  1. While I was always "fine" with KD's playing, I don't think I really ever got it until I got the RVG of "Trompeta Tocatta" last year. That one really opened up my ears. Its definitely my favorite album under his name, and it gave me a whole new appreciation for his other ones, like "Whistle Stop" and "Una Mas". "Quiet Kenny" is another favorite. "Jazz Contrasts" is excellent and doesn't seem to be discussed much. Some peak Sonny Rollins on that one, and KD sounds great.
  2. Ghost of Miles did a radio show about Miles & Sam Rivers that has some performances from that version of the quintet that aren't in the box set, which I just listened to a couple weeks ago. An interesting supplement to the box set. The radio show is archived, and definitely worth a listen.
  3. This is essential music IMO. One of my favorite box sets in my collection.
  4. That's one of my favorite concert videos. Great one!
  5. Aside from the Hold Steady, I've been spinning the following lately: The Shins - "Wincing the Night Away" The Decemberists - "The Crane Wife" Cold War Kids - "Robbers and Cowards" TV on the Radio - "Return to Cookie Mountain" Also, just picked up the new release by The Arcade Fire called "Neon Bible". Haven't listened to it yet, but if its half as good as "Funeral", I'll be very happy.
  6. An excellent album by an excellent band.
  7. Wow....that sounds like a cool show! Please post a review if you get the chance.
  8. As usual, his music was excellent. Although in this film, due to the mix of original score and popular songs from the era, the score didn't stand out as much as Shire's scores have stood out in other films. Strangely enough, "Zodiac" at times gave me a similar feeling that "The Conversation" did, which is one of my favorite movie scores of all time, and which also happens to be composed by David Shire.
  9. Anyone see this one yet? Its the first must-see American film of 2007, no doubt, and may be director David Fincher's finest hour. Its a fascinating film that was obviously very well researched and made with alot of passion. The film definitely has an eerie, creepy feeling about it that stays with you, but its not a "scary movie" per se. It works well on alot of levels, but works best as showcasing the mental and emotional breakdown of its characters. A minor epic in a way, I enjoyed it very much. It also has, for my money, one of the scariest scenes in recent film history. For those who have seen it, I'm refering to the basement scene.
  10. For the second week in a row, I was treated to some magical music at the Green Mill. The Ben Allison Quartet was in town this past weekend. His band included Ron Horton, Steve Cardenas and Michael Sarin. They played alot of music from their most recent CD "Cowboy Justice", as well as a few other surprises, such as John Lennon's "Jealous Guy" and the theme from Midnight Cowboy. The band was excellent. I was there with a group of people who really aren't that familiar with jazz, but everybody really, really enjoyed the show, and a couple of them even purchased CDs on the way out! Always a great thing to see. We stayed for all three sets and had an excellent time. Check this band out if you can!! Really talented group of players who really don't sound like anything else I've ever heard.
  11. I'll be pounding 24s of Coors Light off the tap in about an hour. Its been a hellish week at work.

  15. Saw it back when it came out. Its an excellent anthology...very insightful. I loved it. However, if you're not a fanatic, it may be a bit more detail than you need.
  16. Bears got Lovie through 2011!
  17. Don't have the DVD, but that is an excellent film!

  19. Thanks guys.
  20. They are a hell of a band. I'd like to see this.
  21. Was wondering if anybody took advantage of this offer by Concord to get a replacement disc? If so, how long did it take for them to get you the replacement?
  22. One of the things I love about my new home here in the river valley is the wide variety of birds. The majestic great blue herons are common, as are the smaller white ones. We have a VERY healthy population of red tail hawks. And lots of goldfinches, chickadees, and cardinals. Saw a bluebird not too long ago as well. On a slightly separate note, I was cleaning the snow off my balcony last week, and I saw a coyote walking down my cul-de-sac with a rabbit in its mouth. It was very a very surreal thing to see.] Edit to add that there have been a few sightings of peregrine falcons nearby as well. I keeping my fingers crossed to see one of those.
