  1. He also speaks of following Lee Konitz and wondering what it would be to BE Lee.
  2. Sorry to hear this. Joel used to come up to my attic room in Buffalo (early '60s) to listen to bass players in my collection. At the time he played with vibes Al Francis. I was happy to see him successful in years after that. R.I.P.
  3. I heard Art Pepper there when he was debuting the Jazz Legend album. Hampton Hawes played a remarkable solo on "Here's That Rainy Day" and Art said "I wish we had a tape machine to catch that one," especially poignant since Lester Koenig (of Contemporary Records) was present.
  4. Valerie, great weather. See my photos from today on Facebook? Gloria says hello. David ddgitin@gmail.com
  5. Thanks, everyone! We had a good breakfast by the ocean (we're on the island of Key Largo, Florida) and later walked by the Gulf of Mexico where we saw manitees, tarpon, pitcher. Gloria gave me three CDs: Chick Corea & Stefano Bollani, Jim Hall & Pat Metheny (current reissue), and Grateful Dead Europe '72 Vol. 2.
  6. I heard Nancy and George together (on a bill with Canonball Adderley...they had the same manager) 50 years ago in Buffalo. Memorable (clearly)!
  7. He and the band performed at NorthSea a few years ago (2005-ish) but sadly it was a very mixed bag. I have it on DVD somewhere as part of a compilation. I was there. Band was great. Sly was a mess, had to be coaxed on stage several times. I split and heard someone else instead.
  8. Anyone in Tucson area? I'm flying there in a few hours for a poetry reading on Tuesday (7 PM) at University of Arizona Poetry Center with Sherwin Bitsui. I'll be reading from my new book "The Journey Home." If you attend, come up and say hello?
  9. I agree. However, it was a great reading with lots of poets in attendance. Eventually, an audio will be streaming on Moe's website. Moe's always was a poetry center for the Bay Area, along with City Lights. I remember when I became very interested in Robert Duncan, the only places that even heard of him were these two stores. I checked Moe's website, and David is not up yet. Robert Duncan and George Oppen are two poets I miss (always expect to see them at readings). Now my friends and I are 'elders.'
  10. I remember that Moe was defiant about his cigars when Berkeley banned smoking in stores. He made sure that one was always lit. I would have loved to be at the reading, but I am now on the other side of the world from my home town (Berkeley). And I'm back in the Keys, 3000 miles away...
  11. I agree. However, it was a great reading with lots of poets in attendance. Eventually, an audio will be streaming on Moe's website.
  12. I'll be returning to the San Francisco Bay Area to give two poetry readings. Tomorrow (Wed) night I'll be at Moe's on Telegraph Ave in Berkeley at 7:30 (reading with George Mattingly) and Sunday at 2 P.M. I'll be reading at Bird & Beckett bookstore in San Francisco. Say hello if you come by! Both readings are free admission.
  13. I was there when Ornette played with The Dead at Oakland Coliseum in Feb. 1993 (Mardi Gras). Ornette opened and then later after intermission played the Space jam with the band leading into Love Light and Stella Blue.

    Thank you, Margaret!
  15. In the '60s there were some exciting ones including Alice Coltrane with Frank Lowe (his first big gig), Max Roach & Abbey Lincoln, Cecil Taylor on a bill with Miles Davis & Gil Evans (Carmen McRae opened), The Last Poets, among others...
  16. Audrey's was THE place to buy jazz records. It 'saved' me.
  17. The 'Cary Grant' voice of Joe Rico still rings in my ears!
  18. I attended this concert at Kleinhans and was able to go backstage! Thanks for giving me the specific date (I knew the month and year).
  19. Have a great one, Nate. Listen to music, read poetry!
  20. I heard Brubeck & Rushing live on a bill with Carmen McRae in Buffalo, New York early/mid sixties...
  21. KAZU for nearly 20 years! Glad you remember! Cheers, David Thanks for the birthday greetings. Gloria and I had a jazz brunch by the ocean (Key Largo, Florida) where Frank plays guitar a la Burrell each Sunday; later we walked by Anne's Beach, watching the hermit crabs, various birds, and the deep blue water. Best to my friends here!
