WKCR needs to raise about $193,000 to get through this current credit crunch. Through this morning, they've raised about $142,000 so they're still about $50,000 short. Several people who pledged already have called in and increased their pledge. I just did that. They need to raise this money by January 31. Today is January 28. If they don't raise this money, there is a very real possibility that one of the oldest jazz stations in the world may disappear. In April, they're planning to have a two week Billie Holliday festival. That's two weeks around the clock of nothing but Billie. But if they don't raise the money, you can forget about that. If you can afford the funds, please call 212 851 2699 and pledge what you can. You can also pledge through their website, WKCR.

I'm not sure what that's supposed to mean. When you look at anybody's opinion from their perch, of course it's understandable. However, does that make it right? This is a station that serves the community not just at Columbia and with more than just jazz (although jazz is predominant). To have another college station when WKCR is more than that hardly makes sense. You can get those anywhere. Plus, most of these kids will be moving on in a few years. This station has been around a long time and hopefully will be long after I'm gone from this earth.

Taking off on what Allen said how about "Is She Blue?" It might be intriguing enough to get people interested.

yes, Chuck is correct. All those High Note cds and probably the Moon (since it's probably a rip off of the Don Byas cd) were recorded by him. He also, among others, recorded some of the songs that appeared on Charlie Christian Jazz Immortal and Dizzy Gillespie 1941 cd, originally issued on Esoteric and later re-issued by Fantasy. If I'm not mistaken other Esoteric records had Jerry Newman's material on it.

I can just feel the love here Forgot about The Night of the Cookers. That's definitely in the top 5, maybe the top one. Not too far behind is Byrd's Slow Drag. Good awful. Got rid of that sick puppy.

Everybody's station is important but I think WCKR, as noted above, is a special station and an important one in jazz history. They were, according to the station, playing Monk way back in 1941. And their non-jazz broadcasting is good too. Their annual Bach festival at the end of each year is a delight. I think this station needs our extra support because there's few out there like it. Loss of this station will diminish us all.

You must be surely be kidding but not for nothing Dexter called Go a "classic." While I know not everybody loves this record as much as his other BNs, to consider Go in the category of worst albums is mind boggling to say the least.

I'm around the 2000 range including lps. I'd like to know how someone with 10,000 gets to listen to all they have. I have that problem with what I have. Mind you, I've only been collecting 5-6 years.

If you're looking for the full session with Bird and Dizzy, it's on the Complete Dial and Savoy. This is a seminal session in bop history because by Red recording with them, it gave them legitimacy in the mind of the public that they did not otherwise have. Another recommended session on Savoy is the Red Norvo Trio with Tal Farlow and Charles Mingus.

Even some of the takes on the Lost Sessions probably would have been better staying "lost". Don't ask me which ones, I just remember thinking that this wasn't real primo material.

Agreed and uncalled for. I didn't want this to degenerate into a squabble about Chris or Schaap since this station provides a valuable function for jazz listeners. I think instead we should focus on what would happen if this station were not around anymore so if you can contribute please call in or pledge on the internet site.

So are you guys saying that if it's non-Tube, leave it on. I can't remember the name of my amp but my cd player is a Rotel. But it's ok to leave on?

Late, The first cd posted by Lon is the one doubleM is referring to. There also Thelonious Monk, The Early Thelonious Monk, on Moon Records (MCD 086-2), which has 1941 Monk on it. I don't know how easy that is to get anymore.

I don't think that's correct although I can't point to anything right now. I believe many others do in the interest of having a true and correct discography.

WKCR, 89.9 FM in New York and WKCR on the web, which broadcasts principally jazz is in financial trouble and is trying to raise money through a pledge-a-thon. They are approximately $700,000 in debt, principally due to having replace equipment destroyed on 9/11. WKCR has been broadcasting jazz since 1941 and there is a real possibility that unless they raise sufficient funds to retire some of this debt, it will be the end of jazz programming. WKCR holds several birthday broadcasts where they broadcast a person's music for 24 hours straight. The next one is this Sunday for Roy Eldridge. They also have 70 minutes daily just devoted to Charlie Parker as well as programming from 6 am to 930 am (including the Bird show), 12 pm to 3 pm and 6pm to 9pm daily as well as after midnight. They also have public programming and are required to broadcast Columbia sports but the main focus is jazz. I doubt that I'd be the jazz fan today I am it weren't for this station. Where else can you get so much daily attention on Charlie Parker? I know that many of you complain about Phil Schapp but where else can you get that much time every day on Bird, not to mention the other jazz programming they have throughout the weekdays and the weekends. If you can, please pledge at WKCR. Losing this station as a jazz resource would be a big loss for jazz.
