I saw Phil & Friends about 7 times between 2000 and 2002. They were great. They sounded much better than The Dead sound now. Jimmy Herring and Warren Haynes.....they played some great stuff.

Complete Argo/Mercury Art Farmer/Benny Golson/
sal replied to Out2Lunch's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Are you sure this is the Mosaic set? It might be one of those bogus European companies who release similar sets to Mosaic in similar time proximities. I didn't see the name "Mosaic" anywhere on that page. -
Thanks J.A.W. I just pre-ordered. I cannot wait for this one!!

Should I stay in Philly or move to Seattle?
sal replied to Peter Johnson's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Sounds like in either place, you will be doing just fine. You sound like smart, successful people, so I'm sure either place would ultimately work out for you. Therefore, I'm basing my vote on the the place that I just feel is "better".....Seattle. Its tough to beat the Pacific NW for its sheer beauty and laid-back atmosphere. Plus, Seattle is a really cool city with lots to do, great food, and jazz. Philly is a cool place as well (also with lots to do, great food and jazz), but I would choose Seattle in a heartbeat. Plus, having your family there would seal the deal for me. Like wesbed says, family is numero uno. -

I read it as well. Its one of the best ones I've ever read, right up there with the old Mingus ones! -
I've recently been turned on to Jean-Luc Goddard after seeing "Breathless", which is one of the best films I've ever seen. I'd like to see some more of his films, and "Alphaville" sounds very intriguing. Can anyone who has seen this give me some feedback on what they think of this one? A store by my house has a used copy of the Criterion Collection DVD, and I'm considering picking it up, even though I've never seen it, but I wanted to get some always-helpful opinions from this board first. Thanks! Sal

Its been out for a while! I got mine from Cadence about 3 weeks ago. Great stuff.

Like Jim says, they are not the most skilled players individualy, but what they create as a whole is special.. I have everything they have put out since "Friday Afternoon in the Universe", and I like all of them, including "Tonic". Their most recent one, "Uninvisible" is really tight. I think I've seen them live about 5 or 6 times in the past 6 years. Always a good time.

I almost voted for "One Flight Up", which has been in constant rotation since the RVG came out. I had never heard it before, and it was mind-blowing. But in the end, "Go" played a huge part in getting me into jazz, and it will probably always be my favorite.

Yet another reason to vote against Bush this fall.

These are his two best BN's in my opinion.

I don't know if I'd go that far yet, but she definitely sounds like "more than short-term" material. I'm happy for you, take5. Good luck with that.

Thanks Michael. I should have mentioned that the performance is being dedicated to Steve Lacy, so it makes perfect sense.

They're performing at the Chicago Jazz Fest this year. The band sounds interesting...Dave Douglas, Roswell Rudd, Don Byron, Jean-Jaques Avenel and John Betsch. Does anyone know anything about this unit? Have they performed together before? I wonder if it might be a one time thing. Any info would be appreciated!

Great job again, Mark! That top one of Lou playing the horn is awesome.

I just pre-ordered the Jazztet Mosaic, something I've never done before (pre-order a set, that is). And just for good riddance, I threw the Elvin Jones set in there as well!!

I saw this movie last night. I completely agree with you, wesbed, about the look of the film. It was fantastic looking. Michael Mann is really comfortable with that Los Angeles urban pallete. The music score, cinematography, and Tom Cruise's performance were all really tight. The scene in the dance club was one of the best action scenes ever. However, it ended there for me. To me, the monologue about jazz was the only part of the film that I felt was strongly written. Too much of the dialogue seemed tacky to me. Perhaps with a stronger lead actor it would have came off better, but Jamie Foxx just isn't there yet when it comes to dramatic acting. That part when Tom Cruse was asking him if he was stressed out...Foxx's facial expressions were just really fake looking. And Jada Pinckett...forget about it. Beautiful woman, horrible actress. I feel that if Mann had approached "Collateral" in a more similar way that he did "Heat" (aka more avant-garde) instead of the more mainstream way he did, the film could have been much better. Its close, but I can't quite recommend this film. 5 out of 10. A definite rental. By the way, when the jazz musicians were performing, was that just the recording of "Spanish Key", or were they playing it? Either way, it sounded good!

That's a tough question. I almost went with "Pharoah's Dance", but "Bitches Brew" is too unforgetable. That echoing trumpet, leading into that funky groove, the menacing keyboards, the guitar solo....its just perfect. What an amazing album!!

This is an incredible session indeed. I'm one of the few lucky people on this board who had never heard this session before. I think its become my favorite Jazz Messengers album. And while I do agree with you, Free For All, that Wayne is on fire, to me, this session belongs to Bu himself. I've NEVER, on any other session I've ever heard, heard him play the drums like that. He sounds superhuman. I think that's why everyone in the band plays so freakin' great on this....its a response to that drumming.

I didn't make it to any of the sets!

This is a great disc. Thanks for your original post about it, Jim. It gets more and more interesting with each listen. I wish there was more live material out there from this period of Sonny's career.
