  1. Volume 10 out now JB 10
  2. This seems like a appropriate place to ask : What happened to the tapes found by Ravi in the Coltrane Home Loft? Did I imagine this? A few years ago Ravi found some tapes in his loft and was going to put them up for auction. They were not actually auctioned, they were bought privately before the auction. UMG were believed to be the buyers. Was the result of this just the things issued on the 2cd sets of 'Coltrane' and "Ballads'? I was hoping there was lot more.
  3. I think that they can be either needledrops or copied from CDs depending on availability I read somewhere (maybe here) that one of the Tubby Hayes was from LP. I think they are usually very dull sounding and will avoid them where it is easy to do so. The new Edmond Hall is very tempting though. I am talking about the '4LPS on 2CDs' series here. I think the Benny Goodman box sounds pretty good and I also like the Lionel Hampton series.
  4. Can someone with the Prevue CD please comment on the sound. Does it sound like a needledrop? Is it stereo or mono?Ok, spinning it now... it sounds ok - not great (some weird sound on the cymbals, the kind of thing that was noted with a few Blue Note CD reissues as "due to deterioration of the master tapes...", I guess). Definitely stereo.I'm in no position to confirm it's not a needledrop (I can't tell from distortion or any artifacts that hence it has to be a cleaned-up needledrop), but to me it doesn't sound like one. For sure, there are none of the obvious signs during the quiet parts or before and after the music. Also, to be noted, is the mix-up of the setlist:printed on the tray & sequence of Nat Hentoff's notes:1) Straight Ahead2) Violets for Your Furs3) Green Street Scene4) Chafic5) You Know That6) I Remember Clifford7) Short Bridgeactual sequence on my CD:1) Straight Ahead2) Violets for Your Furs3) Chafic4) I Remember Clifford5) Green Street Scene6) You Know That7) Short Bridgeso, #3-6 are jumbled around... no idea why or if it's a simple mistake - but it's easy to tell as everyone knows "I Remember Clifford" and Hentoff refers to "Chafic" as a waltz (which #3 of the CD clearly is).The Prevue CD has Hentoff's original and Mark Gardner's 1975 liner notes and it states that the reissue was produced by Don Schlittenn (mastered by Krieg Wunderlich - is that a real name or a weird nom-de-plume?Anyway, great album for sure! Thank you. From your description of the sound I think we can say that the Prevue and Fresh Sound CDs are sonically more or less equivalent. The Fresh Sound does have the tracks in the correct order though. I don't want to be a party-pooper but I played the Fresh Sounds CD this morning and it's pretty lo-fi. It IS in stereo but it's that sort of stereo that's left and right but no middle. It doesn't sound like a needle drop but the sound is very harsh and I find it difficult to listen to. However, the music itself is good so I suppose if this is as good as it gets....... I don't think anyone has claimed that this is a very good recording. The main thrust has been to determine which issues are not from a needledrop and are in stereo. In general I agree with your comments about the sound but I don't find it difficult to listen to.

  6. Obviously this is of no interest to you non-brits but according to Wikipedia (yes I know) JARO was indeed part of the J Arthur Rank Organisation. Wiki Link J Arthur Rank films were well known for starting with a Charles Atlas lookalike hitting a large gong with a hammer. I would love to know the names of the people who connect J Arthur Rank with Babs Gonzalez, J R Monterose and Kenny Dorham and whoever else recorded for JARO.
  7. Seeing the close up for that JARO LP and seeing the logo has made me realise what JARO stands for .... J Arthur Rank Organisation The Rank Organisation was a film distributor in England in the 50s,60s, 70s and possibly longer. If you know cockney rhyming slang you might have some idea what 'having a j arthur' was all about. I am amazed if they had anything to do with producing Jazz LPs in the early 60s.

