  1. Thanks. That's a pretty generous print run, larger than I expected.
  2. I assume limited #. Question is exactly how limited, i.e. should I preorder?

Plenty of composer credits on allmusic. I got it from https://tinyurl.com/m26syte5 Have to scroll way down to 1979. Warning: allmusic is flaky on Chrome, may have to use other browsers.

None, but when sleuthing #3 I looked through her credits on allmusic. Was surprised by the diversity of recordings on which she sang backup, and I do own several of those. Biggest surprise was Daniel Lentz's Missa Umbrarum (old New Albion recording).

Given these hints, I also sleuthed out the answer, which I'd never have guessed. Likewise decline to reveal band/leader/album.
  6. I use Chrome and have clearly seen the posts all along, but skimmed over them due to lack of interest. Don't see anything wrong with posting details of upcoming releases, however.
  7. Some interesting things acquired from Michael (Scott): This contains 2 albums, one with Chris Schilder Quintet This obscure Swedish free jazz disc is rather good!
  8. RIP. Greatly enjoyed her playing. Starting in the early oughts I acquired a number of recordings, but in those days she was releasing so many that I couldn't keep up. Every recording I've heard, incl. the two above from Yoshi's, is recommendable. All of the titles on Maxjazz were good, and I'd also consider solo recordings, e.g. the Maybeck volume, All Alone on Maxjazz, etc.
  9. Thanks. I never researched the issue (don't trust "audiophile" sources, which is where I expected most coverage), but it wasn't hard to find a Library of Congress link: https://www.loc.gov/preservation/scientists/projects/cd-r_dvd-r_rw_longevity.html
  10. Have wondered myself. ISTR the failure rate of CD-R being the main drawback. I have owned one CD-R that became unreadable / unplayable after 5 or 6 years. Can't draw conclusions due to small sample size, I only regularly play a dozen or fewer CD-R.
  11. I have Clifford Jordan In the World as part of the Strata-East Mosaic, but I know that's not a reasonable suggestion if you're currently seeking a recording.
  12. Thanks, excellent info. Sorry I missed Karl Berger, recently finished his Music Mind Experience book.
  13. Excellent news.. Won't be there 3/13, but 4/13 is possible and I'm eagerly waiting for more Kingston venues (Senate Garage, Lace Mill, Beverly, ...) to resume offering music events. Bit of a trip for me, and I prefer weekends and/or early set times, but I'm probably older (64) than your main demographic...
  14. Thanks for these comments. I noticed the release on the website and would have ordered immediately, but the shipping cost to USA (inclusive of the massive book) took the cost over my limit. Will have to reconsider...My experience with JIB has been good, but I've always been leery of preorders, especially overseas ones, so never took that risk.
  15. My speculation is, FWIW (which is to say zero): Perhaps the composer is hoping for the piece to be recorded by Les Arts Florissants, for whom it was written. Understandable, since they're a deservedly renowned ensemble. But Wm. Christie and LAF seem to record for Harmonia Mundi, and a rap cantata doesn't strike me as a HM-like work. So it'd be a record company issue. Repeating FWIW.
  16. I couldn't find anything, but you've no doubt already done the same googling... I was interested to see that the work dates back to at least 2013, when (at least part of) it was performed in NYC: https://www.nytimes.com/2013/09/17/arts/music/new-vintage-baroque-gives-modern-twists-to-dianas-legend.html Could the composer (who spells his surname with 2 "t" s), against all odds, be related to the late jazz scribe Whitney Balliett?

I didn't know all this about Friesen. His most recent recording in my collection (w. Denny Zeitlin) dates from 1999 and sounds reasonable. I had the impression he'd gone a bit "ECM" / "spiritual" / whatever, but unaware of details. Also never knew that Dyan Cannon is his sister. Friesen's website merely mentions folk-flavored things and classical and Jewish veins.

I considered Friesen for #4, but if so it's not a recording I own (I played those to check) or have heard.

Funny coincidence, I recognized Mal and that album was the most likely source in my collection, so I played it a few days ago and concluded #4 was from elsewhere. Fine album, though. I have it as part of the big Waldron Black Saint/Soul Note box, one of my favorites from that set (which contains a few oddballs).
  20. I also had a career in financial industry (albeit fixed-income, not equity), and agree with your friend's comment and your interpretation. Probably true. I don't know enough about the games sector / subscription models to offer much comment there, but indirect 40% ownership by Tencent (per the Pitchfork link), for instance, is unlikely to be a good thing.

  23. I've seen Kenny Clarke mentioned on some (unreliable) links, and the drummer does resemble him somewhat. There's another Herman Leonard photo from NYC 1948 showing just Kenny Clarke, but I can't copy the image. https://www.morrisonhotelgallery.com/photographs/0hWMW4/Kenny-Clarke-NYC-New-York-1948 After looking at more photos, I believe it is Kenny Clarke.
