  1. youre thinking of FANCY FREE-, w. the rhodes, free form is an earlier lp. honestly i -had-, a ny usa copy, i traded it, + 20 dollars for the Buddy Collette on Dooto. it had to be done
  2. this counts cause its a jazz activity---i just saw a jazz-film. the movie version of THE CONNECTION. jackie and freddie redd are in the entire film, and w. lots of blowin. one really cool shot of jacking taking a solo, and the camera goes right up to the horn. i wonder how the film is different from the stage play. THE CONNECTION was a very clastrophopic movie, the film shot in one room with not a lot of different camera shots. the movie was shot like a 'movie within a movie' type-senario. i guess it had exteremly ltd release in NY and it got banned, but it was at ucla film archiv and theyve just released a copy or something. Definetly rec. if youre a fan of jackie mclean or freddie redd, theyre in the entire film with acting and playing, although i had no idea who the bass and drummer were, never heard those names (?)
  3. seeing Candido this week was a dream come true. unfortunately i know very little about him outside of his recordings, has anyone here on the board ever seen him live in concert, id espicaly be interested to hear from people who saw him in the 60s, 70s, or 80s. probably aronud the nyc area? what were his concerts like back then?
  4. definetly go see Yusef lateef! hows archie shepp looking these days?god, lateef is 92, a tiny but older than Candido. i wish he would play the west coast US, i have never seen him
  5. ill hear it but how could it possibly top the Nightfly
  6. god bless you brownie, thanks for posting those amazing pics. interesting observation someone had above: blakey looks very 'of the time', but hank looks very 50s. thats hank for ya. regarding reach out as someone was postin abt above, i had a friend who knows benson ask him a few weeks ago, specifically what hank was up to with reach out, 2 pop songs on it, reach out/goin out of my head.....was hank specifically trying to make a pop-jazz style album with that? george said yea.....he also got a big smile she said, and said 'i havent thought about that in years!"
  7. CANDIDO ALL STARS incl. pete escovedo. it was incredible
  8. how long has the bulk of those mcmaster cds been around. i know blue note was on cd near the beginning, with lee morgan and john coltrane emi black triangle CP32 discs. but when did the 1st us reissues come? who manufactured them?
  9. lee morgan / the rumproller / ny usa stereo
  10. why on terrapin station studio cd trk 1 estimated prophet,............um why all of a sudden, instead of a jerry solo, theres a tom scott lyricon solo. ive always found that a very odd choice.
  11. this cd contains the most HQ philly joe drum solo ive ever heard. trk 1 'awful mean'. even though the whole things drenched in reverb--- its bar none the most HQ sound philly drum solo, the snare sounds completly live. i would really be interested to know if any of you have this cd.
  12. . ok this is in the uk; so its an FM station right. bbc 1, 2 etc were fm, right??? do you guys know the term "PRE-FM". this is ideal. for years i had a crappy recorded off the dial copy of robert palmer's 1986 riptide tour concert. now, i have the westwood one 3 lp set, before it was broadcasted, so to say. PRE FM. Bill F: that is incredible you were there- good job!! did you have personal contact with lee morgan, or any of the mssgrs?
  13. you guys have you ever seen this particular release or others like it, way back when? its very strange. disc made in japan by toshiba cd states- licenced from vee jay international. the case of cd has a weird sticker, COMPACT DISC MIDLINE SERIES--CHAMELON DISCOVERY--PRICED TO ENTICE--$10.98 LIST. it doesnt seem like a 2nd market sticker but something that would of been put on originally has anyone ever heard of this label, or know what else they released. the mastering, to my ears, is okay-----but as for the source tape, thats another story. i really wonder how this company was able to get this material put out
  14. this is an important series for cd format. 1st off none of these titles were issued on cd during the early days of cd, or really any era- most of these were never on cd. 2nd-ly the fusion-y nature of these make these titles a perfect fit for the cd-fromat. HOWEVER.....what sources will be used, original mastertapes perhaps? this is the big sticker point with me. if these were really legit transfers, man id be all over it. but will i pay big bucks for a digital copy of a freakin DAT or a copy of the master? no way. i have gene harris- in a special way, a tocj cd from some years ago....sound=AMAZING. ive passed on sealed copies of the vinyl im so happy with it on CD. i hope this current series sounds similar. does amazon carry these titles ever, or do you have to use cdjapan?
  15. Chuck thats interesting thats the 1st you had, there were earlier Verve issues, that look like THIS-- some of the early verve cds are essential, like the solo Bill Evans stuff. this is music you need to hear without distortion or other limitations of vinyl. god bless the cd! happy cd birthday, everybody!
  16. re- muddy sounding larry young liberty/heaven on earth no, not just your copy. frankly this is how a lot of the period blue notes sound. espically noticible on our modern eqipment, compared to what people were playing these on in 1967. almost every time, im okay with it. the sound of the bass espically still will sound much more lifelike that on a sterile mcmaster cd. scored this recently, great lp. cant say i knew it existed. i think vik was still cutting 78s at this time. (they went really, really late). would love it if the album had a single!
  17. oh yea, ive seen it an argos...hey really good point re- maybe people not wanting to by 'old' music. that makes a lot of sense. i think a few might have turnarounds less than a year. i have a copy of love bug with a date hand written on it, and it is like 6th months from the rec. date.,** but yea... ** have to double check exactly but i know it was less than 1 yr
  18. - checkout out BLOWIN IN, right now-- i can definetly hear how an original 50s cut would sound WAY better. i can totally tell. on some of those 60s stereo issues non rvg cut, they sound -AMAZING-. not this 70s u/a mono. but im stil happy i upgraded from my 90s edition ---ever wonder why bluenote lps never had the recording dates on the back. was that not considered important back then.
  19. now i know its a good find, but does this qualify as BLUE NOTE BONANZA? ----(try to guess which ones the original)
  20. im sure theres many, but for me #1 is wild honey
  21. @ epistrophy: totally expected the book to be complied from existing sources
  22. the bass sound on 'Smoke Stack' is incredible. and overall, the SQ is actually -much- better than i expected for a $100 copy of this. the horn solos, bass, and cymbals, are comming through crystal clear even on this VG- copy. lots of presence, the cds sound incredibly thin by comparison. i am happy i got this lp in particular, it is not a normal record. its definetly one of the most unique blue note sessions ever done. its more influenced by like the way Prestige, were doing jazz records, and with that 4-horn allstar lineup.........puts it in a catagory of its own, its defintely the Blue Note Tenor Conclave, this record. one of a kind on the entire label!
