I'm on the fence about this new Kenny Wheeler release. Like what I hear online, but the total playing time is under 30 minutes.

Charles Mingus Complete 1970s Atlantic box set

I'm likely to buy the set for precisely those reasons. But I'm a Philistine and cheapskate. -
Charles Mingus Complete 1970s Atlantic box set

Thanks. I have the Bremen and it's very good, better than I expected. Nitpicking, but you meant the new Rhino set (p.1 upthread), not Mosaic (emphasis added), right? [There have been so many tedious and pointless "what if" Mosaic threads of late that the word spooked me. 🤣] -

The Lost Recordings - 1963 Berlin / Dexter Gordon - Donald Byrd
T.D. replied to Dan Gould's topic in New Releases
I noticed that the original Jazz Messengers link, under Customers who bought this product also bought, links to a similar Blossom Dearie vinyl package at the same price. But the Dearie is Currently unavailable. 😢Must have sold out. 😄 -
The Lost Recordings - 1963 Berlin / Dexter Gordon - Donald Byrd

As long as the vinyl market stays (IMO) this crazy, people will keep pushing the price envelope. I've been wondering whether the vinyl craze will survive the expected recession, but time will tell. -
Thanks. I have that Evening With the Devil CD and a single-disc P-Vine CD of Volume 2. I did some research into the tracks before buying Vol. 2, and decided I didn't really need the remix. Good to confirm I have all the Vol. 1 tracks. This vinyl reissue got my attention because of the Tribe magazine replicas (which is a nice idea) and stratospheric price. Must have been aimed at the Japanese collectors market. I'm not sure who else would make such an investment.

I noticed this quite a while back, but can't help commenting. Get a load of this Japanese Tribe vinyl reissue: https://www.dustygroove.com/item/143180/Wendell-Harrison-Phil-Ranelin:Message-From-The-Tribe-Complete-4LP-10-7-magazine-box-set-Version-A LP reissue of all 3 versions of Message From the Tribe plus replicas of all issues of Tribe magazine(!), for a mere $500 MSRP. The reissue itself is available in 2 packages (differences unclear) at the same price. Version 3 is a remix of Version 2. Version 1 is somewhat different. I have a CD release of Version 2, and a Wendell Harrison CD release (Evening With the Devil) that includes the tunes from Version 1 (maybe different recording session, though) that aren't on 2 / 3. Too cheap to buy Version 3 for the remix, and I prefer the cover art of Version 2. This is a really cool release, but the price is kinda mind-blowing. Pretty big implied premium for the magazine replicas. I'd like to see the magazines, but couldn't pay the freight for this deal.

I'm not a vinyl guy (and happy for that given current prices / quality control complaints), but hasn't there been a serious ongoing shortage of vinyl pressing plants? That may be contributing to the price trend.
-
I agree with Lon and mjzee that it must be a repressing of 1,000 for a total of 3,500. I just can't imagine a total pressing of 8,500. Not to be an asshole curmudgeon, but is it unreasonable to expect a clearly worded release from Mosaic? Does anyone proofread anything these days?
-
I also got the e-mail. The wording confuses me. It seems to imply they're pressing an additional 3,500 copies, which is improbably large IMO. ISTR the initial pressing was 2,500 copies. Maybe they mean the add'l pressing is 1,000 copies for a total of 3,500?

+1. 100% These never-ending discussions seem paradoxical, to put it mildly. Mosaic looks like a small two-man enterprise that is (maybe not so) gradually winding down. Is there any indication that they care about these suggestions? IMO, one of the points of a project aimed at the niche audience of "jazz connoisseurs" is not needing to "sell jazz" or "broaden the audience". OTOH, as that niche audience ages and dies off, so will the project. However, given the age of the two principals that may not be a big concern.

I'm sure you can find significantly higher offerings at eBay, home of ridiculous listings. 🤣 [Years ago, when I occasionally sold on eBay, there were significant listing fees...that must have changed, judging by the multitude of absurd listings.] I almost never check eBay recording prices any more because the S/N ratio is so puny. Amazon is often even worse, but one seller happens to have this set for a bargain $109.99.

Good book and worth reading. Although after Wonder Boys and Adventures of Kavalier and Clay, the first two Chabon novels I read and thought outstanding, I never enjoyed any of his other works as much, and no longer consider his releases "must reads". That said, I read Telegraph Avenue as soon as it was published.

Overall, the sound quality of the Tristano set is not pleasing. One full disc (#1) and portions of a couple of others have really poor SQ, but the rest is OK. The SQ of disc 1 is so low that I can't really enjoy the music and seldom listen to it, but I find the other discs enjoyable. I did not expect great sound quality given long-dormant "Personal Recordings 1946 – 1970", and I'm sure Mosaic did as good a job as possible with the source material, but the low points were somewhat disappointing. I know a Tristano enthusiast on another forum (not Hoffman) who disliked the set due to sound quality. IMO the Tristano set was a "must issue" for Mosaic, that kind of thing was ( / is?) their raison d'être.

Excellent that you own the Arashi LPs. Agreed that the live performance would have been incredible. I went for the Takagi solo box. Couldn't sample any clips, but was persuaded by a few solo cafe performances I found on Youtube. Should arrive in a day or so.

You're welcome. The local paper initially printed a short and woefully inadequate obit. From what I've heard, they subsequently hired a freelancer to write a proper one. Thus the two-week delay.

Didn't Mosaic omit R&B-type material from the Black and White set "to keep it to a reasonable size"? That's the only explicit example that comes to mind. I wouldn't rule it out entirely (the Mosaic Contemporary series did a bunch of "smooth jazz" / "adult contemporary"), but strongly doubt Mosaic would go for it.

She did the arrangements, but did not play.
