  1. The one that drives me up the wall is "If you think that, you've got another thing coming!" Everyone knows that it's "If you thing that..." Oops; lets try that again...
  2. Well, we certainly disagree on that one, Conn. I can't think of anyone I'd be less happy to see here. Not anyone. I agree that his posts are sometimes "amazingly articulate". If they make any sense at all, I'm amazed...
  3. Ah. My mistake; I should have realized that his amazing interpersonal skills would attract groupies... Well, I haven't been over there enough lately to know "who's who". Like I said, I'll try to get over there more often (although I don't know if I'm the sort of poster you're actually looking for! ), if they've already run off people like Muskrat Ramble, I don't know if I'll be there for long... In the spirit of openness, I should admit that it was Bombastic's posts that caused me to lose interest in the first place, so it's not like I'm disappointed that he's gone...
  4. Tell me about it! Yuchh...
  5. Bev, I've been checking the place out over the last few days, and I must admit that it's a tough sell when the place is patting itself on the back for getting rid of one childish poster while defending a drunken boor just because he happens to be a musician, but you're right. At it's best AAJ was a fine place, and Mike sure as hell deserves better than he's getting with all the work he's put into the place. I'll try to post sanely and carefully over there a bit more.
  6. I've always been annoyed by "sell-out" charges from fans of all sorts. Hell, if it was that easy, we'd all be rich!
  7. A day without coffee is like a day without sanity. I'll try it once in a while, but not on a regular basis!
  8. Of course not; you're imagining things...there's no smilie in Chuck's post! Peter, I wish you the best in this. Running a marathon has been a dream of mine for a couple of years, which is pretty silly for someone who really needs to drop 70 or 80 pounds before his knees could even take a little training. But I'll make it some day; lead the way!!
  9. Glad to see a results announcement, Jim! I must admit, I got caught up in the game during lunch, but had to get back to work right after Michigan threw the interception in the fourth quarter. Having never forgiven Ohio State for the existence of Woody Hayes, I didn't like that!
  10. I was embarrassed to admit it after my smart remark to Tod, but mine actually came a few hours later...
  11. Yeah, "me" is the person I know most likely to buy music for me as well! I'm currently dropping hints to myself about the HRS set, but if I forget and give me the J.J. Johnson set instead, that'll be cool. If on the other hand, I give me the Four Freshmen set, I won't speak to myself for a year!
  12. Holy Gato, Chris!!! That's some avatar!
  13. Yeah, once David Johannsen (by whatever silly name it was he was going by!) did that one, the plug should have been pulled!
  14. My fault, St. Vitus; I just rechecked...Gioia's actual statement is : "After leaving Blakey in 1961, Morgan recorded extensively as a leader for the Blue Note label, and achieved a major success with his 1963 staccato funk outing "The Sidewinder", which evenutally reached number twenty-five on the Billboard charts." It was sloppy reading on my part that turned "outing" into "single"; apologies, everyone.
  15. And strangely enough, I've purchased certain discs just because it does contain this tune!
  16. Well, ghost; you know that old saying: nothing in life is certain except debt and Texas. Hang on; that might not be quite right...
  17. Believe it or not, it was probably Stefan Harris who first made me notice the instrument. The vibes seemed so...refined and elegant in the hands of people like Milt Jackson (which sounds strange considering how most people seem to look at him as the "wild man" of the MJQ!). Lately I've gone on a Bobby Hutcherson tear, though, and I'm really loving his stuff...
  18. Thanks, Eric! AfricaBrass has been working overtime, hasn't he? Here's a larger version of mine so you can see the detail he snuck in....
  19. I'm kind of disappointed; it's not even internally consistent. Oh well...
  20. Man, what do they do, just walk over and drop it on your porch?
  21. I agree with the posts saying "it's not the song; it's what you bring to the song. On the other hand, when I read the thread title, Summertime immediately popped into my head...
  22. Uh, oh...quick; alert that website! Maybe he can add a footnote or something!
  23. Interesting article. I must admit, I'd like to see the article referred to along with it, but unless it was horribly misquoted, I doubt it would alter my interpretation. Strange how doing something because you feel it's the right thing to do rather than because daddy is watching indicates "cowardice of...moral convictions"...
  24. Dan, I got as far as Johnson picking Robert Kennedy as his running mate and started laughing uncontrollably. That would have been like Buchanan and Sharpton teaming up!
