  1. I must have missed that fine place in my travels across the state, such as it is.
  2. Sympathies Jeff. We're going through the same thing with my mom right now, who lives with us. Her independence is key to her. That is being lost and I understand her plight. It's no fun to get old, that's for damn sure.
  3. Now, see, if you were a genuine psychopath, you'd have a perfectly linear explanation that tied everything together nice and neat, no ambiguity, everything resolved in advance, and the only time your head would explode would be when a bullet went through it. Fraud! :g He must be a psychopath -- he's a moderator!
  4. You make a good point about the number of writers whose politics, shall we say, weren't conventional at the time. Comment withdrawn "As a jewish atheist, isn't that a contradiction in terms? Well, then again, maybe not
  5. Unless there are any other writers on here, god, I hope so since he depends on writing to earn his daily bread
  6. Yes, it just reinforces them. Truer words were never spoken. And, yes, we all like a football game because of its legalized mayhem. However, the detritus it leaves behind are real people, whose lives have been shattered by the violence. I"m always reminded me of the George Carlin bit about the differences between football and baseball.
  7. Would that include the likes of Adolf Hitler or Julius Streicher? This thread is developing a certain troubling bent, particularly when we start mentioning the likes of Roy Campbell. Are we going to start talking about the Protocol of the Elders of Zion next?
  8. Something like maybe he would think about returning to the Cavs in a couple of years. Must have given Heat management and fans pause. In another vein, all this attention has not really done Jeremy Lin any good: Lin's Heroics Have Turned Him Into a Marked Man
  9. After reading the Times' coverage the last few days, this seems to be a prevalent practice in the NFL although one done more by the players themselves than team management.
  10. I envy you that in a way. Sure it gets old hat after awhile but you sure are going to some different places. Trust me, nothing's happening in Chester, NJ
  11. I don't know about Interesting but different, yes. As to whether she would be happy about its turn, that would be for her to say.
  12. Hans, Are you looking for the TOCJ version. I have that but would need to check when it's from.
  13. We haven't heard from Spangalang for awhile. Wonder what she thinks on the direction that this thread has taken.
  14. This is obviously none of my business but I'm curious as to what you're doing in Azerbaijan. Business? If you tell to mind my beeswax, no issue there
  15. Bruce is right on point. He may be the best player in the game but until he wins a title he's not in the conversation. If he doesn't do it this year, it will never happen. Until the "decision" he was liked. Since then he's held in contempt and teams play (or try to) harder against the Heat. His return to the Cavs comment only makes you shake your head. Great talent but light's on and nobody's home.
  16. Well put by FOB. Any book, no matter how good, need an editor and/or reads by colleagues in the field.
  17. Joel, Really sorry to hear about a good friend. Can't put it better than others have. My best to his family and you. Brad
  18. Knicks came up short today. Lin a non factor mostly. In the second half they were maddening and the second team kept them in the game. Notwithstanding they had the lead with 18 secs to go to but couldn't stop Pierce who torched them. They have difficulty getting over 500. Not the way to start off across trip that includes Mavs and Spurs.
  19. As much as you want to defend him, the guy seems to have games where his judgment is at question. There is no getting around that. He has character flaws that in my view will prevent him from winning a title. The author of "The Whore of Akron: One Man's Search for the Soul of LeBron James", Scott Raab, was on WFAN yesterday discussing his book and he thinks there are some personality conflicts between him and Wade and that he's playing scared at times. To not acknowledge there are some problems there is pollyannish.
  20. As Joel mentioned no idea why after all these years we're still discussing, other than some like to breast beat and show they were right. So far from what has been posted in the last day I see one error that shouldn't have been made (but pretty insignificant otherwise) and one made in poor judgment. On the assumption that there were a few of those, does that invalidate the whole series. What if the series got a few people interested in jazz, then the series was worth it, warts and all.
  21. That''s obviously very bad. However, do we know that was done intentionally or was it an accident. Moreover, although maybe the Ken Burns enterprise is blameworthy, do we know that Ken Burns the person said something like "we know this is wrong but let's do it anyway." Notwithstanding, are we saying because of that one mistake, the whole series is worthless. That would be exaggeration.
  22. Anyone associated with it should be fired and/or suspended from football.
  23. The McCourt matter needs to be distinguished from a player matter because the latter is subject to the CBA so different rules apply.
