  1. Berigan, I don't mean to be a shithead, but could we confine the politics to the politcal arena? Using avatars with UN slams, snake toungued Hillary, etc. is violating the spirit of the board as far as I'm concerned, and I'd appreciate it if you'd cool it. My apologies in advance if this offends...
  2. Uh...yeah, stop by; I'm in North Dakota...that address you mailed the CDs to in California was just a mail drop...
  3. I guess I don't qualify as "old school", as I sure didn't. I knew you were into the music, but I didn't know you played... :rsly: (Shit...what's the roboticon for "embarrassed"!)
  4. No shit?? You ain't yanking our collective chain? You're a musician??? Son of a....
  5. No chance of that! Having collected stamps and coins as a kid, I always expect the "want list" to shrink as I acquire more. I'm beginning to understand that jazz doesn't work that way. It seems like your want list doubles in size overnight if you don't buy any music. If you do buy some, then it triples...
  6. Yeah, Chris; definitely something to pass. VERRRRRY boring, predictable, sounds like it's aimed at older ladies. You know, the ones with that odd purple tint to their hair, hornrimmed glasses and poodles... By the way, it's about time you showed up!
  7. I'll definitely have to step up to the plate for the Weston set. He's at the head of my list of "Artists I like and want to hear more of, but haven't forked over the green for yet." (Yeah, I think the title is longer than the list!)
  8. Can I boycott McDonalds instead? I don't eat there anyway...
  9. Sorry, dude; just bumping your post as there's a couple of things I want when I can afford them...
  10. I'd love to add to this conversation, but I really shadn't...
  11. Neat program today so far... Tom Harrell Paradise Lee Morgan Search for the New Land Bobby Bland Two Steps from the Blues More to come, I'm sure; the wife's not home for another two hours!
  12. Excellent post, Jim! Naturally, when someone mentions the blues, I hear more than just Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters. I mean hell, if Jimmie Rodgers, Bill Monroe and Hank Williams weren't singing blues, then I'm in the wrong spot in this conversation. The influence of blues is what makes American music American. And while Hip Hop and such may not have jack shit to do with the 12 bar blues format, to say they aren't influenced by the blues and the American music tradition leaves me puzzled...
  13. I recently picked up a stack of Concords and such, you know, bargain hunting. Mostly good stuff, but apparently Pete Escovedo is NOT who I thought he was...
  14. Well, I don't know if everyone knew, or just missed him! Mingus is well represented on my shelves, but you're right to recommend him; I'd forgotten about some of his more adventurous stuff, which I've been exposed to and like (I particularly remember the song Eclispse. While the soulful stuff is well represented on my shelves, this is certainly an artist I should explore more.
  15. Shoot. This was a mistake. I didn't want to read this thread until I ordered the disc because I didn't want to build up the anticipation. Now I realize I shouldn't have read it until I received the disc. This is going to be a hell of a long "3-4 days" until delivery!
  16. When you consider the impact of the blues on American music in general, I find it hard to believe that anyone who plays almost anything in this country and understands how music developed can downplay the blues.
  17. That used to be my routine. I always felt fresh and rested. I really do think that not everyone's internal clock is the same, and that you're pretty much stuck with what you have.
  18. Jim, Alex said that the judges had found several references to Parker as "Birdman", so it wasn't a "trick result" or whatever... I must admit, I've never seen any such references. Makes me wonder what would happen if she'd answered "yardbird". Probably throw that one out!
  19. ...and to derail it right back, I LOVE that album you're currently featuring in avatar-land!
  20. Speaking as an incurable Jeapordy addict, I was disappointed and apalled when the judges gave her credit for that. On the other hand, seeing clues involving Parker and Cannonball Adderly on my favorite show really gave me a rush!
  21. Well, since the "acid jazz" hype has "left the building", so to speak, I wouldn't hold my breath...
  22. I have to give it up to Dan myself. I picked up the Blue Hour discs he mentions in a trade, and I have to admit, this is good stuff!
  23. Give it up, catesta! To completely butcher Ellington, it won't make me pounce, it it ain't got that bounce...
  24. Yeah, Alexander; not believing voids the warrantee!
  25. Gasp! I'm shocked!! You sound more like a music lover than a businessman; you'll never get anywhere with an attitude like that! Maybe you're right. Perhaps a big box set isn't quite the way to "wet my feet". Sigh... By the way, all kidding aside; I'm impressed...
