I finished reading this and the problem with the book is that although you learn a lot about the Chicago newspaper business, the literary movements at the time, Hollywood and his activism during WW II on behalf of the Jews of Europe and Israel, you don’t learn enough about Hecht. It’s more about them than Hecht himself.

Of course you can if you wish. I again bring up tennis where the men have all the qualities you describe but the women’s game is quite exciting. The women’s draw in the French Open was actually more interesting than the men’s draw. At the end of the day, if you don’t like it, nothing I can say will change your mind so I won’t try.

I don’t think you should or can compare them. When I watch women’s tennis, I’m not thinking that way. I just enjoy it. Same with the WWC.

Why?

GS look to be toast. If they lose, wonder whether Durant will stay. There is talk that he might be headed to the Nets, rather than the Knicks.

Anybody planning to watch the Women's World Cup? I'm watching Germany China and the Germans look strong although the Chinese defend well and could be dangerous on the counter.

Disappointing loss but not unexpected when you’re down two key players.

Yes, I remember that scene now. A weird one. Matthau gives off that deadpan attitude but you know there’s more going on in his head. Yes, you’re correct. He was very good in that movie, which is a fine, fine movie. William Schallert also has a memorable minor role, setting up Matthau for some good dialogue.

Great movie. I have seen it many times but not in the last few years. I wouldn't swear to this but this is the first movie where I think Matthau began the transition to more dramatic, less comedic roles.

Dumb doesn’t seem the right adjective. Tragic comes to mind. Sometimes, domestic violence can emanate from something very trivial and escalate out of control. A real tragedy.

The bullpen is atrocious. They turned two victories into losses on the just completed disastrous road trip. The GM did a horrendous job in building it. Although the person in the video is extreme, we are all frustrated with the pen.

Not a memorable match. Too bad the title couldn’t have stayed in Spain but that’s another story.
