  1. Hiroshi doesn't charge $30 for a mini lp. That's why we generally order from him. Also, as a loyal customer, he will go out of his way to find some things that are generally OOP. I don't normally buy that many Venuses but if I'm putting in an order for other material, I might add in a Venus. However, a lot of the Venuses I've purchased I found locally for $20. The guy just happened to have them.
  2. yes, definitely a big
  3. I don't know how many called in vs. internet but I believe if you called in, you were to do it by credit card which is how I did it. The overall debt is apparently $700,000 so they will have to do this again unless maybe they're getting some matiching funds from somewhere else.
  4. I'm partial to the Eddie Higgins cds. I don't have a lot of the others but the EH's are quite nice. I have the most recent Harold Mabern. It's ok but not as good as the EH's.
  5. I haven't taken the plunge on this one yet but your rec. is all that I need!
  6. Since we're into mentioning a bunch of labels, how about Xanadu? They put out some great stuff some of it still not in cd. I was listening to the Frank Butler lp this morning and while not a great date by any means it's a very nice and it would be nice to see this on cd.
  7. Doubly correct. I missed this one but without the book, forget it. That's what a Mosaic, a Mosaic. I'd rather pay for the whole thing.
  8. What the hell, as Ernie Banks might have said, let's get two!
  9. Folks, there is only a couple of days before WCKR may be pulled off the air. If you can please pledge. The number is 212-851-2699 and the website is WKCR. Sorry to be repetitious about this, but this is very important to the future of jazz.
  10. I think his thread got trashed because the music from both labels has been great. There have been some threads about why BN was better but Chris who worked for Prestige has thrown water on it. There was great music coming out from everywhere and I probably have almost as much of the Fantasy labels (Prestige, Riverside, Contemporary, New Jazz) as I do of Blue Note.
  11. Well, this will be the first time that I listen to them so it could be awhole another galaxy!
  12. Don't think we need it. Next thing people will look for hard bop, swing, bop, traditional, etc.
  13. I've already got Queen of the Organ and Crazy Baby so that reduces my output right there
  14. Open House Plain Talk. However, I don't agree that he never made a bad record for BN. I can't stomach the Smalls Paradise records. I've listened several times but don't care for 'em.
  15. My first Mosaic purchase was in the late 90s, the Mobley set, still one of my favorites.
  16. Yes, unless it's due to death or banning, I don't see how you can do it.
  17. I believe it has but awhile ago. See this thread for some discussion.
  18. This won't be even close man. No T.O. or a very limited one. They lost their tight end who scored 2 TDs last week. This will probably be ugly. I heard the spread is 6.5 points. That's way too generous.
  19. WKCR needs to raise about $193,000 to get through this current credit crunch. Through this morning, they've raised about $142,000 so they're still about $50,000 short. Several people who pledged already have called in and increased their pledge. I just did that. They need to raise this money by January 31. Today is January 28. If they don't raise this money, there is a very real possibility that one of the oldest jazz stations in the world may disappear. In April, they're planning to have a two week Billie Holliday festival. That's two weeks around the clock of nothing but Billie. But if they don't raise the money, you can forget about that. If you can afford the funds, please call 212 851 2699 and pledge what you can. You can also pledge through their website, WKCR.
  20. I'm not sure what that's supposed to mean. When you look at anybody's opinion from their perch, of course it's understandable. However, does that make it right? This is a station that serves the community not just at Columbia and with more than just jazz (although jazz is predominant). To have another college station when WKCR is more than that hardly makes sense. You can get those anywhere. Plus, most of these kids will be moving on in a few years. This station has been around a long time and hopefully will be long after I'm gone from this earth.
  21. Taking off on what Allen said how about "Is She Blue?" It might be intriguing enough to get people interested.
  22. I never had any brothers but I do have a sister and as for being white, I am wearing a blue shirt and dark coruduroys today
  23. yes, Chuck is correct. All those High Note cds and probably the Moon (since it's probably a rip off of the Don Byas cd) were recorded by him. He also, among others, recorded some of the songs that appeared on Charlie Christian Jazz Immortal and Dizzy Gillespie 1941 cd, originally issued on Esoteric and later re-issued by Fantasy. If I'm not mistaken other Esoteric records had Jerry Newman's material on it.
  24. I can just feel the love here Forgot about The Night of the Cookers. That's definitely in the top 5, maybe the top one. Not too far behind is Byrd's Slow Drag. Good awful. Got rid of that sick puppy.
