  1. A couple of classics are making their way to DVD in September. Hitchcock's "Strangers on a Train" is being released in a 2 disc special edition on September 7. And on September 21, Fellini's "La Dolce Vita" is getting the 2 disc deluxe treatment as well. I'll be picking up both for sure!
  2. For drummers, the ones I can always immediately identify are Art Blakey and Elvin Jones.
  3. I spun this one a couple of days ago. It's a strong one, IMO. The chemistry between the musicians is very nice.
  4. Mark, its looking like I'm going to end up going to the Saturday show instead. I have a dinner for a friend's birthday to go to on Sunday that I completely forgot about. I'll catch up with you at one of these days!! Tons of good shows through the rest of the year, and I'm sure I'll be at the matinee for more than one of them.
  5. "Bounce" took some getting used to for me. I honestly didn't like it for a long time, but after hearing one praise after another, I kept giving it more chances. And it paid off. I quite enjoy it now. I find it to be very innovative, and the musicianship is first rate. I wouldn't say it's Blanchard's best, but its definitely a good one that I'd recommend.
  6. Cool pics, Mark. I ended up going on Wed. night as I had some unexpected company from out of town, and they were desperate to see some jazz. What a show! He's gotta be one of the swinging-ist sax players alive.
  7. I saw this band during the week they recorded this album, and they were great! Larry is playing very well.
  8. They're at the Jazz Showcase next week!!!!!
  9. Any word on whose directing and starring in this?
  10. ....and what were you doing in the red light district??? Ummmm.....eating....... ...what were you eating?? Lamb pizza!!! Get your mind out of the gutter, Mark!!!
  11. ejp626, did you see him last year at the Green Mill? Megumi was playing with him then. I think she's been with him for a few years now. Its funny you mention that about the drummer, because when it comes to Osby shows, I've always felt that his choices in drummers could be better. He needs someone who can hang with those irregular compositions he plays.
  12. Yeah, I remember seeing David Sanchez, Dave Holland, Roy Hargrove, and Pharoah Sanders on there, but don't remember the months or days. And don't ever expect an answer to that e-mail. You won't get one.
  13. I'm heading out of town to Michigan this weekend. Had I known it was Osby's weekend at the Mill sooner, I would have gone to MI next weekend instead.
  14. ....and what were you doing in the red light district??? Ummmm.....eating....... Actually, I was in a comitted relationship at the time, so I looked but didn't touch. But now, being free and single, I'm not so sure the outcome would be the same!
  15. Fent99, I was there last year, and I went and heard some jazz at a real cool place called Cafe Alto. Don't remember exactly where it was, but it was not in the main district of the city near the train station, but south of there. Takes about 20 minutes to walk there from the Red Light district. Also, I remember when I was walking down those small, narrow streets that connect the big streets (they almost resemble the alleys we have in Chicago), I came across a Blue Note store. Nice place, but was a bit overpriced if I remember correctly. Don't remember the exact location of that one either, sorry. I guess my only excuse is.....I was in Amsterdam!! What a great city.......

    Black Fire

I must add my praises for this album. Its fantastic. Everyone who hasn't heard it should do so immediately.
  17. Miles Davis Quintet - 1965-1968 Ornette Coleman - Beauty is a Rare Thing: Complete Atlantic John Coltrane - Heavyweight Champion John Coltrane - Classic Quartet Studio recordings on Impulse! Charles Mingus - Passions of a Man: Complete Atlantic The Sonny Rollins RCA/Victor set is quickly moving up there as well.
  18. I'm certain you are wrong. You were thinking, what, they have one person write up the review but everyone listens and gives a rating? I thought I read this on another board. I don't think the entire staff listens, just the jazz staff. It made sense to me because there are so many cases where the review is glowing but the star rating is low, and vice versa.
  19. and then he gives it 3 stars. 3 stars!! PLEASE! I thought the stars rating system at AMG was the average rating of the staff, not just the single reviewer.
  20. I thought I read somewhere that McCoy Tyner is going to be touring with a new trio featuring Stanley Clarke and Billy Cobham. Anyone hear anything about this? I know that he's slated to play the Jazz Showcase later this year, but he already played the Showcase this year with Charnet Moffett and Eric Harland, so I'm assuming that he's playing with different cats this time around. I personally think that the prospect of a trio with Clarke and Cobham sounds exciting. Those are two cats with HUGE jazz chops, but who don't play much jazz these days. I think this could give their careers a bit of a "kick in the ass" if you will, at least in the jazz arena.
  21. Got it as well....can't wait to hear this one.
  22. I think last year Marcus Strickland was playing with him but I'd have to refer to my photographs to be sure. Sal may know as I belive he was there also....Sal??? Mark It was Marcus Strickland last year. Hopefully it's someone different this year....
  23. Frank Kimbrough Ed Simon Vijay Iyer Denny Zietlin Kenny Kirkland
  24. The box only goes up to 1963. None of the European stuff from 65 is on there.
