  2. if you want to continue with DiRubbo, this quartet session with vibraphonist Monte Croft is a favorite... http://www.smallsjazzclub.com/index.cfm?eventId=2616

    Walt Dickerson

i'm only the messenger! that blog is a treasure trove of the highest order, previously unseen (?) Tapscott and Mingus, the elusive Vonski/Patrick/Hill recordings, Grant Green/Sam Lazar recordings beyond Space Flight... sounds to good to be true imho

    Walt Dickerson

Armin Büttner posted parts of a 1954 live recording of Walt Dickerson with Lou Blackburn in Germany on his blog... http://crownpropeller.wordpress.com (which is worth checking out for various other reasons as well)

    Tom Archia

stupid question on the Archia article, in the text on this picture: the article claims that Archia second saxophone player from left is holding an alto instead of his usual tenor; i'd have seen it as a tenor, anyone agree/disagree?
  6. slightly off-topic, but apparently shipping to germany from amazon uk marketplace is by now even slightly cheaper (1.82 Pound) than shipping to germany from amazon.de market place...
  7. but why th do they reissue them after those cheap Miles, Evans and Monk boxes from Italy? and why no Montgomery?
  8. Are these (that) boxes far superior to the recent Monk, Evans and Miles boxes from Italian Universal? e.g. http://www.amazon.it/Riverside-Milestone-Albums-Evans-Bill/dp/B004I289FE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1308780041&sr=8-1
  9. no idea how large your collection is/was but i'd definitely be intereted in seeing a list of what you're keeping !
  10. on the plus side, she did look a bit healthier than on some photos that went around in recent years---
---- doesn't look that deep? MSMF born P ... died A ... better known as Noite Illustrada was a Brasilion singer, composer and violin player. He received his nickname from ZT who directed the revue Noite Illustrada in Alem Paraiba (province of Minas Gerais) where a young Mario started his career as a violin player.... and then there are two sentences about how he got his first record deal, and after the discography two sentences about he died...
  12. i really like Szabo's working band heard on the two Sorcerer albums (and some later ones as well) so though I haven't heard More Sorcery I'd definitely recommend that twofer
  13. thank you, i love this webpage (more pictures if you click on Resimlerim in the lower left corner on his homepage and choose one of the two categories)

    Sam Jones

That would take up too much space here. here's another one hoping for an answer!
  15. true, but part of not making a big deal of some people being GLBT is not being afraid of throwing in a name without being certain... Unfortunately, it is a big deal in some areas of our society. And what's not a big deal to you may be a very big deal to someone whose name is mentioned without any substantiation. yes, but from that angle, consent seems more important than substantiation to me... and for "historical" people like Navarro I don't see a problem
  16. true, but part of not making a big deal of some people being GLBT is not being afraid of throwing in a name without being certain...
  17. i assume "the last book" refers to Gavin and not to the excellenz deValk biography... the guy loses quite some sympathies for saying "the last book" to often (as if the goal was to be better than the previous biography published (as opposed to any biography publishd), anyway, of course i am interested...
  18. + Curtis Fuller - Soul Trombone / Cabin In The Sky currently, the preorder price is 7,99 Euro on amazon.de , they say it comes out on 24 June over here
  19. Paul Brewer with Organissimo:
  20. don't think Gilroy is a pseudonym, it was easy to be on the SF jazz scene without becoming a big name; there's a Claude Gilroy (died Pacific Grove, Monterey, CA) in the Social Security Death index, 1928-2003, which seems plausible; and here's a guy from the area who says he played drums with him: http://www.mbay.net/~ndys/article.html see also here: http://nl.newsbank.com/nl-search/we/Archives?p_product=MC&s_site=montereyherald&p_multi=MC&p_theme=realcities&p_action=search&p_maxdocs=200&p_topdoc=1&p_text_direct-0=0FD2210172126C96&p_field_direct-0=document_id&p_perpage=10&p_sort=YMD_date:D&s_trackval=GooglePM seems to be the guy...
  21. and wasn't "Hen Gates" also a name of pianist James Foreman (late forties Dizzy sideman, stepfather of Mtume...) does it stand for anything in english/is there a joke I don't get?
  22. not quite a pseudonym but i like this cover a lot
  23. well, it was a crappy day in a crappy week, but i did cry when i read you post above... the board is not about talking jazz these days anymore, it's about being one of those left (and, sad as this is, i'm sure you're one of those) - so hang in there, come back, you know you have friends here (whatever that means but you do) and I am wishing you the best of luck (still don't own a single Mosaic set after all those years and it's not because i don't want to, also had to cut back on all sorts of things the last few months, no idea where I'll be a few months from now but most of the time a vague optimism which I'd immediately share if I could)
  24. not familiar with anything, but did you see that you can play the complete albums in so-so sound quality on the label's website...
  25. many here used it for the first batch of Black Saint/Soul Note Boxes which they had at a great price... always worked fine for me... btw they also have great prices on those new (not yet available) Impulse Twofers http://www.grooves-inc.co.uk/sanders-pharoah-village-the-pha-impulse-cd-album-pZZa1-1862622862.html?osCsid=515ced3105f928b35c27679ac4b5a4dc
