a 2-LP re-issue with a silly, round-framed cover painting, if memory serves. A double-album re-issue, called, I believe, "Tallest Trees." Absolutely great music, dumb cover. That's the rekkid biz fer ya.
  22. Thanks much. I'll keep an eye open.
  23. I think it's what Ian Dury wanted you to hit him with.
  24. My favorite re-issue of the year is All Music----who am I to disagree with Cadence? B-) The Ellington re-issues are right up there too. Oh, and Black Fire.