  9. They are theoretically legit in Europe because of the 50 year rule (but not legit in the US). However the labels distributed by Absolute Distribution do seem to issue some stuff less than 50 years old. For example I bought the Monterose Fresh Sound CD long before the session was 50 years old. Of course there are lots of people on this board who won't touch them under any circumstances but sometimes they are the only way of obtaining certain titles.
  10. That Gambit 2 CD set looks very interesting as an alternative to the Fresh Sound single CD (already have the Blue Note LP) Absolute Distribution I would love to know what the sound is like.
  11. Here is the JARO LP Cover I just listened to the Fresh Sound CD again all the way through. I do not hear any LP clicks and pops but there is a little distortion on the tenor at times. It could well be an LP that has been through some processing. I don't think I am sufficiently knowledgable to say for certain that this is or is not a needledrop. Definitely stereo though. Has anyone heard the Gambit?
  12. Fresh Sound single CD. This one
  13. I have the Fresh Sound CD and one thing I can say for certain is that it is in stereo. I don't hear any LP artifacts but I guess that doesn't mean that it isn't a needledrop - they can work wonders nowadays can't they. I would say the sound is perfectly acceptable without being great, there is some distortion at times.
  14. This is the thread I was looking for!!! Thanks, Jim! But I'm not getting the promised results (the "clicking on the highlighted arrow in the lower left corner for the selected item" that will bring up multiple images). I simply do not see any highlighted arrow. I've just tried dragging in two images to one album. I have a Mac; could this be a Windows-only feature? Do you know for sure that you have more than one image on the selected item? There are different ways of adding images - some add so that you can have more than one, and some replace , so that you will never have more than one image. If you do a 'get info' on the track you will be able to see how many images are attached. If an item has more than one image, you should see that little arrow by the artwork display. I am using a mac as well and it works for me. I never intentionally put more than one image on a track though
  15. One way to do this is a follows :-- 1) Select all the tracks you are interested in 2) Right click and select 'Get Info' 3) Select the artwork tab 4) You can now add as much artwork as you wish, or delete it. If a track has more than one piece of artwork, an arrow appears in the artwork window in bottom left that enables you to scroll between the different pieces of artwork Hope this helps
  16. Jazz Dialogue and 1/2 of Quartet is a Quartet will not be included. No Sun in Venice is a.k.a One Never Knows Why won't the MJQ tracks on 'A quartet is a quartet' be on the set? They were recorded in 1963. Part of that album is by other quartets. No MJQ so no need to include them. Sorry, I don't understand what you mean. One side of the LP, 4 tracks, are by he MJQ. Why wouldn't they be included. I don't expect the tracks by the Quartetto de Milano and the Hungarian Gypsy Quartet to be included but I do expect the tracks by the MJQ to be included.

  18. Here is one of those Dave Carey ads in Jazz Journal, from June 1961 Dave Carey I believe was a drummer who played with various trad/mainstream bands, mostly in the 50s EDIT: should have used google - lots about Dave Carey here ...Dave Carey
  19. Chris Wellard's was in New Cross. The Streatham Shop was Dave Carey's Swing Shop, they used to advertise on the inside back page of Jazz Journal. It wasn't much more than a cubby hole, I remember well buying 'New York Eye and Ear Control' and some Excello blues LPs there.
  20. My set has just arrived, and I am in England. Loading the disks in now. I was very happy to see that the disks are already in Gracenotes, I wonder if Mosaic did that? Set No 859
  21. Wow. Just got my shipping notification. Edit: No, wait, it says it will ship in the next 24 - 48 hours.
  22. I have listened to 'Regal Records In New Orleans' again now. There IS a tenor solo on "Yeah Yeah Yeah' - typical honking tenor of the period with nothing to distinguish it as being Hank 'Each Time' has a very straight laced tenor obbligato to a very straight laced piano solo. Nothing that need get anyone excited. Apart from that, nothing. PG's vocals and Eddie Barefield are featured on other tracks. Al Armstrong (tp) Eddie Barefield (cl, as) Hank Mobley (ts) Frank Campbell (bars) Paul Gayten (p, vo) Larry Gains (b) unknown (d) The Coleman Brothers (vocal group -1,2) NYC, 1950-1951 1. 1329 Goodnight Irene Regal 3281 2. 1330 Oh, La La - 3. 1333 Gold Ain't Everything Regal 3282 4. 1334 Suzette - 5. 1392 If You Got The Money Regal 3302 6. 1393 I'm So Crazy For Love - 7. 1426 Yeah, Yeah, Yeah Regal 3312 8. 1427 Each Time - 9. 24. Funny reading about Syl's problems with record companies. 3 or 4 years ago I saw him in London at the Barbican and between numbers he took a copy of one of his ACE CD reissues out of his pocket and said that he had never received any money for it. Someone in the audience, presumably an ACE employee, shouted at him that he would talk to him after the show. Syl then got back to doing what he does best, singing, but according to that article he is now pretty good at litigating.
