  1. MORE than one album you say? Then it's either Tina Brooks or Herbie Nichols.
  2. For sheer consistency as a leader, it's hard to beat Walter Davis, Jr. One album, totally solid, high quality, idiomatic stuff from start to finish. Way to go Walter!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  3. For once, I'm glad I don't live in Europe.
  4. Makes a LOT of sense, with a lot of music. For me, some music gets so internalized ("digested" you might say) that there's no point in listening to it anymore. Of course, when this happens with all music, it'll be time to kill myself.
  5. One thing that gets me is the switching of "here" and "hear." Here: A description of where something is. Hear: What your ears do.
  6. You and me both.
  7. I have four of the Jazztet albums that are on this set, and each one is a classic, IMHO. The Jazztet didn't get their due as one of the great small bands of their era. In some ways better than Brown & Roach.
  8. Quite right, Harold, but to me there are few things more bizarre in music than the backing vocals on some Wilson singles where the women sound like they are being electrocuted. It's so over the top that it's oddly fascinating. An "ugly beauty" thing, if you will. But the Jordanaires---they just plain suck. I agree with you Clem; they're loathsome.
  9. Yeah, I even taped it. I wish more radio shows reviewed jazz...it's great when the reviewer can play you clips of what he's talking about. Seriously.
  10. Yep, I've seen the first 6 around, always priced somewhere in the 50's. Makes the direct-from-Mosaic price of $39 seem like a bargain.
  11. Ordered it. With luck, it may come before Christmas.
  12. Holy trombone, Batman! Time to break out the Fuller Mosaic!
  13. The Prisoner, without doubt. (Terrible cover, though.)
  14. Anybody catch the Duke Ellington music playing near the end of one 1st-season episode?
  15. I agree. In the picture, the thing LOOKS a lot heavier than 121!
  16. Jack Wilson---Easterly Winds Initially held off on this, but it's quite good.
  17. With the right script and director, he would burn as Mingus!
  18. I've only seen season one on DVD, so I shouldn't even be reading this! (But what the hell.)
  19. "...and sets in the West."
  20. I'd like to see that Star Trek Christmas show.
  21. Good man. You won't be sorry.
  22. I have been disappointed with 'Breaking point'.I find 'Ready for Freddie' much better but I don't think I am in the majority.I have read a lot of good reviews on 'Breaking point'. I'm not a big fan of Breaking Point either. Though that is probably due to my limited tolerance for more "outside" jazz.
  23. Benny is looking good! That black & white one would look perfect as a calender photo.
  24. Just wanted to mention that one! I really like it! Betty is sounding so fresh, and Candoli and Costa (vibes only) add very much to this album. Mike, she does some awesome scatting, always easy and light-footed and -hearted, often funny, always humorous. Really nice! (Oh, did I send you a copy of this one? Just occurred I may have, but I'm not sure!) Here's a small cover scan: Excellent album! I must admit, I got it because it was recommended to me by a waiter. I asked what they were playing in the resturaunt, and he showed me the CD case. I found it one or two days later, used, in a local store. Sometimes life is good.

Will have to give Songs For Swingin' Lovers and A Swingin' Affair a spin today. It's a nutty, koo-koo kind of celebration, I know.
