Between 1986 and 1993 I was a regular visitor to Stereo Jack's! Bought a LOT of great stuff there. Welcome to the board, Jack. I miss Cambridge. I miss BOSTON. (I miss New England...)
None of what his son says comes as a surprise. Shaw was known to have driven away every friend he ever had. Artistic brilliance and personal cussedness often reside in the same human being... So what?
All I can add is that Grant's recognition among the "jazz aware" segment of the pubic (tiny segment though it may be) has gone way up over the past 10 to 15 years. Back in the late 80's, while Grant was not forgotten his memory was kind of in limbo. Now, in contrast, just how many books are out about him? He's become one of the most admired jazz guitarists of the 60's, if not THE most admired. But this hasn't much seeped into the mainstream of course. One way for THAT to happen would be if a track or two from Idle Moments or Solid, say, was included in the soundtrack of a huge movie blockbuster (of the $400 million domestic variety); then people might get curious about Grant. I'm not holding by breath though.
He had a long, rich, full life. Pardon me if it's been mentioned already, but the documentary about Shaw, "Time Is All You've Got" is excellent. One of the great clarinetists in all of jazz, and, according to many, a real character.
I also knew him more for his sf magazine and novel illustrations. Wow, the world of popular art is taking some major hits in this new year, with both Eisner and Freas passing away. Freas was quite simply one of the best sf illustraters of the 20th century, and a personal favorite. RIP
Yeah, I actually watched the commercials as they came during the shows, then watched them with subtitles. The result is I feel my life would not be complete without a bolt of that fabric.
I've got this stuff on a 2-LP re-issue with a silly, round-framed cover painting, if memory serves. A double-album re-issue, called, I believe, "Tallest Trees." Absolutely great music, dumb cover. That's the rekkid biz fer ya.
My favorite re-issue of the year is All Music----who am I to disagree with Cadence? B-)
The Ellington re-issues are right up there too.
Oh, and Black Fire.
