I have not heard this one yet, but it is on my want list. Interestingly, all of the reviews that I have read about this one are very positive. Noone said "essential", but the overall impression made me think this is a must have for a William Parker fan like myself. Last night I ordered the new quartet disc (Rob Brown, Lewis Barnes and Hamid Drake) from the AUM Fidelity website. Really looking forward to hearing that one.

No I did not know about it, but if anyone interesting comes to play let me know and I will take the 40 minute drive south.

I have not actually heard him live. A friend sent me a disc of a performance he did at the Knitting Factory in NYC. At the time I had no idea who he was and this friend wanted to hip me to him in return for all the music I have shared with her over the past few years. To be honest I am not sure what the source is. Its just him and a rather poor sounding piano. Kanye West is also on a couple of the tracks. I heard that before I heard any of the stuff they are playing on the radio and based on that alone I was impressed.

I have heard parts of the recording and what I have heard I have enjoyed a lot. I also have heard something from a live performance by Legend, which impressed me.

I don't have that particular recording, but I do have about 36 minutes from a radio broadcast of a performance by the group during the same tour in Warsaw. IMO, almost anything by a group with this personnel is at least worth hearing.

LF - Joe Lovano "Tenor Time" (Something Else)
relyles replied to Kevin Bresnahan's topic in Offering and Looking For...
I don't know anything about the vendor, but the obi in the image indicates it's Taiwansese (rather than Japanese). Maybe it was also released in Taiwan. I believe it was. The home page for the site states that it specializes in recordings released in Taiwan. -

Me too. Rooster, I have heard the recording before. It is basically an all standards recording. My memory is that it is a solid recording, if not essential. -

For what it is worth I just placed an order for the disc using Paypal and it the seller is a non-US verified business member with a significant amount of activity. The total, including shipping (unregistered) was $22.70. -

I found this listing via a google search tenor time. I have no experience ordering from them in the past. -
FYI, someone recorded the show last week at the Bimhuis and it is now available to download from easytree.
-
For what it is worth, after my posts I received a message from the person that uploaded the recording to easytree, Carville, that he was not aware of the dubious source of the recording and that he voluntarily requested the moderators to remove the torrent.

Nothing. Poor description on my part.

Well you have the Freedom Suite played by Branford Marsalis and part of it by Ken Vandermark additionally to Ware. I did say rarely. I have heard both of the other interepretations as well - I think Ware's version is a little more of an extended version. For those people that generally find Ware too intense (and I can agree with that assessment much of the time) I think his interpretation of the suite has a balance of the structured and his usual intensity to make it more approachable than some of his other music.
-
I have it and enjoyed it - particularly Mateen's playing throughout. Not as structured as Gonzalez' NY Midnight Suite, which was released around the same time, but strong playing by everyone.

Jansa recorded a couple of albums on Timeless with Woody Shaw. One of which, Dr. Chi I have and can easily recommend. I also have heard one or two radio broadcasts of live performances by the same group that are pretty good.
-
Sorry, but I really do not understand what you are asking? Can you expand your question a little?
-
That is probably the most accessible Ware quartet recording available and one that I enjoyed very much. However, I vaguely hearing some of those more familiar with Ware's music saying that the recording is not entirely representative of Ware's music. Other than that, I would say go for it. We rarely hear an interpretation of the Rollins suite and I personally found this recording very good. And William Parker's bass vamps throughout really get you in the gut.

I have been listening to this set this week. I have listened to the first two discs and enjoyed them very much. I started the third disc, which is a live version of Sonny Rollins' "Freedom Suite", this morning. I really like the studio recording by the group of the suite and the first 20 minutes of the live version which I listened to while driving to work are at least equally as good. Although I have and have heard quite a few Ware recordings I am not sure that I am the best person to recommend something to a newbie. Ware's quartet has gotten a lot of respect from the avant garde community, but I have yet to feel fully engaged with this music. With that said, based on what I have heard so far, I think the 3 disc set which you have already ordered is a very good introduction.

Didn't you also record with Byron? As best I can remember, I enjoyed that recording a lot.

5th Annual Jazz Composers Collective Festival

I am going to make an effort to get down one of the nights to see Ron Horton (probably Tuesday or Thursday), who I have been meaning to catch up with for a while because of some of the help he has given with the Andrew Hill discography. -
I have that one. For anyone wondering, its an enjoyable recording.

Has anyone else heard this one yet? It was recently released on hatOLOGY and in addition to Liebman and Eskelin also features bassist Tony Marino and drummer Jim Black. I have listened to it about three or four times now and I have yet to connect with the music. I don't know why. Maybe my expectations were too high. I have not listened to much Liebman, but I do consider myself somewhat of a fan of Eskelin's playing. There are a couple of tracks where they play Tad Dameron, Lee Konitz and Cole Porter tunes. Those are my favorite tracks. The originals have left me a little cold so far, but I want to keep listening. I was surprised at how similar Liebman and Eskelin sound - at least on this recording. Anyone else give this a try? I think I need to find a chance when I can focus on this one and give it all my attention.
-
I think this may be the first recording featuring Garzone that I really noticed him on. I was very impressed and motivated to investigate him more. The Fringe Live In Israel disc is also very good.

Looks like just about everything that seller is currently listing are live bootlegs that I have seen circulating for free. It is strange that he/she would be so blatant about it, but there are many peeople out there that do not know these things should not be purchased and that they can be obtained for no more thand the price of a blank CDR and some postage. There was a time when I was one of those people.

LF: Andrew Hill: From California With Love
relyles replied to fent99's topic in Offering and Looking For...
There are a few sellers at GEMM that are listed as having the LP, including this one that seems to have one in stock for $2.50. From California with Love.
