  1. Do you mean this one, https://www.allmusic.com/album/fred-neil-mw0000345176
  2. I discovered him recently — can’t remember how exactly — and just purchased this. I’ve also picked up Folksong 65, on which he plays, also an Elektra release but have not gotten to that yet.
  3. Wonder if that was a call out of the blue or pre-arranged.
  4. Fred Neil Bleecker & McDougal. Reissued by Run Out Groove.
  5. QuarantineChat Brings Back Spontaneity (and Distraction) If you’re feeling isolated and/or alone, Quarantine Chat may be a perfect solution. “Phone calls with strangers can reintroduce random connections into our locked-down lives, and be a balm for loneliness and grief.”
  6. As Joe mentioned the book has nothing in common with the Bogart movie. However, I can’t think of Harry Morgan without thinking of Bogie. Without ruining the plot in case you want to read it, Hemingway tries to paint a picture of people in the Depression trying to get by. His style of writing tries to reflect that hard scrabble life. Towards the last third of the book he introduces the “haves” and his writing writing reflects characters you see in those 1930s or 1940s high society movies. He also throws in a few Cubans attempting to revolt against Baptista. It’s a bit of a hodge pudge and I’m not sure it all completely works. Not my favorite Hemingway but worth a read.
  7. I don’t know if this goes here or the Film Corner but I was just browsing HBO Max, the new streaming service, and they have a special section from TCM. There are some fantastic films in there, especially foreign films, lots of them. In addition, they have a section that has all the films from Studio Ghibli, the Japanese animation maker. This is the first time their films have been available digitally. You might recognize My Friend Totoro. In the middle to late 90s when my son was a toddler, we watched it countless times. I can’t wait to see it again. As if on demand, here’s an article in Rolling Stone that just came out, 50 Classic Movies to Watch on HBO Max
  8. We were definitely right. The cost to Vietnam and the US was incalculable. The naive belief that we all had that the Government doesn’t lie to us was ripped to shreds. By the way, Spike Lee has made a movie about four Black veterans returning to Vietnam that looks it will be good. It airs on Netflix on June 12.
  9. Perhaps. I’m just not a big fan of the approach. The only LOA volumes I have are Lincoln’s speeches and Douglasses writings. The approach also suffers from the same problem that some have complained about with Mosaic: you never listen to all the music and some prefer the individual dates. I just looked at my copy of The Sun Also Rises and it’s falling apart (1970 printing) so I will probably upgrade if Penguin comes out with their version
  10. I can’t say the LOA volume holds any significant interest for me as their MO seems to try to bring an author’s entire work for a selected period under one cover. That approach has never appealed to me. I’m sure Penguin Classics will bring out The Sun Also Rises when it falls into the PD; I tend to like their approach because they reprint a book with an introductory essay by an expert on the author. Although I read the book many years ago and still have the original Scribners version, I may be tempted by a Penguin Classics version.
  11. So, are they shipping next week
  12. Normally I’d second an Emily Remler Mosaic but she only had seven albums as a leader so I don’t know if there’s enough material there. Moreover, would Concord be interested in licensing the rights to another company?
  13. According to the following article in the Washington Post, that doesn’t seem likely. Coronavirus may never go away, even with a vaccine
  14. An article in the New Yorker discussing documentary films made by the Blackwood brothers, including the above film about Monk. What to Stream: Rediscovering the Blackwood Brothers, a Pair of Great Documentarians of New York City Life
  15. I received an email about the shipping delays involving the Japanese post office. Essentially, all packages which shipped before April 23th will be delivered but right now most packages which shipped after April 3rd have been held up by Japan Post and are still in Japan; they are stuck with a huge amount of packages because flights to the US have been reduced and canceled. It will now take 2-4 months for packages to get to their final destination.
  16. The season is looking more doubtful after owners submitted a revised proposal that penalizes the higher paid players. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/29224973/sources-mlb-proposal-includes-pay-cuts-highest-paid-players?platform=amp&__twitter_impression=true
  17. Sorry to hear this. RIP.
  18. Decent movie about the Polish fighters (which includes the Kościuszko Squadron) who helped turn the tide of the Battle of Britain. Their role doesn’t get the attention it deserves.
  19. I was looking at CD Japan and there was this notice: “Update April.23, 2020 : Additionally Suspended Countries / Regions [Important Note] Japan post will suspend deliveries by EMS and Airmail to all areas in the United States of America. If you wish to change your shipping method to DHL or FedEx, send us a request: info@cdjapan.co.jp” There is also this from the Japanese Post Office, https://www.post.japanpost.jp/int/information/2020/0423_01_01_en.pdf
  20. I’m still awaiting two CDs from Japan that were shipped through the post office in early April. DHL is the best way to go these days.
