Like jlhoots says, check the Reader. Its online at www.chicagoreader.com. Click on the music link, then the jazz link for a complete listing of jazz for the upcoming days/weeks. The Jazz Showcase is the classic place, but not to be missed is the Green Mill, which was Al Capone's old hangout, and Fred Anderson's Velvet Lounge. Plus, there's always jazz at nice venues that are not necessarily jazz clubs, but great places nonetheless. Also, I hear Green Dolphin Street is a really nice place, but I've never been there.

I love Stanley's playing too. The Mosaic is great. May I also suggest "Up at Minton's". Highly enjoyable stuff.

Count me in as a fan. I greatly enjoy his playing.

"Blue Spirits" and "Night of the Cookers" are two Freddie Hubbard albums that I have never heard before. Written reviews and discussion with others has given me the impression that these are not really up to par with Freddie's other Blue Note output. However, this board I trust most, and I'm sure most of you have heard these before. My question is....how are they?

How does this one compare for "A Time for the Soul" from last year? I wanted to buy this one, but if the new live set is received more positively, I'll spring for that one instead. I would get both, but I've never heard any of Winard's music before.

Dave Holland sells out everytime he comes to Chicago.

I like the disc very much as well. I've listened to it many times since its release, and I think it holds up as one of his best releases. Frisell adds alot to the music...almost "decorates" it in a way. This is one of the best new releases of the year so far.

Agreed. This one sounds real nice.

The second Heltah Skeltah album, back in 1998, when it was strictly hip hop. What a piece of garbage.

"Ruby My Dear" is my favorite ballad ever. Every time I hear it, the goosebumps come and the lump in my throat rises. While I have heard countless versions of this beautiful Monk tune, I think most can agree that the two definitive versions are the ones on "Monk's Music" and "Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane". The first time I heard the tune was on Monk's Music, and Hawk just seemed to be born to play it. He played with such power, that after that it was hard for me to listen to piano trio versions of the song. I just couldn't hear that song without imagining Hawk's beautiful phrases over the top. But recently, I picked up the K2 version of Monk and Trane, and I must say, Trane plays the hell out of that song. So beautiful and heartfelt, yet so different from Hawk. So I wonder, which version of this song do you all like more, or is there another that is even better?

McCoy Tyner & Bobby Hutcherson @ Jazz Bakery, LA
sal replied to The Mule's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Dr J. - Give Terrance Blanchard's "Bounce" or Greg Osby's "Inner Circle" a spin and I'm pretty sure you're opinion will change. Just remembered....he plays on Jason Moran's "Soundtrack to Human Motion" as well. He's one of my favorite "new" drummers. -

I really, really like this disc. Charnet Moffett and Eric Harland are perfect for McCoy and Bobby. The new songs are great. I highly recommend this one. I don't have the SACD version, but the regular version was recorded using DSD. It sounds sweet to me. -
Elvin Jones is my hero. He is the reason I came back to the drums after nearly 15 years away. He's the reason I chose jazz as my focus. Coltrane would never have been as great as he was without Elvin. He has given us so much great music over the years. He is the greatest drummer to ever walk on this earth. May God bless him.

Too bad they chose Corey Wilkes to play trumpet. Otherwise, I would be going to see them. I don't feel like hearing the same trumpet solo played 8 times in a night.
-
CONGRATULATIONS!
-
As long as Corey Wilkes is not on trumpet, I'm sure the album will be great.

Have you ever listened to Ellery Eskelin's music? Fantastic, innovative stuff that's alot of fun to listen to. Try his hatOLOGY albums "Kulak 29 & 30" and "Five Other Pieces (+2)". Yo Yo Ma's new CDs of Brazilian music are great as well.
-
Also, another wonderful aspect of this set is Max Roach's drumming. Some of the best I've heard by him. This is my favorite Mosaic. Anyone who does not have this set or the material contained within simply must purchase it. There is no option.
-
His albums in recent years have been very enjoyable. I look forward to getting this one. Thanks for the input, Dan.

On Monday, April 9th at 7PM, Ellery will perform with his trio of Andrea Parkins and Jim Black at the Chicago Cultural center....35 E. Washington. Should be a great show, and its free! Doesn't get any better than that. I'll be there.

How many of us can listen to music at work?
sal replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I've tried it, but I can't. Jazz is just too interesting. I start listening to what each musician is doing, then I start drifting off into another world, then I start tripping out.....needless to say, it leads to unproductive work days. I work in silence, then reward myself with jazz for the ride home. -
Thank you very much 7/4 and John B! I used your information to buy both titles. Man, this board is the best.

I am looking to purchase the following Anthony Braxton Hathut titles: Quartet (Dortmund) 1976 Quintet (Basel) 1977 If anyone has these for sale, or knows someplace where I can buy them online, please let me know. I've searched high and low, and simply can't find them. Thanks!

An honest apparaisal of Mosaic sets
sal replied to connoisseur series500's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I'm sorry that you didn't like the sound on your Duke Pearson set, conn500. I don't have the Pearson set, so I can't comment on that one in particular. However, I can honestly say that I've found the sound on Mosaic sets to be quite good for the most part. I have four Mosaic box sets and six Selects, and the only discs out of all that music that I would say does not have superior sound is the first disc of the Turrentine set and the first disc of the Moncur Select. Two discs out of what.....nearly fifty?? Not too bad. Its hard to do better than that buying single disc reissues or even box sets by other companies. Its unfortunate that your first Mosaic experience was a bad one. Hopefully sometime down the line you'll give them another chance and your opinion will become more positive. Best of luck to you! -
The early Sam Rivers Blue Notes. I never bought the Mosaic, so I'm waiting for these, hopefully as Conns.
