Couldn't we compromise and have it in the middle?
-
Ok, I admit it. I'm really both Jim Sangrey and Chuck Nessa
-
Daniel, I was just observing about people who join but then never post, not even once. You're in the clear
-
This strikes me as odd but we have 206 members who have never posted, not even once. Yes, that's correct, they joined but have never posted. I can understand that over time, you may get involved with other things and not have enough time to visit the Board but not posting once? It's unusual, to say the least.

I asked my wife for the Morgenstern, new Shelock Holmes collection and Le Carre's Tinker, Taylor DVD (I've always loved LeCarre and wanted this one for years). Actually no CDs this year. I've gotten enough, thank you (for now anyway). World peace would be nice. How many more must die and not see another Christmas?

Actually, it's a very good question which I don't have an answer for. It would be great if they were more available here. The only way I found out about the new Harold Mabern cd, for example, was that Harold mentioned it when I was talking to him after a recent gig here in Jersey. Frankly, the only way to keep up with what Venus is doing is to do a search on sites like HMV.

Ah, with that post, now I understand why you need an external hard drive. If syncing is going on, it will mess up what you have on the ipod. Thanks John.
-
Saw that too. I liked his comment about South of the Border: Nothing complicated but I like it. You don't necessarily have to do anything new or novel for it to be good and a classic.
-
That makes sense. Any recs on an an external?
-
Do you mean that the constant burning will or could eventually wear out the burner? As far as memory goes, once you've transferred it to the ipod, why not get rid it of it from itunes since we already have the cds.

I live in the New York area so the two stations we have are WKCR (www.wkcr.org) and WBGO (www.wbgo.org). I'm grateful to have them both but WKCR is more professional. They also have the birthday broadcasts. You'll get a wider variety, including new groups and songs from WBGO but they play more straight ahead which is their motto. Through iTunes there are also some stations I like WKJZ and North Carolina State University jazz station.

John, Thank you for the great post. Now I undestand why you might need an external hard drive. My computer is newer (early 2004) so I should be ok with the USB port. Awhile ago I had stored a bunch of cds on my computer at work through real player but they had to reinstall the hard drive at one point so I lost everything. Since it turned out that this was against company policy, it was no big deal but now I can bring the ipod to work with a lot more capacity to say the least. Can't wait for the morning.

Peace to all. May the world have it one day.

Madness is more like it. He lets Beltre get away and Finley. Then he nixes that deal. If he didn't, he would have been run out of town. It looks like the Yanks are on a bit of a losing streak. Not sure Pavano is that great a signing or Wright. It will make things interesting for sure. Not sure what my stupid team (Mets) are doing, trying to sign the big Cat. They're supposed to be making a big pitch for Beltran. I think the guy will be a bit of a bust. Heck, he only hit .268 during the regular season. He just got hot at the right time.

I just happened on this thread and read evey last post. I'm getting a 40 gig iPod tomorrow and am pretty excited although I haven't loaded anything yet on iTunes. Some people mentioned about getting an external hard drive. Do I need that to transfer songs to the iPod. Or is the external for the iPod itself, not my computer. What is this firewire thing. I assume that's something extra I have to purchase. I'm sort of Bertrand when it comes to new things. Excited, but a little nervous . The very thing I'll probably load are the Mobley Mosaic and Dexter BN box.

I never thought about that but I see Jim's point although I don't agree with it. The varitone just ruins the sound. One lp of Sonny's that I really love is at the DJ Lounge. That recording is just not going to grab me the way it does if he had used the varitone.

Actually it's not just organ trios that are neglected but soul jazz in general. No Lockjaw among the required listening or Shirley Scott or Stanley T? That's not good. How about some European jazz of the 60s on? However, aside from that I envy the addict's friend.

I've tried to put these tests out of my mind but as a veteran of them as we all are, I recommend a course. When I had to take the bar exam, half of it is what is called the Multistate which is a multiple choice (guess) kind of test, just like the SATs. I took a course and I doubt I would have passed the bar without it.

Ron, I would recommend trying Hiroshi Tanno at hiroshi@earlyrecords.com He's fast and cheap. That's who I purchase all my Japanese stuff from.

I love a lot of those Venus releases. I just ordered the new Harold Mabern on Venus. All the Eddie Higgins' are recommended.
-
The one Roulette Basie I hesitated getting this year was Basie and Friends, seemed more like one of these all star things with a lot of non jazz people. Anybody get that?

You might want to check out this AOTW Discussion. There's some in there about the Vanguard but more just a feeling for Pepper that might help you. I, myself, don't have it but would like to get it.

Hope you weren't referring to me . I was just quoting what the writer said, although I was obviously using his writing to embellish my dislike for the thing. I never heard Eddie Harris use but have heard Sonny use it (on cd) and IMHO it ruins his beautiful sound. Sonny should sound like when he played with Jug, on the Roost recordings or late on the Tune Up/Constellation cd. That is beautiful music. To me, the varitone just ruins and destroys his beautiful sound. I agree with your statement that "the personality of a sax player is partly his sound, but also his choice of notes, his phrasing and rhythmic conception" but not with the statement that "this is not affected by the Varitone - that is why you still recognize them in spite of the Varitone" because what comes out of the horn ruins what goes in. However, we'll probably never agree on this attachment. I don't want to use the "d" word

I remember this being discussed a long time ago maybe so long ago that it was at the BNBB. Anyway, I love these discs. Haven't listened to it in a while but really remembered loving Trummy and Barney especially.
-
Tony, Any leads on where to get this one? I've tried about 8 sites. No luck. If not, I might give one of his more recent recordings a try.
