Picked up the Rollini last week. Great music, fine remastering. Am I really posting this? Let's not forget the Retrieval label, too! My current "favorite" label, especially as their back catalog's now being reissued.

Hi guys -- thanks for the good wishes! I'm in Los Angeles right now. I've wanted to post on the O (while at home), but after the upgrade, I was never able to access the forums -- maybe because I'm a Mac user on OS9? (Thought perhaps I'd been banned.) Any suggestions? I was wondering if those in-the-know here could recommend some superlative and/or favorite recordings of Anton Webern's and Alban Berg's music. I'm particularly interested in string quartet recordings. (I have the Emerson String Quartet's disc of Webern String Works, but, at least right now, it leaves me cold.) Thanks for the recommendations!

He is, after all, a member of this board. Time for a thread discussing this multi-instrumentalist. About all I know is that he was politically active, and died in 1983. I'm sure others here can fill in the rest of the gaps. What's his story? And did he lead any other sessions beside these? What's your favorite?

Dig. (It does stand on its own.) The more modern connections — well, they probably are something of a stretch, but I've been listening to music in such a way recently (Free America titles ... then Erskine Hawkins ... then BYG titles ... then Chick Webb ... then ESP titles ... then Benny Moten) that the connections are making sense (maybe more than they should) to my brain. I'm hearing the "jazz continuum" ... !

I generally don't go in for best-of's or compilations ... but this one on RCA/Bluebird is very tasty. I'm sure there are other Erskine Hawkins admirers here. Strange (sort of) — while listening to it, some of the playing didn't sound all that out of line to me from, say, the Art Ensemble of Chicago (namely Lester Bowie) or even some of the Ayler Bro.'s work. A good one to put on after this disc is Chick Webb's Spinnin' the Webb. In fact, I CD-R'ed them together. 79:15 of bliss.

You did great! Agreed. Now the challenge is — since the coupon can be used more than once — to "refrain" (yeah, right) from buying another $30 batch. If you're going the RVG route (at $8.28 a pop with free shipping over $25, why not), I'd recommend: • any of the Bud Powell RVGs • the Miles Davis RVGs • the Jay Jay Johnson RVGs • the Clifford Brown RVGs Rudy's remastering work of Doug Hawkins' recordings is his best (in my opinion). Mostly, have fun exploring!

Are there any native Polish speakers here? I'd be interested in reading a phonetic spelling of some of these guys names. I think (from the incredibly little Polish I've been exposed to) that the alto player in question pronounces his name as such: ZIG-BIN-YOO NAM-IZ-WOW-SKI Didn't he sometimes (seriously) go by Ziggy?

Tangent: Yesterday, I was at a café with my wife. We were leisurely drinking coffee, writing some letters, and reading the paper while it rained and rained outside. In walks this very mod-looking, Betty Paige type college girl, replete with the proper tattoos — nothing too unusual for a college town (especially here). I noticed on her shoulder bag a button. It read: READING IS SEXY. First time I'd ever seen anything like that. Made me (quietly) laugh. (OK, back to Mosaics ... )

Agreed. I've e-mailed Cuscuna twice about this very Mosaic Select (I think you gave me the idea, David). He said he'd love to (— though he made no mention about potential licensing troubles) ... but maybe now with the America title out ... chances are less likely? I can't get too greedy. At least we have what we have so far ...

Thoroughly enjoyable. I was afraid of that. The one place in town (brick-and-mortar) that carried hat titles just went under.
