  1. Hang on; let me check my Maltz Guide...
  2. My ex and I went through the same thing a few years back. Some stray was in the neighborhood who was definitely down on his luck and getting kicked around by other cats in the area. We managed to corrall him and nurse him back to health, we thought, although for some reason his wounds, though not infected, weren't healing very fast. A few tests at the vet revealed why. Sometimes doing the right thing hurts, but it's still the right thing.
  3. I especially love his short stories! Have you checked out the mammoth collection The Masque of Manana (NESFA Press) which has all his significant short SF work, as far as I can tell? There's some stuff in there that ranks with anything by William Tenn, though with a different flavor of course. The novels are (for the most part) great too, with Mindswap my favorite and Dimension of Miracles not far behind. Looking back at Sheckley, it seems that he did the "Hitchhikers' Guide" schtick both first and better. No, I've just been combing the stores for paperbacks of his stuff. You know, I don't think I've ever read a novel of his, unless you count the expanded 10th Victim. Yeah, it's a different flavor, but he and Tenn are in a class above the rest. Great stuff!
  4. I had to learn to read early. Mom would only read one chapter a night from the latest Happy Hollisters book and said if I wanted to go faster I'd have to read it myself. It's amazing how "evil" then looks strangely like "brilliant motivation" now...
  5. One thing I'll never understand about this area... I just checked the coming week's forecast. On Saturday, the high is supposed to be 6 (-14 for you sensible areas, if I remember my conversions right!). The low Saturday night is supposed to be 6. How the heck do they pull that off??? Are they trying to tell me that it's going to be amazingly dark on Saturday?
  6. I've been on a Robert Sheckeley kick, reading books of his short stories. Damn, he could write 'em!
  7. My God! Did he run the auto companies as well?
  8. Contact my lawyer, baby; we'll sue his ass! Yeah, yeah, I know...comparing Deion to Chuck Bednarik is like comparing falling down a snowbank to winning the gold medal in the luge...
  9. I always fell asleep while listening to Brotzmann's Nipples. I'd set it up to repeat on the CD player and my ex would come home to find it blaring out with me passed out on the couch.
  10. Damn that Campbell's Soup!
  11. Damn pod people! Give us back our Gene Harris Fanatic!!
  12. And nothing beats a turduckenjay for tasty goodness at the holiday table!
  13. Beau Bridges Jeff Bridges Lloyd Bridges
  14. Which is worth getting, I might add!
  15. Yeah, I always get Camper Van Beethoven and Van Halen mixed up...
  16. Seriously, though; this is some weird shit. Treasury bonds acting like the old 'Christmas Club's of yore?
  17. Yeah, a phrase that's repeated over and over and over again and makes up most of the song...
  18. Chico Escuela Merkon Garrett Morris
  19. Okay, that didn't work out too well, but the tow truck didn't seem to have much trouble pulling my van out of the farmer's field. I must admit, my snow driving has been mostly theoretical, and I really hadn't considered what the options were when a car was coming straight at you in your lane. Idiot.
  20. Our first snow in the Grande Ronde valley began last night. The surrounding mountains have had their share already, but this is the first day I'll have to actually drive in it. What a joy for a California transplant...
  21. i'm going to leave that one alone and resist a retort!! Oh, go ahead; the cherry retorts are excellent!
  22. Reconstruction was ended by the compromise election of 1876. The Jim Crow laws began arising shortly afterwards but really hit their stride in the 1890s. And don't feel alone; at least through the midseventies such things weren't studied in the United States either...
