Dallas, Austin, Houston, San Antonio, Etc. Jazz & Other Concerts
JSngry replied to kh1958's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
1978? 79? Late winter/early spring, iirc. Doing the math now, most likely late 78/early 79. That's about as specific as I can get it. -

Ok, done, or at least attempted. We'll see tomorrow.

Yeah, not too crazy about the liners either, but, you know, they're optional reading. And I've heard about the importance/influence of early Frankie Laine more than I've explored it. Is there a good compilation of his pre-Mercury recordings? If there is. I can't find it.

Season's Greetings!

Major bummer...apparently Tune In has force-fed an app update to my Roku, which means that some of the older, but still active stuff I had stored as favorites is gone...including WBGO2...now they only have WBGO1..this is not progress?

Wow, the newer Roku, the one with the interface we don't like as much, out in the den on the TV we don't watch as much, does indeed have the Trailer function on its Netflix app. So now I've seen the trifecta of offerings around this project. Time well spent, all of it. And actually, I like this one better than the longer one, it's more aboput the work behing "the work", and that kind of thing always fascinates me. Every time I see something like this, it's a reminder that a movie, the thing itself, never mind the art that does or doesn't go into it, is a hard thing to make. Factor in the epic recovery missions that went into making this one, including getting the sound and voices up to standard, and surely thiss project deserves some kind of broader recognition than just a Netflix documentary. I wondered how much attention they were going to give to the score, and sure enough, they have Legrand talking about hos it was his concept to have music playing non-stop throughout the film, just like you would have had at a party of this nature, and then somebody else saying that the continuos music was essential to the "glue" or something like that.. a-HA! Glad I wasn't just imagining that. But what they don't talk about is the addition of other non-Legrand music. There are two Jaki Byard solo tracks in this thing (confirmed on closing credits) and a Blue Cheer song used in the movie-with-in-the-movie, and,,,just read the closing credits. It's a damn good score, just what Legrand wrote for it, but...there's more! So...whose job would it have been to have gotten all that additional music added/sequenced/inserted? Legrand himself, wouldn't have gone that, would he? The next time I watch the film, what credit should I be looking for? Whoever it was did a helluva GREAT job. Too bad the days of the OST album are gone (they are, aren't they?). This would make for a really good one.

Those here who ordered through Tommy already have it. I did, and I do, and I am loving it. Very much "swing to bop"-ish, a pleasure in every way. A surging Lucky Thompson ALL over the place (what a shame that him & Byas never(?) took on each other during this time frame) , a palpable sense of NOW remains in the spirit of the playing, and I very much like how they're left the broadcasts intact. Those announcers are always a trip, and cutting them out is never a good thing, imo, you lose the natural flow of the performance as it was occurring. But...Frankie Laine "blues singer of the year"??????????? And are we really hearing the introduction of Frankie Laine to Atlas records, right there on mike? No matter, this is an excellent "historical release".

wow, the older Roku Netflix app doesn't have the trailer function. Let's see if the newer one does. I like to watch in bed, which is the room with the old one. But the interface on the newer one is kinda wonky, tries to do a lot of your thinking for you, and I don't like that. So it's out in the den. Let's see. Oddly enough, the Prime Video app has all that stuff, and more.

Ok, I'll dig around on Roku some more. I don't like watching anything of any duration on a computer, so if I can get it on my TV, that'll work. I didn't recall seeing the trailer options on by Roku Netfilx, but on the computer here, I do. The quest continues!

Hell yeah, Hawk.

OMG, this label has the strobe-disc around the outer edges, it's a Music Minus One project!
-
Wow, did Burt Reynolds pay in advance to get that face once it was no longer attached to its original owner?

If The American Bandstand Paradigm is applied, NWA has a good beat and I can dance to it. Jethro Tull does not. But careful with that, you be given to and taken from in all The Usual Dick Clark Ways. See the tree, how big it's grown?

I like how they made the opening riff into an almost cowboy song.

One of those things that just knowing it exists is good enough, don't ask me to like it too!

Seriously? That's kinda entry-level sarcasm, am I wrong to expect better from you? (and feel free to repay this compliment after reading this post) Don't ignore the oblivious - groups of people (both words plural) expressed displeasure with the song. Is that not their right? Stations heard them, and then made a business decision. Is that not their right? And now there's a debate, and some stations are reconsidering, while some are standing pat. How is any of this totalitarian? "Ban" is one of those emo panicwords that strikes fear in the hearts of the already fearful (there are many words, and many fearful people, you can scare damn near anybody about something, for me it's bone fractures and fried liver). People like Frank "It Can't Happen Here" Zappa (and sure it can) kinda burned it into everybody's heads and then Tipper Gore played right into his hand (but really, was the Parental Warning label such a bad idea, really? Obsolete as hell now, but you know, if I'm buying a record for a 9 year old or something, I think it's fair to let me know that I shouldn't just consume blindly) . What has happened and is happening here is no need to fear the brown-shirts. "Louie Louie" got banned, "Negro music" got banned" Beatles records got fucking burned, and wow, here they all still are, right where the indignant idiots left them, only more ensconced. This is America! "Radical feminist narrative that has been gaining mainstream acceptance recently: that modern America is a “rape culture” saturated with misogynistic violence." Think about that - first of all just what the fuck is a "radical feminist" anyway? That phrase means nothing to me. And what does it say that this so-called narrative of thier's is supposedly "gaining mainstream acceptance"? Is it possible that maybe, just maybe, there's a lot of people stepping back, taking a look around, and thinking, whoa, maybe something to that, let's recalculate and see where we go? People putting ideas out, people considering them and then acting on them, conversations had, decisions made, controversies ensue, evolution occurs (or doesn't), how the fuck any of that lead to totalitarianism? You know what totalitarianism looks like to me? None of that happening. Ever. Stay fluid. Yeah, well, you know, shit like that doesn't matter. It's only actual penatrative rape that can legitimately piss a good girl off, and even then, help is as nearby as the nearest community college GAS appreciation class. Or the nearest porn outlet. Either way, GET OVER IT AND GET BACK TO WORK. Fellas, am I: right, or am I right?
