  1. If they'd just given my man Phil Neikro a few more years...
  2. Wow. Chris, my wife listens to an oldies station regularly. Every monday is "Motown Monday", so I can't say they're ignoring this stuff. They play it on other days as well. They certainly don't play Cream and such, but hey; they're appealing to the singles crowd even at this late date. It's not like you're going to hear a lot of Led Zeppelin on these stations. I personally think her station (KFRC) is light on British Invasion stuff (very little Kinks, no Who, what are "Yardbirds"?), but they certainly play a lot of Stones. Sam Cooke, the Impressions, etc. (plus later faves I can dig like the O'Jays and the Chi-lites!) are played quite a bit. Are we just lucky??
  3. Hey, if lions are involved, I'm there!
  4. It's not just me! That has to be the trippiest show I have ever seen in my life! I swear, the first time I saw it played at the store, I thought it was aimed at acid users, and aimed quite well!
  5. The retired woman down the street asked my other half to feed her cats in the backyard while she was out of town, and after a couple of days, she was telling me about the cats. Talk about being blown away by a conversation! Here's how it went... She: The male is a shorthair named Satcho, or something like that... Me: Do you mean...nah, never mind; go ahead. She: ..and the female is a longhair named Ella. They're so cute! Me: You're kidding! The male's name is "Satchmo" then. She: Yeah, that's right! How did you know? Me: Uh...lucky guess...
  6. I know it's at AAJ; I have a, er...very DEEP ignore list there. Is there one here? It could certainly be useful.
  7. Can't remember the title; it was the album with Rolene. Anyone know if it was ever released on CD? I found a compilation with Rolene on it, but it wasn't even my favorite song on the thing if I remember right. I remember playing this and the second Police LP until my roommates threw me out....
  8. So 42 is the answer. What was the question?
  9. I remember a "reunion" of sorts with a gang of freinds I hadn't hung with in several years. We'd never really listened to the same things; they were "AC/DC, Def Leppard and Led Zeppelin" whereas I was more "Lene Lovich, Elvis Costello and Joe Jackson". My tastes had drifted to jazz, their's had remained the same (and probably always will). I put on Weather Report's Black Market and they were repelled by the strange shit. Suddenly, it seemed like strange shit to me, too. To this day, it sounds odd; I don't think it will ever sound as it did before that experience. It was like the tribe was ostracizing me for my heresey, and now the CD can only represent that experience for me. Weird...
  10. Brazil was inCREDible!!!
  11. Ah...just now listening to Swiss Movement and the ever topical "Compared to What"...
  12. I think it follows Vonnegut's idea of people seeking larger families, myself. If, as an example you're a Yankees fan, you have "family" almost everywhere that you have something in common with. At least you feel you do, anyway. But who knows...
  13. Hey, participating is an altogether different animal, noj! Believe it or not, at age 45, I just got a pair of inline skates. I haven't skated since I was six, so if I suddenly disappear for a few weeks, just assume I'm in traction...
  14. At last!!! Call Catesta, Dan, berigan, weizen and all the other righties! I finally get to be a conservative!!!!! I absolutely HATE,despise, and cannot stand music videos. What the heck? You don't Watch music, you *listen* to it! Christ, you kids... And I've told you before, stay the fuck off of my lawn!!!!
  15. Rooster Ties, you really should keep up with the local teams, at least. I think the coach's name is Hank Stram. I'm a "nonsports" guy myself. I was a football nut as a kid, but the game looks positively stupid if you quit playing. Baseball held me until the strike of '94, but lost me at that time. Hockey held on a little longer (probably because they weren't spoiled rich like the others for a while, and nobody pretends that a hockey player's opinion on current events is important!), but even that went away when the Sharks went to cable. The world conspired to wean me away from sports, and I'm glad they did. What a waste of time it was for me... On the other hand, I'm luckier than you guys; my wife has zero interest in sports. When watching the local news, we just mute the sports and find something to read...
  16. Here's what I think: kids today cuss worse than I ever did (and I was a sailor, fer cryin' out loud!), so who are we protecting. I agree with your intentions, Dan, but I'm ready to throw in the towel...
  17. I remember that particular song, Chris, from an '80s compilation series I used to have, but that's it.
  18. I remember him saying something around here about having to cut back on the posting, due to work if I remember right. Can't remember where the post would be, though...
  19. Hell, don't feel embarrassed about the Bangles; I had albums by the Go-Gos and Bananarama fer cryin' out loud. For some reason, whenever I listened to Bananarama, though, I had to follow it with The Velvet Underground & Nico...
  20. AH, the Plimsouls. One of the few still around in my vinyl; I still have that EP of A Million Miles Away, right next to my copy of the Dickies Stukas over Disneyland...
  21. Man, that one went WAY too low!
  22. Wow; you're talking about a musical period and style that almost fell out of my memory, guys! I remember Guadacanal Diary and Dream Syndicate, and most definitely the dBs; always thought that was a great band name...ah, memories (even fuzzy ones!) can be fun...
  23. Shoot...I've got the catalog right here...maybe....
  24. I probably shouldn't admit this on a jazz board, but given the right context, I have a severe weakness for "poppier" (in the "Nick Lowe" vein, not "Brittney Spears", of course!)
