  1. Thanks for these reports. They are inspiring me to make sincere efforts to attend the shows in New Haven and Hartford on Friday and Saturday.
  2. received my package over the weekend
  3. Hey - with any luck I will see both of you in Hartford! It is ten minutes from my home. I also plan to catch him in New Haven on the 19th.
  4. It is actually being programmed by Jason Moran and I do not think Threadgill is scheduled to perform.
  5. The Harrell is a good one. I heard the band perform much of the music live at the Vanguard months ago.
  6. A few of those have actually been available for quite a while. I have the Lacy, Berkman and Green discs.
  7. Certainly looking forward to it, as well as the new disc.
  8. I definitely want the Steve Lacy set. The only drag is that 2 of the 5 albums included in the Lyons box were also included in the Andrew Cyrille Box which I already own. I also own all five of the discs included in the Lyons box as individual CDs. In a perfect world I would be getting this one, but I am not sure the upgrade on presumably only three of the five discs makes sense for me.
  9. Where is the link posted?
  10. I would like a download.

  13. For anyone who may be traveling through CT this fall ...
  14. I would love to hear Renee Rosnes play, but she's probably never been to these shores :-( Very nice performance. In addition to Steve Nelson on vibes, the ensemble also featured John Patitucci on bass and drummer Carl Allen. Good mix of original compositions with titles by Duke Pearson, Ellington, Monk and a standard. Can't remember whether I ever heard Rosnes live before, but she was impressive. Nelson is a wizard! The only bad thing I have to say about the evening is that it was an outdoor performance and I once again happened to be in the vicinity of "those people" who wanted to be the only ones talking loudly throughout the entire performance.
  15. Renee Rosnes Quartet with Steve Nelson.
  16. The New Haven show was good, but not great. I thought the drummer was just okay, and Tamura spent more time playing his little toys and playing other than straight trumpet, which I would have preferred. Some friends I attended with enjoyed it much more than me. I saw the same trio the next night at Vision Festival and was a bit underwhelmed.
  17. For clarification, I do not use my data plan when I download a recording to my phone. Instead I do it from my wifi network at home. When home I will stream from my desktop computer, but that obviously does not impact my data plan either.
  18. Thanks. I picked up this along with the recent solo and trio recordings at her show in New Haven a couple of weeks ago. None of them have made it into the CD player yet, but perhaps this will inspire me to give them a listen.
  19. Although I have had paid for a subscription to Rhapsody for several years, I rarely use it. I know I am wasteing money, but I like the idea of it generally - especially as a tool to audition recordings before purchase, or if I was not such an obsessed collector to cut down on my actual purchases - if I limited my purchases to recordings that are not available on Rhapsody. Anyway, when reading about the data issues, one of the things I think is good about my plan on Rhapsody is that I can download recordings to my phone that can be played without streaming. That way, if I use Rhapsody on my phone where no wifi is available (such as at my job where streaming sites are blocked), I can still listen to the recordings. I have quite a few recordings downloaded to my phone. Of course, I still have the problem that I do not utilize Rhapsody as much as I should and the recordings downloaded to my phone have a similar fate to the piles of physical CDs piling up around my home.
  20. I was at the live performances at Firehouse 12 that part of the release will be taken from. I see Stephen with some regularity in the area. It is taking a while, but he is still working to get the stuff released.
  21. mrjazzman's follow up seems to confirm some of the above posts that Akinmusire makes a much better impression live than he has on his ambitious, if not fully realized recordings.
  22. I am a fan of Akinmusire - largely after hearing him live at Smalls with Mark Turner's quartet. Then he played with a lot of imagination and fire. I have generally "appreciated" his three recordings as a leader. I have also been able to hear a number of radio broadcasts of live performances. I think what he is trying to do comes across better in a live setting than on some of the productions of the recordings. Live, it is generally a quintet blowing. Yes, the compositions at times seem to be clever, just for the sake of cleverness, but IMO they work live when the energy of the setting inspires the musicians.

  24. I would be interested to hear how this show was! I love the playing of Mario Pavone, and have the Streets Songs album high on my wish list. Nice set last night. This was the first of five dates this ensemble will be playing over the next month. I might try to catch one or more of the upcoming shows. The texture created by the brass ensemble and the two basses was very warm and slightly dark. The accordion blended well into the overall sound of the ensemble. Ballou and McEachern have several impressive solos. At times it was a little difficult to hear Testa's bass, but there were a couple of spots when the two bassists were featured that were very interesting. Different kind of venue. It is an old church that has been converted into a setting reminiscent of an Eighteenth Century European drawing room. I was seated on a sofa directly in front of the musicians and there were a variety of parlor chairs and couches in various spots in the room. All things considered sound was solid.
