  1. FYI: The sale is advertised on their Facebook page, which can be viewed by anyone, including non-Facebook users.
  2. Hi, If no one has beaten me to it, I'd like to take this off your hands. Thanks! Aaron Sorry, I meant for that to be a PM.
  3. I've taken advantage of this sale for the past two years and bought at least 2 dozen titles. Only the previously mentioned two titles were CD-R's, but that is 2 too many. You're probably safe with recent releases and less popular (as these things go) titles, but it is a gamble. I may order yet, but only with a request to not send any CD-R's, and plenty of alternate titles. Still, the disappointment that comes with opening a disc and seeing that it is a CD-R is causing hesitation. BTW, a few months ago, I bought several Victo titles and one (William Parker's "For Percy Heath") was a green CD-R. Fortunately, the good people at Squidco allowed me to return it. Aaron
  4. They came with tray cards and booklets. Proper? That's debatable. They appear to be substandard reprints on substandard paper (compared to non-CD-R releases). Aaron
  5. Even with shipping to the US, it still works out to around $5 per disc. The bigger issue is that last year, two of the titles I ordered (Marilyn Crispell Trio "Live In Zurich" and Anthony Braxton "Solo (Koln) 1978") were CD-R copies. I emailed Leo Feigin directly about this. He appeared baffled as to why I would object to CD-Rs. I responded with a long email, including a link to a thread on this site. He thanked me for enlightening him on the subject and made some sort of vow to not knowingly sell CD-Rs in the future. The problem is that that the stream is now polluted. If I order again this year there will be a request included to not send any CD-Rs. They seem easy to identify (clear plastic jewel cases, no black plastic or digi-packs), but who knows. Getting a CD-R from any label is sort of a kiss-of-death. Aaron
  6. I just received both Armstrong sets. The All-Stars set (#257) was on the bottom of the package and has a large gash in the box. The other set is fine. Sucks. I just emailed about any possibility of a replacement. It's already on Last Chance, though, so I'm feeling queasy.
  7. It's from Emanem, so I'll be getting it. Can't wait! From their website: Four sessions of music involving different degrees of free improvisation - all featuring STEVE LACY and KENT CARTER. (1) DISPOSABILITY, the 1965 trio record with ALDO ROMANO which features versions of jazz standards and originals as well as some free improvisation. Originally issued in 1966 as Vik 200, this is the first reissue without distorted cymbal "tap dancer" noise. (2) SORTIE, the 1966 quartet record with ENRICO RAVA added, based on free improvisation. Originally issued in 1966 as GTA 1002, this is the first complete reissue, and the first CD reissue with correct track titles. (3) The previously unissued 1967 "FREE FALL" FILM CUES performed by a quintet with RAVA, KARL BERGER, & PAUL MOTIAN. Improvisation moulded to fit with mainly short visual film sequences. (4) Finally, two previously unissued 1972 quintet pieces with STEVE POTTS (alto saxophone), IRENE AEBI (cello) and NOEL McGHIE (drums). The best recorded version of the Lacy original The Rush, and a partially controlled improvisation called The Thing. 124 minutes. Available August
  8. Just got my ticket. Hearing David Murray with the Grateful Dead in 1993 is basically what started my interest in jazz.
  9. Using a similar criteria would restrict me to only buying releases on the Emanem label.
  10. Just in case anyone isn't aware, the latest update to Jessica Williams' website has some rather dire news, financially speaking. It's been ongoing, due to health issues, but it seems to have reached a critical point. http://www.jessicawilliams.com/ It seems that despite her optimism about a return to performing, things haven't been happening or just aren't possible. As someone who has been listening to her albums lately and periodically checking her website, I'm going to pull the trigger on this. Just spreading the word... Aaron

  17. Mosaic is currently selling this release from Dot Time Records. I added it to my order with the Nelson set during the recent small sale. This a bootleg recording, complete with muffled sound, booming bass, fluctuating vocals, and dropouts. The packaging is skimpy, to put it generously. Liner notes are credited to Scott Wenzel, but you have to download them. The inside cover contains just a summary. The performance is interesting, but I have a hard time believing this is a legitimate release. If so, it's unfortunate. I'd avoid this release and this label. It can't be a good sign that Mosaic is selling this sort of stuff. Aaron
  18. The Roach set is so disappointing. I've been wanting his Soul Note releases for so long, but to have only a 6 disc set with three of them appearing in other sets? Ugh. And why stick a clearly attributed Muhal disc in the Mitchell set? Seriously.
  19. Thanks for the heads up. I just grabbed the Weston. It's a big catch for me as I just saw him in San Antonio recently and snatched up his Riverside recordings (actual CDs, not CD-Rs!). Been wanting this set since it disappeared prematurely from the Mosaic website.
  20. I bought Gil Evans & Ten (OJC) this past Friday...damn CD-R. Lesson learned: no more OJCs unless they're used and I can see them. Of course, I tweeted this out, aimed at Concord and OJC. Needless to say, they won't be re-tweeting it. Same thing happened with a disc from Candid ("Smoke" by Jaki Byard) and one from VSOP ("Live At Dana Point 1957" by Warne Marsh). I gave up on those labels too. Now it's used only. It's one thing if you know what you're getting (Satchmo at the National Press Club, for example, only available as a CD-R or digitally) but to not have it specified should be a crime.
