  1. maybe the right moment to remark that "Bismark" seems about as uncommon to me as "Bix"... "Bismarck", the historical figures second name, i would call already uncommon, even if 120 years ago a bunch of people decided to call their children that way, it has not aged very well... and "Bismark"... Jutta on the other hand is rather common
  2. what i mostly played in auditions is Lajos Dudas "Recital" I don't know whether this is available in the US, the publisher is Dohr www.dohr.de i think it is a nice alternative to the technically much harder "standard" solo pieces such as Stravinsky 3 pieces for clarinet solo or Sutermeister Cappriccio (which are of course highly recommended i don't know how good you play, but i think it takes a lot of time til you can play these with confidence in an audition unless you are quite advanced) the Dudas has a wide range of tempos and high and deep notes in it so you can show something. besides it takes about 7 minutes, but you can meaningfully leave out the fourth (and last) movement (5 minutes) or play only the third (3 minutes)... which makes it adaptable to different audition formats. it has a nice flow to it and might still appeal to people who are a somewhat (not too much) afraid of things avantgarde... it reminds many listeners of jazz but i don't really know why (not too surprising given the composer though) hope this helps a little!
  3. amazing, those prices for "Sealed IMPORT!!"s
  4. I would like to do that, but I bought so many last year during the Zweitausendeins sales .... at least some obscures from the wish list were among them, but most were not, but at 2 or 3 € a piece one would have a hard time to resist. Same here... I still miss most of, say Teddy Edward's, Curtis Fuller's, Benny Golson's, Johnny Griffin's discs... and these lesser known names (as opposed to Duke, Basie, Peterson, Miles, Trane, Bill Evans, Monk) seem to be neglected so far in the new releases distributed by Universal same here, the list actually got even longer, it feels, 200 CDs more or less don't really make a difference Yusef Lateef, Howard McGhee, Steve Lacy, just to write what comes to mind first...
  5. Yes, I've seen Walkin' (or 'Gravy') attributed to both. Seems Carpenter's theft of Mundy's compositions isn't limited to 'Walkin''. This is from James Gavin's biography of Chet Baker, Deep In a Dream: In the manner of the quickie bop-record dates of the fifties, when albums were done in a day with hardly any rehearsal. Baker and his group showed up at each session and basically winged it. Jimmy Mundy sat in the control room, anonymously churning out songs for which Carpenter took credit. "He was writing the next tune while we were recording the tune before," said [Kirk] Lightsey. Carpenter had brought along a bundle of Tadd Dameron's music, plus a few Sonny Stitt pieces on which he claimed coauthorship. Seems like Carpenter ripped off everyone who came in contact with him. cool, thank you! always thought, maybe the deal with Dameron was that he brought Baker in contact with Carpenter and in return got his music recorded under his own name... (and it seems that Carpenter was more cautious than in his earlier days as he let (iirc) one tune appear as written by Mundy and had singer Gladys Bruce or Stitt appear as the second author on "his" compositions so that no one could claim that Carpenter as a non-musician was unable to compose these tunes...)
  6. who actually wrote "Walkin" That was Gene Ammons. at aaj iirc they have a thread where it says that you are not supposed to discuss this question there anymore (Jimmy Mundy wrote Walkin) still wondering who wrote all those Carpenter/Bruce compositions on the Chet Baker / George Coleman / Richard Carpenter sessions...
  7. already got it on saturday and love it - thought about posting it under "exceeded expectations" but after all it's not much different from what i thought, i just like it much better than i expected
  8. thank you!!!

  10. somehow, i tremedously enjoy the idea of "Manfred" playing a record such as Jan Garbarek's Rites to Wynton Marsalis and saying "this is roughly what i had in mind" - don't know if Marsalis would do a second album
  11. not sure whether this is what sometimer happened to me... if it is: click on options (in the upper right corner of the first post in any thread) then a listbox opens and the last three entries are the "display modes" what you have right now sounds like "Linear+" to me - what you want is "Standard" hope this helps edit to add: i sometimes experience this when entering threads from google :-) (as if google has saved links with these settings - don't know about these things)
  12. it's one of the best written jazz books i ever read (the only interesing book in the local library)
  13. don't know it long enough to really say something but at the moment i really really like that 1968 Reunion Big Band MPS album not to forget the subject of the thread: Dizzy Gillespie - Digital in Montreux
  14. mmmmaybe i should prepare a list of artists who "covered" cole porter
  15. don't know if that makes you feel better, but it's not entirely a French phenomenon...
  16. same here
  17. Argh, don't even get me started... All those nice Art Pepper Contemporary albums... Those CDs by people I didn't even know about back then... It really was a great time. I got pretty much everything on Fantasy from the likes of Cannonball, Lockjaw, Bill Evans, Bobby Timmons, Blue Mitchell, Booker Ervin, Shelly Manne (four of the five Blackhawk discs!), McCoy Tyner (his Milestone albums were a revelation to me!), Sonny Rollins (all except three of his Milestone CDs!), Eric Alexander... all for €2.99 each - or even less in some cases! It was insane! in the beginning i thought i was only interested in Jon Eardley, Zoot Sims, George Wallington and the like... only 2 Shelly Manne, way to few Art Pepper, didn't get any Charles Earland or Rusty Bryant... didn't get any McCoy Tyner, not all the Johnny Griffin or Jimmy Heath I could have gotten, way too few Cannonball, no Kenny Drew, only about half of the Coltrane Prestige stuff i could have gotten... just too much for buying a box set at the moment, didn't get the Mingus Debut Box, or the Rollins Freelance Box... no Jackie McLean, not all Sonny Criss... list is getting longer every day - should be much more grateful for the many great things i found out about in the past 9 months or so...
  18. what a great record store that must be...
  19. Looks like LP only. I've been resisting getting dragged back into the vinyl world, but it is suggestions like this that weaken my resolve... there was a recent CD reissue probably following the Conn... amazon.de has it mombasa - african rhythm and blues at amazon.de
  20. me, too, i think even more than 150; but the worst thing is that every day i spent at least ten minutes thinking about the CDs i didn't get...

    Funny Rat

using my superior searching abilities i came up with this bit which i would not consider particularly offensive:
  22. did that, too... especially after my pretty decent 900$ tenor had fallen to the floor and repairing it would have cost 700$ so i had to play on other people's instruments and played a lot... when i was 20 and had the money for the Selmer together it was pretty clear that i wouldn't get to playing anymore workwise... so i spent 400 $ on a really old saxophone (B&S is the brand, its from the GDR and i think vintage is not exactly the right word it looks great though) think i have played a total of 5 hours on it in the last 4 years (not too sad about it as i never became especially good)
  23. Niko

    verve downsized

well, actually i had intended to buy albums until 2050 or 2070... same here... but even if CDs disappear, we can switch to vinyl in 2040 or so!
