  1. what was pc complaining about specifcally, do you recall? DID U MEET HANK? what was it like to see hank in concert
  2. 1st off his albums are for some reason really rare. never seen any of his lps in person. saw him in concert about 13 yrs ago for a week, was fantastic- althoygh ive never heard of him gigging since..........
  3. thanks for the needledrop, out of the whole session, whats the best hank selection? prior to this the only song ive heard i believe is goodnight irene. knowing its hank in advance, i can feel out its really hank on both these sides, moreso on the ballad, as you all say. the whistling/sax combo is definetly a unique item in hanks recorded catalog!
  4. in '00 he was supposed to play in LA, i flew down, but the gig was cancelled. i -think- it was supposed to be donald byrd/curtis fuller band, IIRC
  5. did you know he played a gig in portland not 2, 3 wks ago? vid on the tube. hey if anyone hears about a gig or something be sure to mention it in this thread! so happy about the most current news. Its good to see hes still playin, and of course todays great news, but i hope hes ok.
  6. you know, i cant believe hes only 80. 80 doesnt seem that old to me anymore. because, one min. yr in yr 70s still completely rockin' it, then things get really bad. and as short as life is, donald byrd accomplished more than most people. he has one of the best discographies in jazz, his music covers so much ground. and he even went to law school and became a lawyer. that is interesting someone mentioned they saw him in 07. i was under the impression he was somewhat retired or more reclusive these days, is that not so. on the orig. link i posted, theres what appears to be a more recent pic of him, he looks great! Donald Byrd's blue note carreer survived longer than Hank's and Lee Morgan and actually all his bn partners save horace silver and gene harris. am i missing anybody? bobby hutcherson..... ok theres a few. DB did, what Hank Mobley never was able do.
  7. http://hipstersanctuary.wordpress.com/2013/02/06/soul-jazz-musician-composer-donald-byrd-succumbs-at-80/ this is what i was linked to last night at about 1145pm. is there any updated info yet. I hope to god we are all wrong, and DB is ok.
  8. ive never seen a vangelder cut as late as '88. so is the studio not being used much these last few decades? do you think after rudy passes it will become like a major studio again.
  9. UPDATE i am now the owner of this lp. once again, to clarify: what i have is like what you see in pic in the OP, with the record sliding out on the right, this isnt the back slick on the back, then the lp would slide out the left. i take it is some kind of promo or advance copy, but i no nothing of another one in existence....
  10. the music of the gods. my favorite is "Procession" of which i have a japan-for-japan 1st pressing CD, which sounds beyond incredible. my favorite 70s album is prob. mysterious traveller. so lucky to have seen joe z. 3 times in 1999.
  11. um theres defiently white label promo savoy 45s, gospel included, and theres wlp savoy 78s too. what i came across was not wlp, regular red label, no promo stamps, etc. just that, the cover, is that back slick, on the front, and thats it. plain white back, lp slides in on the correct right hand side. the cover is very professional, definetly not some chop-job, or nothin....the item is not available for me to purchase unfortunately i dont think, but i did see it in person- i guess what i meant in my threadtitle was has anyone seen a promo copy that meets this description, before....
  12. have you ever seen this here, as the FRONT cover to the album, with a plain white back. inside: red label rvg stamped orig issue savoy lp.....
  13. Junior jazz at the auditorium- w. lucky thompson and howard mcghee. 2 12'' 78 rpm discs in cover, 'black & white' records. i believe i have this material on a 10'' 'tops records' issue
  14. did not know this existed, must get this
  15. wait, its on BN? is this waynes 1st BN related release since the 70s.
  16. daaaaaaam. did u find that on the hunt, or on the ebay. is it a different mix than the production version?
  17. side B Gene Ammons/King Kolax/George Freeman et al sextet/ chicago TV b'cast 1970
  18. ive always assumed it was a different herbie nichols
  19. i heard about this happening a while ago, cant recall source. thats cool theyre using the name by asso. the label w/ a catalogue of decent artists in improvised music, as listed, frissel, bob james, medeski, they so totally could of revived the name for not as good modern r&b boy bands, or whatever. so its a plus the roster is artists we know. the article didnt even mention the 60s revival, did it. so much great soul music and r&b on 60s OKeh
  20. im just happy they are well enough to take something like this on. espically wayne, who looks like hes aged a lot recently
  21. how did the concept of intense jazz essays/"liner notes" devlop. was it to make jazz appear more intellectual. blue note, huge culprit. blue note didnt start this, right? i never learned much from these essays. a little of the bio stuff is always great to have, but a lot is very opinionated or just used as space to describe "how the music works". i used to have in mind the worst offenders on blue note, i cannot recall which ones now.... btw big beat steve that must be a UK copy, nice gloss on that PJ
  22. i will be in shock about this, forever. RIP
  23. lee couldnt envision in '72 that his conception of jazz as more elite skin to symphonies, etc, would backfire to lincoln center. thats not what lee meant. what lee was dreaming of never really happened, it mutated into lincoln center.
