  1. I have the Bobo and it's not too bad, but I think I was expecting something a bit different. There are some good straight-ahead songs like "Psychedelic Blues," but the songs that I think of when I think of this album are the latin-tinged elevator music songs with Willie on vocals. I'll give it the rolleyes because that's what my wife does every time I listen to this album. It's not a bad album, and the sound is very good, which is one of the things I've enjoyed most about the Verve LP repro series. I'm glad that we're not spending a lot of time discussing how much we hate the remastering on the Verve reissues here. From my experience, the remastering has been very consistent with all of these (the only complaints I've heard are in regard to Dizzy Gillespie's "Afro"). While Verve has put out some nice reissues recently, I agree with Shrdlu that they're sitting on a ton of great material, and I do wish they'd either reissue more of it or license it to Mosaic.
  2. I got that message too, but at least they shipped the other three I ordered right away.
  3. It should be OK to do the Selects. I tried putting them in my shopping cart and then adding True Blue titles, and it worked OK. I received the Illinois Jacquet set and 4 CD's today. Very quick shipping and great service!
  4. I threw in a note with my Mosaic order asking them to ship this title if they had it available. The box just came to my office, and the CD was inside. Big thumbs up to Mosaic!
  5. Glad I could help a few people out. I picked up 4 myself: Mulligan/Desmond - Two of a Mind (older version, unfortunately) Paul Gonsalves - Ellingtonia Moods and Blues Johnny Hodges/Wild Bill Davis - In Atlantic City C-Jam All-Stars - Diminuendo, Crescendo and Blues Sometimes working for a corporate monster does have its advantages!
  6. Although most of the CD's are comps, it's a pretty good deal. Bluebird Jazz Sale
  7. I decided to go for the Jacquet. The sound clips are pretty decent, but this will be a stretch for me. I never listen to music from this era, so it should be fun.
  8. Damn, I've been looking at this one for a while and just tried to order it from Mosaic as a part of the promotion, but it's not available right now.

  10. My Byrd/Adams set doesn't have a hinge. Most of my newer sets (Stitt, Turrentine, etc.) don't have the hinged covers. I actually prefer the sets without the hinge. Why your Byrd set would have a hinge, as opposed to mine not having a hinge, is beyond me.

  17. I got home from the Iowa City Jazz Festival early this morning, and thought I'd share some digital photos I took at the show. Had a good time, heard some great music, and even met Rooster_Ties and got to chat with him for a couple minutes. Anyway, here are some photos: GERI ALLEN

  19. Dr. Strange. I was hoping for someone cool, like the Silver Surfer.
  20. I am taking some time off from work. I don't go back until next Tuesday, which will be nice. On Saturday morning I'm driving down to Iowa City for the jazz festival, and will be driving back on Sunday night. The rest of the time, I haven't a clue what I'll do with myself. My wife is in Utah visiting her family, and won't be back until next Wednesday. I don't know anyone outside of work and never go anywhere with anyone except my wife, so the next few days will be very, very quiet.

Want to buy the Mosaic from me? It's not doing much for me. I've only listened to discs 1-2. The others are sealed, and the box and booklet are mint. $70, postpaid. Send me a PM if interested.
  22. Adam, They were a bit slow in getting to me. I think it took them 4-5 days just to confirm the order, and then it took another 10-12 days for me to get the items. The Monk set didn't have a booklet with it, and was not in a box. The Pepper set was sealed, with booklet. Hope they get to you soon! I've only listened to the first disc of each set so far, but am really liking what I've heard so far.
  23. Andrew's easily in my top five (which is actually only five people! ). One thing that puts him higher up on the list for me is his very memorable compositions. Albums like Judgment, Andrew!!!, and Point of Departure are great examples of this, and are some of my favorite albums that I can turn to in my jazz collection when I want something familiar. I'll be seeing Andrew this coming Sunday at the Iowa City Jazz Festival - can't wait!
  24. I don't understand "Monk and Coltrane" as a good introduction to either artist. Both are demanding and distinct musicians and their one CD together is the last thing I would use to introduce them to a newbie. I merely mentioned that as a somewhat accessible CD. It swings, and it's not too out there for either of the two musicians. I've shared it with people and they like it. My experience with newcomers to jazz is that they just want to hear good songs in the beginning, and don't care so much about the individual artists. For good songs, I think Monk with Trane definitely fits the bill.
