I hear you. Remakes blow. And who could stand in for Walter Matthau's nose coming back in the door before the rest of him after the bad guy sneezes? Well....not ALL remakes. There's the John Huston/Humphrey Bogart version of The Maltese Falcon, which was actually the third attempt. Glad they did THAT one. And His Girl Friday, a remake of the original The Front Page (1931) and a genuine masterpiece. But I rather agree that there's little reason to think that the remake of Pelham will be on that exalted level.

I used to work with a guy in the early 90's who was a big "Are You Being Served" fan. He would rattle off huge chunks of dialog at the drop of a hat. Naturally, people started avoiding him after a while.

97! Wow. So that means back in the "Streets of San Francisco" days he was merely in his 50's. What a run. RIP

Saw a fascinating documentary on the life of Thomas Merton on public television a week or so ago. Kept your comments in mind. While his life may have been a failure in some ways, I found the film utterly riveting.

I never got 'V". Either it was convoluted/gimmicky or I'm a moron. Both, probably. It seemed like the characters introduced at the beginning didn't matter much after, red herrings or maybe he got bored. But so did I, and never picked it up again. The bit about a guy playing diminished 5ths----or whatever it was----on a plastic alto was cute, nothing more. I thought he was trying to show how clever he was---not my favorite writing approach. Just one moron's opinion.......... Don't feel bad. I had much the same reaction to V----but after all, perhaps I'm a little conservative in the types of fiction I'll accept. Pale Fire is about as far "out" as I'm prepared to go (and get any pleasure from it, that is.)

Oh, yeah! That chapter is what yanked SF out of my hands and told me that these here 'classics' thingies might be worth checking out. Wow! You can remember the specific thing that did it for you. I can't remember, but in my case I don't think it was one thing but just sort an increasing tendency toward so-called "mainstream" fiction in 11th and 12th grade. Whereas, if you had tried to get me to go that way in 9th grade I'd have probably replied, "What do I need the mainstream for? I've got Ursula K. LeGuin!"

I agree. And don't even get me started on Conan. I just don't understand his appeal AT ALL. These kids and their comedians.. Actually, I rather like Conan.
