  1. Jay Migliori was part of a Wazoo touring ensemble and gets a few solos (tenor and flute) on the live Wazoo. I don't know if he is represented in this set however.
  2. Listening to the Night Lights program Hope Lives: A Portrait of Elmo Hope from last year, and I just needed some more.
  3. Rolling through disc 2 of the Complete Bud Powell on Verve Records.
  4. I saw Mahavishnu on the Birds of Fire tour here in Memphis. The opening act was a new band making some headway with fans of Southern Rock, Marshall Tucker Band. John McLaughlin's request for silence was met with much the same reaction.
  5. I saw him perform after a nearer than usual death experience some 40 years ago-confronting death, man and God on stage at the fairgrounds here in Memphis. It was a much heavier experience than the average attendee likely anticipated! That's how I will remember him.
  6. Clearly it's like Lester Bowie said on another subject "That depends on what we know." I didn't know about a lot of music from the era and was just finding my way... but one thing I did manage to dig from 1973 was my first Sun Ra lp:
  7. It was a seeming sea change in the music that had been such fun just a year or two before that. I thought I was just "growing up."
  8. My attitude exactly.
  9. Having not listened to this material in quite some time, I really enjoyed discs 2-4.
  10. Catching this band on March 6, 1973 as a 16 year old was a game changer for me. By the time I saw the next iteration of the band, the next year, I too had seen Mahavishnu and was a bit more worldly. I never cared for Over-nite Sensation...I was expecting something more like what I had experienced when I was 16...
  11. I'm all in on this and just glad there are no gimcracks and geegaws included. I fervently hope that the next installment in this series features the Ponty/Duke/Underwood/Underwood/Fowler/Fowler etc band.
  12. I've played a few funerals-short performances of (usually) chosen music.... But one that might be of interest was the funeral of Mrs. Duckworth's grandfather-a man loved and respected in his Mississippi community. The officiant, it turns out, was an Elvis impersonator although he was not in Elvis drag for this event. His side gig became blindingly obvious when he sang Peace in the Valley.
  13. Listened to Midnight Walk by Elvin Jones and wanted more Thad.
  14. Bill Cole was death on it in his Miles biography, but I would be hard pressed to find my copy of that one.
  15. I've long been fascinated by Sidney De Paris's solo near the end of this record-particularly when he plays Bebop (the Dizzy tune).
  16. I use all physical media-like Chronological Classics, Mosaic, Timeless, Retrieval etc, but often those are not recognized by the source responsible for assigning the provenance of tunes.
  17. Joe Pass, although not featured exclusively, has some excellent spots on these Gerald Wilson records along with Teddy Edwards, Carmel Jones, and others.
  18. emoji indicating very strong approval here.
