  1. Its a good time to be a jazz fan in Chicago. The Jazz Showcase, one of the best rooms in the world, has a stellar lineup from now to the end of the year. McCoy Tyner, Dave Holland, Pharoah Sanders, Danillo Perez, David Sanchez, Louis Hayes, Rufus Reid, Gary Burton, Roy Hargrove and others are booked for week-long gigs. For the first time in a while, I'll be spending more on live music than on CDs. Probably a good thing.
  2. This is such a wonderful set!! Went right to near the top of my favorites list after the first listen. What really moved me was those Golson quartet sessions. Some absolutely heart-wrenching playing on these sides. Its really something how once you think you know about an artist, you'll discover something new that shows you never really knew thier work. Beautiful stuff.
  3. I'm sure the set is fantastic, as is everything Dolphy puts out. However, as mentioned above, many of the sessions are being remastered and re-released. The first Five Spot volume with Booker Little, as well as Far Cry, Out There, and Outward Bound have already been reissued in FANTASTIC new sound quality. One can assume that sessions like Waldron's Quest and the rest of the Five Spot issues will be reissued soon as well. If it was any other company other than Fantasy, I'd say just go for the box no question (which is still not bad advice), but these Fantasy reissues just sound SO crisp and SO beautiful, that I'm sure you'd end up replacing most of the key sessions in the box. So I guess you could go either way. I hope this post doesn't upset anyone, but when it comes to audio quality, I like to get the best bang for the buck.
  4. Didn't even know this was coming out....thanks CJ Shearn. Just ordered it. Tain is always a great listen, and throw in some live Kenny Garrett and I'm willing to bet this will be a really good one.
  5. My Bears just put on one of the best first halfs I've ever seen!
  6. Just gave Dicks Picks 11 a spin last night. Its a show from 1972 from the East Coast somewhere. Fantastic. Hadn't heard it in a couple years, I forgot how good it was. Highest possible recommendation for all Dead fans.

    Bobby Watson

I just got really lucky at my local used CD store...picked up copies of Bobby's "Tailor Made" and "Present Tense", both which are out of print. $4.99 a piece!! Haven't gotten to spin them yet. Any comments?
  8. I enjoy his work, especially his trio dates. His chemistry with Tain Watts is incredible...probably the closest thing to Elvin/Coltrane we have right now. His playing seems to have mellowed out over the past few years.
  9. Peter Tosh's "Legalize It" is one of the best albums of all time.
  10. Birds of a Feather is great. Saw em a couple years ago.
  11. I was spinning "Fiddler on the Roof" yesterday. What a great album....quite underappreciated as well, it seems. Julian was one of the great players of this music. You could always count on him for a wonderful solo. Those live recordings with Miles & Trane are the best. Especially when Cannonball solos after Trane....he really pushes it!
  12. I got this set along with the Jazztet set. I have listened to the first 4 discs so far. I must say that I am enjoying this set very much. The trio dates with Joe Farrell are my favs so far, but all of it has been quite enjoyable. The only thing I think I'm not quite warming up to is the extra percussionists on some of the dates. There are congas, tambourines, and other instruments in the background. I ask this...why on earth would ELVIN JONES want to add more percussion to music that has him playing the drums??? The guy fills every space you could possibly imagine, and can make his rhythms sound as dense or as hollow as he wants. If there has been ANY drummer in the entire history of jazz who does NOT need anyone else supporting him percussively, its Emperor Jones. Elvin plays so much drums, that alot of time those conga players make the overall sound seem cluttered. Man, I remember years ago when I first heard Coltrane's "Live at the Village Vanguard" for the first time, I thought there was two drummers!!! Elvin sounds like he has three sets of arms and legs! The last thing he needs is some corny conga playing in the background.

    Wayne Shorter

For me, it doesn't get much better than the Plugged Nickel sets. His playing on there is unbelievable. Something about his playing on "In A Silent Way" really gets me. Very powerful. To venture outside of Miles' music, he also plays fantastic on McCoy Tyner's "Extentions"
  14. I'm looking forward to that AEC disc!
  15. You'll probably get it on Thursday.
  16. I agree with this. I'd also have to throw in my John Lennon Anthology. Some great recordings on there. And every track across the 4 discs is unreleased stuff.
  17. From the ones I've heard, on a basic, non-SACD player, the K2's sound much better. They are probably keeping the K2s around for those of us without SACD. Not that the SACD hybrids don't sound good (Dolphy's "Out There" sounds great), but they are not quite as good as the K2s on a basic player.
  18. Has anyone heard this one?? I picked it up, and the first 5 tracks were quite good IMO. Some very inspired playing on this disc. You can tell that being in each other's company really inspires the guys to play thier hardest. However, as I hit the last two tracks, (both with are very long, somewhat free, and require quite a bit of attention), I hit a really bad traffic jam, and started getting very frustrated. Therefore, I couldn't make a fair judgment on these last two. Gotta give this one another spin. Any opinions?
  19. I've given this album about 4 spins since I got it last month, and its definitely a winner. Beautiful playing by everyone involved. This album serves as a showcase for Von's mastery of jazz, and to me seems like a summation of his career. His release from a couple years back, "The Improviser" seemed like a return to center stage for him, and featured the hard-swinging, unpredictable Von Freeman. This album is more of a highlight for his beautiful melodic concepts....his complete freedom to speak the language of jazz in a way completely his own. It seems that with these last two records, he's made somewhat of a "comeback". Granted he has never slowed down, but it seems that now he's really getting recognized on a larger scale for his work, and that's a great thing to see. Everyone should go out and pick up this great new album. You'll be getting what's guarenteed to be one of the finer albums of the year, and you'll be supporting a guy who is truly a class act in every way.

  21. http://www.cduniverse.com/help/help.asp?page=shipping So the only possibility is to wait with the order until the dates match for the "ship together" option. The pre-order price is usually avalable until the release date. This is the response I got from CD Universe. This had never happened before...I guess it was just coincidence that all my preorders had release dates which were close to each other. I'm glad....I was thinking I was going to have to stop shopping there.

    Destination Out

Welcome Michael. I have not heard the RVG, but am interested in what people have to say, particularly when comparing it to the sound on the Moncur Mosaic Select set, which is also in 24 bit and was just issued last year. This is one of my favorite sessions.
  23. It doesn't work. Its the same thing as when I ordered. It only gives the "Ship when Availiable". I wrote a complaint e-mail to CD Universe last night. I'll post the response when I get one.
  24. Gerry Mulligan Concert Band - disc 3. What a revelation this set was!!
  25. .....when you are pre-ordering items? If they don't all come out on the same day, you can't choose the "ship together" option, you have to do "ship as availiable"! It was never like this before. I pre-ordered a bunch of CDs (new Art Ensemble, Joe Henderson reissue, Don Byron, and Miles set) and all of them come out on different days, so I've gotta pay shipping for each item! Does anyone know why they did this? Before, they would hold your pre-ordered item and ship it once everything was availiable. This sucks.
